The BIRD IS THE WORD.
As anyone who has ever worked a satellite - or does so regularly - working these birds, as they are known, has its rewards. A g
roup of researchers
here in Australia has also been working the birds, the species known as a white-backed swallow, using temperature-sensing radio
transmitters.
They've received some great results, listen up as John Williams VK4JJW
gives us the bird, as he did for NewsLine.
"No matter which hemisphere you live in, no doubt this year has already shaped up to be a time of weather extremes. Wherever yo
u are, you have a lot in common with the white-backed swallow, a prevalent species here in Australia with the very uncommon abi
lity to survive despite freezing temperatures to blasting heat. We are talking about as much as 50 degrees Celsius - and we Aus
tralians especially can relate!
To learn how the birds survive, researchers in central Australia's Sturt National Park outfitted some of them with tiny transmi
tters. This was not an avian Parks on the Air; this was a research project to monitor the birds' physiological responses throug
h bio logging - a way to record and transmit their body temperatures' changes as the birds slept in their burrows at night.
The result? A highly successful Worked All States of Bird Physiology. The collected data confirmed the scientists' theory that
a deep torpor - an essential near-shutdown of metabolism, heart rate and breathing - was essential for these birds, just as for
some other bird species, such as the tiny hummingbirds in some regions of the world.
The results were recently published in the journal "Current Biology" . The scientists called the transmitters key to their fin
dings because data could be gathered in the wild instead of an artificial setting, such as a laboratory. Hams, of course, would
not be surprised at radio's reliability.
After all, the researchers HAD created another Reverse Beak Network.

TV news, (FOX 56) have reported how a civil rights lawsuit has been filed
alleging retaliation and due process violations against a high school student.
According to a complaint, in January 2025, federally licensed amateur radios were confiscated by an off-duty sheriffs deputy fr
om a Southwestern High School student without a warrant.
According to the lawsuit, the student reportedly served as a volunteer firefighter and holds an FCC Amateur Radio License. On J
an. 31, 2025, the boys teachers aide had asked if walkie-talkies were allowed at school after noticing the antenna coming from
his backpack.
According to the lawsuit, no policy existed prohibiting walkie-talkies or two-way radios at school.
Later that day, his father received a call from the principal claiming that the school had received multiple reports from law e
nforcement regarding his sons radios.
The student was also charged its alleged.
Were talking about a minor boy. Were talking about a kid who had a hobby in the radio world and was punished for it. Through a
series of actions, a sustained series of actions against him, action was brought against him for violating a law that he litera
lly couldnt violate because hes a licensed FCC radio operator.
The sheriffs deputy demanded the Bowman family turn over the radios or theyd go to jail; further, he didnt need a warrant to ta
ke them
The Pulaski County court later found it undisputed that he was duly licensed by the Federal Communications Commission and noted
that he has not been accused of any transmission through a frequency reserved for law enforcement.
The charges were later dismissed with prejudice, with the boys family Lawyer calling it a victory.
COMMITTEE RE-EVALUATING RESULTS OF WRTC 2026 COMPETITION
This story takes us to the UK, where the World Radiosport Team Championship recently concluded.
This high-profile amateur radio competition is now taking an unprecedented move: Organisers are calling the final results into
question and are re-evaluating competitors logs. Jeremy Boot G4NJH from NewsLine has the details.
"The WRTC Organising Committee has announced that they have found discrepancies contained in competitors' log files from the ev
ent, which was held in early July in the UK. Mark Haynes, MDXR, organising committee chairman, released a statement on the 27th
of July saying that an emergency meeting had been held and the judging committee had been instructed to conduct a re-analysis
of the logs, since the findings could affect the teams' finishing positions. The statement appears on the event's website.
Mark said: [quote] "Whilst we do not want this to take a long time, I have instructed that this must be a thorough and complete
re-analysis to enable the results to reach a position of absolute conclusion" [endquote] He added that [quote] "WRTC has no pl
ace for foul play." [endquote] He was not specific about what suspected actions are believed to have interfered with the result
s. Discussion threads on the WRTC's groups.io reflector have said that pirated callsigns affecting multipliers are among the el
ements being scrutinised.

The trio of microsatellites described as "fire towers in the sky" have been launched.
As planned, Firesat-1, -2 and -3 were launched on the 7th of July. The project is supported by the Earth Fire Alliance and its
goal is to track various types of wildfires across five continents. As reported several weeks back here on WIA NATIONAL NEWS, t
he satellites have received support from a $26 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund and have the support of Google.
The non-profit Earth Fire Alliance is hoping to have enough satellites in place eventually so that every point on the planet wi
ll be seen every 20 minutes.
MARTS, The Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters Society represented Malaysia at the Third Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Conf
erence Preparatory Group for the WRC-27 (APG27-3) meeting in Sapporo, Japan,
this past week. "Their participation was aimed at supporting the position and role of the International Amateur Radio Union (IA
RU R3) in safeguarding the amateur radio spectrum," MARTS said in the statement today.
MILITARY JAMMING EYED AS FACTOR IN FATAL PLANE CRASH
Many of us have experienced interference or even jamming, the kind that disrupt a QSO. US military jamming, however, is being s
tudied as the source of the fatal crash of a medical transport plane into a New Mexico mountain. NewsLines Kent Peterson KCDGY
has the details.
"Federal investigators are looking at the role that scheduled GPS interference testing at the White Sands Missile Range in New
Mexico may have played in the deadly crash of a light medevac airplane, killing the two pilots and two nurses on board. The pla
ne was en route to picking up a patient. Five minutes before its crash into a mountain on May 14th, one of the pilots alerted a
n air traffic controller that they no longer had GPS signals.
According to several media reports, an air traffic controller requested that the military cease its tests of GPS interference -
and the military complied -- but testing resumed after the controller learned that the pilot was able to complete the flight v
isually. A report in the IEEE Spectrum said that the preliminary findings do not state whether the air-traffic controllers let
the pilots know that the jamming had been halted - or that it had started up again.
These findings were contained in a preliminary report released in June by the National Transportation Safety Board. Investigato
rs do not expect to reach any final conclusions until next year. The US Army site in New Mexico site is known to conduct tests
on spoofing and jamming systems and the US Federal Aviation Administration confirmed to an IEEE investigative reporter that jam
ming was also a concern during incidents in 2021 that led several close calls, or aircraft flying off course, in the region.

