ACMA Consults on Renewing Aircraft and Aeronautical Mobile Radio Class Licence

Date : 18 / 06 / 2026
Author : ACMA

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is seeking feedback on a proposal to remake the Radiocommunications
(Aircraft and Aeronautical Mobile Stations) Class Licence 2016 before it reaches its legislative sunset date.

The class licence authorises the use of radiocommunications equipment installed in, or carried on board, aircraft and forms an
important part of Australia's aviation communications framework. The ACMA's preliminary view is that the current arrangements
continue to operate effectively and remain a necessary component of the radiocommunications regulatory system.

The class licence covers a wide range of aircraft, including general aviation, recreational aircraft, gliders, balloons,
paragliders and other aviation users operating on approved aeronautical frequencies.
Interested stakeholders are encouraged to review the consultation paper and draft licence and provide feedback to the ACMA
before the consultation closes.
Further information, consultation documents and submission details are available from the ACMA consultation page and the aircraft
and aeronautical mobile stations class licence information page.

The consultation closes on the 21st July 2026 and proposes remaking the existing class licence with only minor administrative
and drafting changes, maintaining the existing operating arrangements while improving clarity and ensuring the instrument
remains current.
