Silent Key
Keith Badcock VK7KM

It is with due sadness that I announce the passing of Keith Badcock, VK7KM.

Born 22/09/1946 and Passed away 07/09/2025.

Keith as most of us realise was one of natureâ€Ös true gentleman, always willing to help and assist where necessary.

Mornings have been rather bleak early on the repeaters, of which Keith was an avid user, he was continually concerned if there was a non-appearance of one of the regulars and he would follow-up with a phone call.

Keith received his callsign VK7KM in 1987.

His past was a real challenge in operating a large farm at Bishopsbourne most of his life with beef, sheep and cropping were his main income from 396 acres of prime Bishopsbourne land.

Several of his early years were spent in the Army and his sporting challenges were certainly full of multiple achievements.

In 1970 he was the winner of the Burnie Gift and was also a central umpire of Australian Rules Football the NTFA Umpires Association trained by the great Bevan Hutton.

His family life was one of his main priorities leaving behind his lovely XYL Foki who he married on 29/10/1983 he is survived by 8 siblings (7 boys and one daughter).

In later years he spent two years studying at the Bible College and was also a member of the local fire brigade.

The Funeral for Keith will be held on Friday 26th. September at 1.00pm, location Bishopsbourne Memorial Hall Bishopsbourne.

Vale Keith

Foki Badcock, Al VK7AN, Gavin VK7FLI, Rodney VK7HAM, Andre VK7AE and Graham VK7KT.

WWFF, SOTA, POTA and IOTA
Weekly Wrap-Up

With daylight savings just around the corner in VK7, now is a great time to prepare your portable kit and plan an activation to make the most of the longer daylight hours. We are fortunate in VK7 to have such easy access to a wide range of parks and summits, many of them right on our doorstep.

One of the most common questions for newcomers to WWFF, SOTA and POTA is how much time to set aside for an activation. The answer depends on your goals, operating style, and the gear you bring.

Getting your station on the air is usually quick and simple. A small vertical, end-fed, or linked dipole can be ready in about 5–15 minutes. More involved setups with masts and guy ropes might take closer to half an hour. Packing up at the end takes about the same.

On-air time varies between operators, and band conditions also play a role. A quick activation might only take around 20 minutes, while a longer session can run for several hours. Most activations typically last 1–2 hours, which is enough time to explore a few bands and log a good number of contacts. Travis, VK7VXT, will be setting off on the Overland Track this Sunday (14/9) and plans to activate several SOTA summits along the journey. Keep an ear out for his CQ calls, as these summits are rarely activated and are highly sought after by chasers.

Only one activation took place in VK7 this past week, with the Wednesday Northern crew making the trip east to Knockup summit near Targa. While there, they managed to log a few contacts with a mainland activator who was also out in the field activating.

    The miniature railway at Evandale

Platform 9 Âľ for the Hogwarts Express train

A Double Decker bus in Hobart and an old trolleybus in Launceston

The Fat Car at Mona and a couple of fierce looking trucks

A snow dog, cats and “big cats”

Other highlights were:

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

The NTARC club rooms opened last Wednesday night for a live presentation on the REAST YouTube channel covering Nano Vector Network Analysers. Considering the inclemency of the weather, it was well attended by members. It was very informative and will be followed up at the next club technical night with some hands on practice for club members and their NanoVNAs. Thanks go to REAST for providing the feed of the eveningâ€Ös forum.

Now for a couple of items from the last club technical night.

As you may have noticed there is a plethora of internal battery powered soldering irons on the market at the moment, it was indeed interesting to see a variation at our last club technical night and was definitely deemed interesting enough to be mentioned. Ian VK7IG had recently purchased one intended for a slightly different market.

Sold under the brand name FNIRSI, this model is the HS-02 and is marketed as an “Intelligent Soldering Iron with Portable Soldering Toolbox”. This iron has no internal batteries and is powered via a USB type “C” connector and cable. It feels as though it is meant for longer periods of field or bench work as it can be powered from a battery bank or pack. This would effectively give it a much greater run time than one with an internal battery. Usability is excellent, it is rated as a 100 Watt iron with a usability time from standby, while in its holder, to tip tinning within 2 seconds of being picked up! It really does come up fast.