This year operators experienced good propagation and low noise on the bands.
There were approximately 370 Operators on air, and 70 logs were entered containing 6,355 QSOs.
19% submission rate is good as is a 12% increase in submitted logs over last year.
Congratulations go to Izaac VK4IKZ for winning the Youth Award. Izaac put in a great effort in the SOLP category with 2,184 pts
coming 8th overall out of 39 entrants.

ARU Region 1 Conference Papers Address Satellite Spectrum Issues
Papers for the IARU Region 1 General Conference, being held in Vienna, Austria, September 19-23, 2026, are now available online
, and several are of direct interest to the amateur satellite community.
Among the papers in the VHF+ (C5) section is VI26_C5_11, UHF Spectrum Situation, submitted by the Radio Society of Great Britai
n (RSGB), which addresses AST SpaceMobiles use of amateur spectrum. In April, the FCC announced that AST SpaceMobile (AST & Sci
ence, LLC) will be using the amateur 430 MHz band for 248 satellites in its planned low-Earth-orbit constellation, which aims t
o provide global cellular broadband communications. Centre frequencies are 430.5 MHz, 432.3 MHz, 434.1 MHz, 435.9 MHz, and 439.
5 MHz, each with 50 kHz bandwidth.
Another satellite-related paper is VI26_C3_45, the report of the ARSPEX Working Group, a specialised body of IARU Region 1 for
Amateur Radio Space EXploration.

In Nairobi they also have just had an ARISS contact, their very very first.
On 5 August 2026, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) hosted Kenyas first live Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS
) contact. This educational initiative linked a Kenyan audience directly with an astronaut in orbit aboard the International Sp
ace Station (ISS), KSA confirmed in a statement.

ational Space Station (ISS) as it passed within radio range of Kenya.

NASA is making progress in building the Moon Base, which will become a resilient outpost near the Moons South Pole for science,
technology, and eventual human operations. To advance lunar surface infrastructure development, commercial partners such as Bl
ue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, and Voyager Lunar Systems are working toward delivering landers by 2028. Thes
e landers will deliver the foundational architecture for a sustained presence on the Moon. Their progress represents major adva
nces in commercial lunar delivery and lays the groundwork for the systems and surface capabilities the Moon Base will rely on.
Phase I of the Moon Base architecture plan, taking place now through 2029, includes more than twenty robotic landings, with eac

re astronauts arrive, robotic missions will deploy critical scientific instruments that characterize the lunar environment, tes

On Thursday the 30th of July, The Kairi State School Radio Club, Using the callsign VK4KSS, had an on-air practical session as
part of their ham radio studies for their grade 5 and 6 enrichment class.
CQ CQ this is VK4KSS Victor Kilo Four Kilo Sierra Sierra calling CQ and standing by, Over.
Under the guidance of Stu VK4SDD the students made contact with many stations across VK4 on 40 Metres under trying conditions.
This time on air aids them in achieving a foundation licence and is good practice for the CQ Worldwide SSB Contest coming up in
October.
This has been Ben VK4 Yankee Tango for the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club. Proud Supporters of the Kairi State School Ra
dio Club.
The YOTA IARU Region One Summer camp has come to an end.
YOTA'rs, WERE AMAZED as to just how fast their the week flew by, how many incredible people they met, and how strong the friend
ships built have become.
Final day kicked off in the morning with an exciting 80m Amateur Radio Direction Finding fox hunt organized by the Austrian AR
DF team. Participants had to locate 5 hidden transmitters scattered across a 3 km course. All the time the magnificence of the
ALPS a backdrop.
Benjamin HB9HIH, took the top spot in the mens category with a lightning-fast time of 12:34, and tefania YO9-158/D, who led the
womens category with an impressive time of 15:36!
The grand finale of the week was the official Closing Ceremony.
Participants received their certificates, the ARDF winners were celebrated, and they took more than just a moment to express de
epest gratitude to all the incredible participants, hard-working organizers, and generous sponsors who made that unforgettable
week possible.

The build is based on the Neuro PlayGround Lite, a board built for physiological signal acquisition in the Feather form factor.
Its hooked up to an IMU sensorboth a MPU6050 or BMI270 workwhich tracks head movements to allow the cursor to be panned around
the screen. Other biological signals are then used to activate other standard mouse functions. Clenching the jaw fires off a l
eft click, while a triple blink fires a right click. Clicking and dragging is achieved by a double-blink. The jaw muscles are s
ensed via EMG signals picked up with gel electrodes on the skin, while the blinks are detected via EOG signals via the same con
tact points.
Commercial solutions in this realm exist, but its great to see how such a device can be built from the ground up.
