Contest News
Winter VHF/UHF Field Day
Hello all from Richard VK7ZBX,
Winter Field Day is next weekend, be great to hear you all burning the spiders out of the VHF/UHF gear. Lets get those transver
ters going and those IC9700 plugged into some antennas.
Well, the weather has begun to chill off, so that means it must be getting close to time for the Winter VHF/UHF field day, yes
folks, itâ€Ös time to go somewhere cold and play radios for a while.
This year the field day will be held from 01:00 UTC on June 22nd through to 00:59 UTC on June 23rd. Plenty of categories to par
ticipate in, no need to go portable although it's a great opportunity to get out and about and play radio, but you can still op
erate from your home station. The field day is aimed at VHF and up to the best places to listen for activity would be 52.525, 1
46.500, 439.000 ,1296.150, 2403.150, our very popular 3398.150 and 10,368.150 on FM, and of course the usual SSB frequencies of
50.150, 144.150, 432.150 are always worth a listen or a call.
There are sections where you can operate on a single band, a section that covers 4 bands and the section for all bands that are
covered by your licence. There are sections for Home station 8 hours or 24 hours, and for portable stations for either 8 hours
or 24 hours and of course the Rover section for the ultra upwardly mobile operators.
Knowing your current grid square is a requirement for logging, so perhaps do some google earthing or use one of the many apps t
hat will let you know your 6 digit maidenhead locator.
VKCL is the preferred method of logging. VKCL is well suited to this contest and it can connect to your radio(s) and help ti mi
nimise logging errors.
Why not introduce a new licence holder to the world of field days, you never know where it may take them.
Please remember to submit your log after the contest has finished.

North West Tasmania Amateur Radio Club Meeting
Please note change of meeting date, to allow club members to assist with radio comms, at an equine endurance event.
The next club meeting will be commencing at 1.30pm on Saturday 15th June 2024 at our usual venue, the Scout hall, 73 Alexan
dra Road, Ulverstone. Afternoon tea will also be held.
Members are encouraged to bring items for show & tell, and club rooms are open till 6pm for members to socialise.

This Friday at morning tea we were greeted by, not necessarily a familiar face but certainly a familiar name and call-sign, Jor
dan VK3ACU. Jordan is recognisable as he has been a regular, for a number of years, on Wednesday Nights TestNet and TechNet ses
sions hosted by Nic VK7WW, both on air and on Discord.
Jordan is only over for a few days but I believe he and Nic have managed to pack a lot in to the days. It was good that you cou
ld squeeze in a visit to the club room morning tea, have a drink and chat with some of the members. We all wish you have a calm
trip back on the ferry.
While perusing the WIA web site I noted that congratulations are in order for one of our members. Peter VK7KPC, for his success
ful participation in the Harry Angel Memorial 80m Sprint. Peter obtained second place Australia and New Zealand wide in the CW
section, well done. I assume the certificate is in the mail.
As a follow on from last weekâ€Ös Technical Night when Peter VK7KPC, brought in a mystery device in a fiberglass bucket with a
lid. It turns out that the bucket was in fact a flotation device as well as a protective container for the piece of maritime ra
dio equipment it contained. On first inspection we thought it was a “Gibson Girl”, which basically was a “Survival Radioâ
€ť and generally found in life-rafts during WW2. However this particular unit was a “Marinetta 2”, manufactured in Denmark
by the “Electronik Devision of Dansk Industri Syndikat” or DISA for short.
Our confusion came about because both the Gibson Girl and the Marinetta had the same hour glass design shape, they are both col
oured bright yellow and both have a crank handle that attaches to the top.
Peter after some research found out the very entrepreneurial reason behind the similarity.
It came from a research article written by Bent Mogensen, in July 2013. I will quote a couple of extracts:
"DISA got the idea of buying up the old WW2 emergency transmitters known as the Gibson Girl, which had been produced in huge nu
mbers. To renovate and reuse the mechanics, they succeeded in producing a lifeboat system that met the technical requirements o
f the time at an absolutely competitive price. This gave Marinetta a very large market share worldwide.” “When it came to s
ourcing more, they developed the TRP1, electronic signaller to replace the old mechanical one, which was operated by the crank.
”
Peterâ€Ös find certainly answered the question of similarity.
These emergency radios, operating on 500 and 2182 kHz, were in use until the late 1970â€Ös when the implementation of Global Ma
ritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) was implemented. This was a worldwide system for automated emergency signal communica
tion for ships at sea developed by the United Nations.
If you take a look at the photos you will see one of the designation is for a “Morse Key” however to be more accurate it is
a Morse Push Button. Very logical to have a water proof button, considering the conditions it might be used in, but it was not
mentally expected. I canâ€Öt wait to see how Peter goes sending Morse code on a Morse Push Button for a change. HiHi
A big thanks to the Launceston Sea Scouts for their donation of a piece of history that will be restored and preserved for the
future.

June Forum Night

This event was the third forum night held on the second Wednesday night of the month and was well attended. It was all about AP
RS and Meshtastic networks and we invited enthusiasts to come along and share their projects and experiences.
We started with an introduction and then Scott VK7HSE who is a Tier 2 APRS administrator described APRS, communications and the
equipment he uses. Hayden VK7HH then took us through his digipeaters and equipment. Harry VK7HXT then showed his Meshtastic 90
0 MHz ISM equipment. David VK7DBX showed his Meshtastic 900MHz equipment and described where it was mounted at home and showed
his APRS phone interface. Lance VK7ZA talked about LORA protocol modules and gateways into APRS and Meshtastic systems.
Sean VK7WTF commented that you can even do audio over Meshtastic networks. Ollie VK7NFI showed the group his two 433MHz Meshtas
tic modules and we tool some comments from the streaming chat channel. Justin VK7TW showed his APRS equipment and we finished w
ith a question and answer session.

We get back underway with our WEGs nights this Wednesday night in the studio starting 7:30pm.
People start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy. The DATV studio fires up at 7:30pm with str

sion, experimenting, playing, talking, drinking coffee and tea, serious cunning plan development and general amateur radio shen

Low Frequency News
Celebrate SAQ on Alexanderson Day 2024
Almost a hundred years ago, on December 1st, 1924, the long wave transmitter at Grimeton Radio Station in Sweden, with the call
sign SAQ, was put into commercial operation, with transmissions across the Atlantic ocean, to the receiving station at Riverhe
ad and the replying transmitter station at Rocky Point, both on Long Island, NY, USA. While all the other transmitting and rece
iving stations in the RCA network since long are gone, SAQ has been preserved as a World Heritage Site and, amazingly, SAQ is s
till operational.
The design and manufacturing of such a robust a reliable radio transmitter was a monumental achievement by the Swedish-born inv
entor Ernst F.W. Alexanderson. Thank you Ernst!
The Alexander Association welcomes all visitors to Alexanderson Day, Sunday, June 30th, 2024, 09:30-16:00.
The unique Alexanderson alternator from 1924, with the call sign SAQ, is scheduled for two transmissions over the antenna on VL
F 17.2 kHz CW.