Construction of the handpiece is brushed aluminium and silicon with its weight about 60 grams, making this extremely light and comfortable in the hand. Incorporated is a 25 mm high resolution wide angle colour display, mainly for actual tip temperature, but it also incorporates menu setup options and three user defined memories for pre-set temperature. Standard soldering tips range from 0.1 mm cones to 4.5 mm wedges. The handpiece even has a grounding point to eliminate static electricity if needed.

For comparison the “Tool Box” or rigid enclosure it comes in is about the size of a battery powered tooth brush case. It opens up to reveal space for five spare tip and element assemblies. Also included is a special high temperature silicone slag area to wipe hot solder and a captive “copper wool” for tip cleaning. An aluminium alloy soldering iron holder that tilts up from the case when in use and an inbuilt solder reel that dispenses from the side of the case. Well worth looking at if you are in the market for a new iron.

Lionel VK7ZLB presented a series of photographs showing his typical Winter VHF and above field day setups when he is in competition mode. He covered location, setups, usage and safety considerations for this type of portable or temporary equipment set ups including “the inquisitive passers-by”. Lionel combined all this with propagation considerations and ionospheric predictions for a well-rounded presentation. The technical aspect in itself was very interesting, but there were some pretty spectacular panoramic views. You can see why there are SOTA and POTA enthusiasts!

Now back down to earth, Lionel also brought in a couple of new items. Firstly a brand new, home-made, 1296 MHz T shaped power divider or phasing harness. This was constructed using back to back soldered SMA sockets for the antenna feed connections, plus a ÂĽ wavelength of 35 Ohm co-axial cable to the SMA socket on the bottom of the T which is the input to the power divider. All very neatly protected in heat shrink tubing. Lionelâ€Ös intends to use the phasing harness to feed his dual 1296 MHz Yagis as part of an ongoing project. He then covered the need for precision and accuracy in construction if you are after that fraction of a dB, then a fraction of a millimetre does matters.

The other newly acquired “toy”, well if you can call something that comes with its very own Rohde and Schwarz calibration chart, including attenuation to four decimal places, a toy!! It was a high precision 100 kHz to 12.4 GHz 50 Ohm dummy load rated at 50 Watts. It also has an inbuilt 50dB attenuated output suitable for testing and measurement. Thanks for the presentation and a look at your toys.

As always pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

EME News

From Richard VK7ZBX - last Saturday evening saw the completion of a contact that has been in the works for some time. John VK5OI and Richard VK7ZBX managed to make a contact on 10Ghz EME. This is the 1st time Richard has worked a VK5 on 10GHz EME and I believe it was John's 1st 10 GHz EME contact. At times we both had challenging location issues with visibility to the moon and various equipment hiccups but at 09:28 UTC on Saturday we completed a contact using Q65-60 Submode D with reports of -22 / -22.

John has a Mitec 1.1M dish with 30W, tracking compliments of K3NG system with a SDD3 slew drive, and Richard has a 1.8M dish with 20W, tracking via Raz Track and linear actuators for drive.

I love it when a plan comes together hi hi

September Presentation Night
How to use the RSGB EMR Calculator

https://www.reast.asn.au/event/how-to-use-the-rsgb-emr-calculator/

Join us for an insightful REAST presentation night on September 24th, 2025, starting at 7:30 PM at the Queen's Domain Clubrooms, as we explore the practical application of the RSGB Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) Calculator. This powerful tool enables amateur radio operators to model common antennas in typical household backyards, providing essential calculations for power, antenna type, and spatial arrangements. The EMR Calculator generates exclusion zones and other important parameters to ensure that your setup complies with safety standards, particularly when operating high-power systems.

This presentation is especially relevant for those considering high-power experimental licences. Phil VK2ASD from the WIA Education Committee, along with Justin VK7TW, will guide you through the process of using the EMR Calculator, offering real-world examples and practical tips. Whether youâ€Öre a beginner or experienced operator, this session will help you understand how to apply the tool effectively when submitting applications for high-power experimental licences, ensuring your station meets safety and regulatory requirements.

The event will be held in person at the Queen's Domain Clubrooms and streamed live on the REAST YouTube Channel, allowing all members to participate regardless of location. Donâ€Öt miss out on this opportunity to enhance your knowledge and ensure your amateur radio operations are both safe and compliant.
