Broadcast for July 2024
Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 1st of Ju
ly 2024 at 8 pm local time; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.
This month brings another repeat of an earlier broadcast, on this occasion itâ€Ös from 2002.
Once again we find a Tasmanian reference: Doug VK7DK (SK) tells of witnessing the crash of a Lockheed Hudson aircraft on his pa
rentsâ€Ö dairy farm in Leongatha Victoria.
There is a historic reference to the first Australia-to-UK radio contact made by A3BQ to G2OD in 1924. A description of the equ
ipment is included.
Ron, VK3AFW tells of his early adventures with crystal sets, starting at 4 years old, going on to a later interest in radar rec
eivers.
During WW2 a couple of POWs made a gallant attempt to escape from the notorious Changi Prison. The story tells of their epic bo
at journey.
In 1936 communication of train movements was all by Morse Code. John VK1EG started out as a railway telegraphist; this led to h
is serving in the RAAF and qualifying for a First Class Commercial Operatorâ€Ös Certificate.
John, VK2DEJ relates how, in early life, he made the acquaintance of a neighbour known as ‘Fireman Jackâ€Ö AKA VK2EJ. John re
eled in amazement at Jackâ€Ös great hoard of radio equipment. Maybe this helped spur John to later become an amateur himself.

Innovation in Amateur Radio - Bookings Now Open
The Tassie Ham Conference is being held on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2024 and is being held at the Sir Stanley Burbury Theat
re on the Sandy Bay Campus of UTAS.
Addressing feedback from the last conference - this 2024 event is fully catered - there will be endless tea, coffee and other b
everages, morning and afternoon tea and lunch on Saturday and morning tea and lunch on Sunday provided as part of the conferenc

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

We start off this report with the announcement that the Ben Lomond repeater has now been reinstated and is operational with upg
raded equipment and a slightly different callsign. To reflect the repeater location, the callsign has been changed from VK7RBH
to VK7RBL. To give recognition to the repeaterâ€Ös original owner, Barry Hill VK7BH, the voice identification has been recorded
again by Barry with the new callsign. The original Philips FM828, which has given sterling service for many years has been ret
ired and is replaced with a more modern Unilab KL450 with NHRC-2 controller. The cavity filters have been re-calibrated and all
antenna connections checked. There is now a 7 MHz negative offset between output and input frequencies to alleviate possible L
PID interference, so please check your radio programming. The solar power system was also checked and a fault was found with a
fuse holder causing excessive voltage drop. After fixing, the battery voltage returned to specification. An improved MPPT charg
e controller is planned to enable more efficient battery charging. Whilst on site, the local CB repeater used by the Ski Patrol
was checked and it was found that a small hole in the roof, made by falling ice, had allowed ingress of water around the cavit
ies, the resulting rise in humidity causing them to go out of tune and thus the repeater had failed. Using Tonyâ€Ös spectrum an
alyser with tracking generator, they were returned to correct tune and all was back in operation. Many thanks go to the mainten
ance team, Tony VK7YBG, Hayden VK7HH, Peter VK7ZPE and Colin VK7ZCF, who braved the icy conditions. Overall, the weather was as
good as it could be. Special thanks to Hayden who prepared the new repeater and installed the controller. Other trips are plan
ned towards spring and summer to install the new power controller and tidy up the power wiring, and to give the hut a spring cl
ean.
Renovations of a different type have been going on at the NTARC Clubrooms. The damage caused by the recent break-in was assesse
d and the decision was made to brick up the wall including the window, which was unrepairable. So, a timber frame has been inse
rted where the window was, and cladding attached to the outside in preparation for the re-bricking of the wall. Thanks go to An
dre VK7ZAB, Brendan VK7VIP, Stuart VK7FEAT and Idris VK7ZIR for their good work. The inside wall finishing is yet to be determi
ned. New bricks have been purchased, and it was a surprise and relief to find that the original brick profiles are still availa
ble. We have obtained the services of a bricklayer to complete the job. A large piece of plywood on the inside will have to be
a blackboard until the wall gets a new covering.
And now for something completely different, a LIVE presentation will be happening on Wednesday 3rd July commencing at 19:00 (7:
00 pm) in the NTARC Clubrooms, which will open at 18:30 (6:30 pm).
Presenter will be Lionel VK7ZLB and his subject will be valve testers in general and the famous AVO type in particular.
And now for some breaking news. Our contest hound, Peter VK7KPC has received another certificate. He was awarded 3rd place in t
he VK Shires Contest in the VK Single Op 10W All Mode division. Congratulations Peter.

Every week before the TECHNET on 3.567 MHz, Nic VK7WW runs a Slow Morse Course and TESTNET on 3.580 MHz at 7pm on Wednesday nig
hts. What a surprise this week was!

“Jordan VK3ACU tested a home brew, single transistor CW transmitter on 3.580 and had a contact with Nic VK7WW. Nic sent RST 4

So what is so amazing about that!? Nic was running a RIDICULOUS 120 watts and Jordan A SUBLIME 5 Milliwatts ! Thatâ€Ös five tho
usandths of a watt. AND the distance between them is over 460kms! Jordanâ€Ös Morse Key is probably over 100 time the size of hi
s transmitter… Oh and Jordanâ€Ös transmission was also heard by Peter VK7KPC. If you want to see the circuit and a video, jum

Last Wednesday night we started the night with an update on the Tassie Ham-E-Con - amateur radio conference that is occurring o
n the 1-3 November 2024.
We then welcomed a very special guest in David Giles VK5DG/7. Dave is working his way around VK7 on SOTA, Parks and the GreenCu
be Satellites. Dave took us through his amateur radio background and his involvement with the South East Radio Group SERG and t
heir involvement in the National Fox Hunting Championships on the June long weekend.
Dave then took us through a couple of his satellite awards including the 45 VK3 National Parks Keith Roget award which is the f
irst and only one using satellite operation in all 45 parks.
We then went through portable satellite operation using the Low Earth Orbit or LEOs then went into the fascinating GreenCube sa
tellite background from Italian Universities growing plants in space and testing plasma drives. GreenCube is our first Medium E
arth Orbits or MEO and it sits between the Van-Allen belts.
This means the GreenCube footprint is much more due to it being a MEO. Dave took us through in with pictures of the operation a
nd equipment the challenges of operating a MEO satellite and it is actually easier!
One of the novelties that Dave pointed out was that the power came from his MG4 electric vehicle that can operate in a Vehicle
to Load mode providing - 240VAC at 10A output from the car battery/inverter.
We then went through chasing grids and the AMSAT Rover Award and what satellite contacts count toward all awards except IOTA. D
ave then showed his VUCC - VHF/UHF century club - 100 grids using satellites and thanked JA9KRO who works on a ship giving out
many grids as the ship travels from one place to another.
Given the large MEO footprint the issue in operating is congestion and there is definite etiquette operating GreenCube.
We went through the GreenCube PC applications required - there are three - sat tracking, sound modem and Danish GreenCube termi
nal.
Dave commented that he has made more contacts on GreenCube than he has made on all other satellites and we finished with what m
akes a good GreenCube operator namely patience!
