NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
JOTA is happening in the NW

JOTA is going ahead at Paton Park, behind Ulverstone on Saturday 19th October from 0900hrs till 1800hrs.

The antennas have been tested, and the club has a 2m & 70cm radio and power supply. We could supply HF radios for amateurs to use, if they donâ€Öt want to bring their equipment.

We will be supporting scouts again, with the Morse code send/receive terminals and UHF CB Handhelds for the map reading and radio exerciseâ€Ös.

Currently we only have two amateurs confirmed to assist. We need a minimum of 4 operators for 2 metres, 70cm and the two HF stations. If we have 6 or more amateurs , mean people can have a break. The two radio rooms are located in a brick building below the radio tower, and full facilities, kitchen and toilets on site.

If you can assist please contact Eric VK7EV at ericvdneut1(at)bigpond.com

Regards

Eric, VK7EV

North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club Meeting

NWTARC October meeting

NWTARC held its bi-monthly Club meeting on the 5th October 2024, at the Ulverstone Scout Hall.

The Club welcomed visitors Nick VK6NDX, Steve VK7SL and Martin VK7AAH

Two amateurs requested, and filled out Membership forms to join the Club.

6 membership application were voted on, and Nick VK6NDX, Mike VK7TM, Rob VK7ARG, Brenton VK7HP, MartĂn VK7AAH and Steve VK7SL were accepted as Club members.

We received correspondence from REAST, inquiring if the club was interested in obtaining a special event callsign, for when the new Spirit of Tasmaniaâ€Ös arrive, as was done in 1994, when the first Spirit of Tasmania arrived, the club decided to proceed with investigating obtaining a special event call sign.

Dave VK7DC brought along equipment that belonged to Neil VK7NX S.K., to be sold on behalf of Neilâ€Ös family

The repeater committee advised the UHF CB repeater going well, and the other Mt Duncan repeaters are operational. The new link radio and VK7RALs repeater to be delivered to Shane Fuller, who will reinstall when going on a trip to the West Coast. Eric VK7EV has donated the Simoco link radio to connect with VK7RAA 2 metre site on Mt Arthur, this will allow amateurs on the West Coast to access the state-wide link via the Mt Read 2 metre repeater, which will RF connect to VK7RAL Companion Hill.

The Club officially swapped our 6 can UHF CB Diplexers, for a 4 can UHF CB diplexers and fittings, provide by Dion VK7DB for the UHF CB repeater.

The Club agreed that any equipment to be used-on Club repeater sites, are to be owned by the club. Dion VK7DB is to provide a costing for the club to purchase the 6m repeater, he currently has in the hut on Mt Duncan.

The Proposal to Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service, requesting a peppercorn lease for Mt Duncan, is nearly ready to submit.to Parks with official Lease paperwork.

Due to committee members Neil VK7NX passing, Andrew VK7XR moved a motion that Mark VK7MAR be elected as an acting committee member, till the next AGM, motion was carried.

Club members were able to rummage through technical books, radio information books and radio magazines, donated by Maryl wife of Bob VK7BY S.K.

Eric VK7EV explained the current situation re JOTA 2024, four local amateurs have offered to help, but would love at least two more volunteers.

For show and tell, our two retired broadcast engineers Brenton VK7HP and Terry VK7JAI brought along items.

Firstly, Terry showed an AWA SWR measuring unit for use between 400 and 500MHz. It was built for use with a particular type of equipment, used in the day. A multi-channel link for phone systems. His second item was a NEC 4Ghz travelling wave amplifier tube. It consisted of the internal tube, focusing magnets and wave guide input and output sections. They were used in Telstraâ€Ös 4Ghz radio links carrying Phone, TV and Radio services on Tower repeaters.

Brenton who is planning on operating on the 2200 metre band around 137kHz, brought along a home-built VLF to MF Bi direction coupler intended for use in low band transmitter and transmission line testing. The second item was a home built VLF to MF 9:1 matching transformer, intended to match a Beverage Antenna to a 50 or 75 Ohm coaxial line for receiving or low power transmitting.

Members enjoyed a chat, and tea and coffee for quite a while after the meeting finished.

October Forum Night - All things Repeaters and Beacons

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBavRnJ2l80

The forum night led by Hayden VK7HH focused on various topics related to repeaters and beacons in VK7 (Tasmania). Hayden began by sharing a story from Brian VK7BW about the early days of amateur radio when cross-band repeat functions were a novelty.

The discussion then moved to another fascinating story from 25 years ago when an American aircraft carrier docked in port. The crewâ€Ös military police repeater system interfered with Australia Post's radios, leading to confusion as American voices were heard on local frequencies. The post office workers were baffled, as the Americans couldnâ€Öt hear them, and it took some time before they realized the issue was caused by overlapping frequencies without any protective PL tones. This incident provided a week of unusual radio interaction for the post office.

The forum proceeded with pictures and technical discussions about various repeater sites across Tasmania, including VK7RAA, VK7RAB, VK7RAL, VK7RAD, VK7REC, VK7RAF and others. Participants shared updates on the current status of these repeaters, issues with access to some sites, and the importance of maintaining the repeater systems. Specific attention was given to the VK7RHT system on Mt Wellington and Grey Mountain, with discussions about technical challenges and interference problems.

Towards the end of the forum, additional topics such as the Reverse Beacon Network, CW, and the potential for a VK3RTV-like ATV Repeater were discussed. Hayden VK7HH thanked all contributors for their input and participation.

Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Nights

The Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Group nights kicks off again this Wednesday night with a huge night celebrating all things VK7!

VK7â€Ös have been writing articles and appearing in a number of amateur related magazines and online and so we will be taking a look at these. We also take a hysteric whoops historic look at some content from the 1960s Tasmania Division of the Wireless Institute of Australia monthly bulletin or as a notable amateur who is now sadly silent key used to call it “the Bullet-in”.

There is also a look at a very interesting and handy piece of test equipment using your NanoVNA.

On a Wednesday night people start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy.

There is always much discussion, experimenting, playing, talking, drinking coffee and tea, serious cunning plan development and general amateur radio shenanigans and world problem solving in the clubrooms as well!!

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/

We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube streaming channel and we also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.

See you there or on the stream.
