RAOTC News
Broadcast for September 2026
Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 7th of Se
ptember 2026 at 8 pm local time; thatâÖs tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.
This month there is a history given by Peter Cossins VK3BFG, about the Melbourne ATV repeater VK3RTV.
The feature item is read by Clive Wallace, VK6CSW. It takes an in-depth look at coax connectors, including why is a PL259 plug
known as a UHF connector and what does BNC stand for?
Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/VK7RHT state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX âSpect
rum TasmaniaâÖ via the BATC membersâÖ stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz. DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR,
439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.
The broadcast date again is Monday September 7th. Call backs will follow. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAO
TC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening to these broadcasts.
If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to audio files on the RAOTC website.

Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) News
Last week on the 31st August Richard VK7ZBX managed to complete his 1st EME contact on 23cm. Richard worked Ralph VK3WRE, then
worked Dave KG0D in Texas, Shinichi JS6UJS in Japan, Terry BA7NQ in China, then Don KE7NR in Arizona. Richard was pretty happy
to finally complete after some initial issues with sequencing that saw 2 preamps go to the great preamp sanctuary in the sky.
The station is quite moderate consisting of a Icom 9700 being GPS locked, a 2.4M mesh prime focus dish with a OK1DFC designed s
eptum feed, LNA from Goran at Antennas Amplifiers, and a SSPA designed around the module from VHF designs in Russia. Tracking i
s controlled using a SDD3 slew drive from Sun slew and WinTrak from Gary N8CQ. Richard is looking forward to working many more
stations on this band.
This weekend the 5th and 6th of September is the second leg of the ARRL EME contest on the bands 13cm and above. It runs for 48
hours from 0000 UTC on the 5th till 0059 on the 6th of September. All modes digital and CW. So, if you have equipment capable
of receiving these bands this weekend would be a great time to aim at the moon and see what you can hear. Activity can be track
ed on the HB9Q logger.
logger.hb9q.ch
This contest is timed for when the declination is optimised for the Northern hemisphere but there are many opportunities to hea
r activity. For those that have equipment that can receive on 10GHz the moon beacon on 10,368.024 MHz is currently operating on
Q65 sub mode E with doppler correction to JO54cg which is a fantastic resource provided by Per and the team at DL0SHF in Germa
ny. There are some stations that can generate some very strong signals on these bands so why not see what you can hear.
See you on the moon.

WWFF, SOTA, POTA, LLOTA and IOTA Weekly Wrap Up
The Parks on the Air (POTA) developers have been busy behind the scenes, working on an improved POTA website. The new site is n
ow in beta testing and is available for users to explore.
There are a number of upgrades, some of these include integration of modern software that significantly improves page load time
s and data downloads, a redesigned layout that adapts cleanly across mobile and tablet devices, and improved filtering options
for spots. One of the standout improvements is the new map view, which colour-codes parks based on your activity. You can quick
ly see parks youâÖve activated, parks youâÖve hunted, parks where youâÖve done both, and those you havenâÖt yet activated.
This looks set to be a fantastic feature for planning future activations, keeping track of your progress, and, of course, findi
ng plenty of new parks to chase!
To check out the new beta site, head to the website on the email edition of this broadcast.
Next.pota.app
Importantly, you donâÖt need to create a new account. The beta site uses your existing POTA login and production data. If you
spot something that could be improved, or simply have some feedback, you can send it directly to the developers using the Feedb
ack button on the beta site.
Jim, VK7JZ, got the boots back on after a short break from activations and headed to Mount Direction Summit in southern Tasmani
a. For those who might not know, we also have a Mount Direction in the north of the state! Jim made 11 contacts on 40m using hi
s Icom IC-705 and an EFHW antenna running east to west, strung between a squid pole and a tree. With gale-force conditions on t
he summit, Jim made sure to have a little slack in the antenna to prevent any mishaps. No one wants a broken antenna wire durin
g an activation!
Ian, VK7IAN, logged an impressive 63 contacts while activating Bribie Island National Park, located around 65 kilometres north
of Brisbane. The park covers nearly one-third of Queensland's only bridge-connected island, making for a pretty impressive acti
vation location.
Travis, VK7VXT, got set up on Mount Wellington despite some rather windy conditions. Travis activated the summit with four cont
acts on 146.500 FM.
Danny, VK7DHT, activated Fords Pinnacle Regional Reserve, located not too far from Lonnavale. Danny logged 16 contacts during t
he activation, becoming the first operator to activate this reference.
Rodney, VK7HAM, and Peter, VK7ZPE, teamed up on a wet and windy afternoon to activate Bradys Lookout State Reserve, located on
the West Tamar near Rosevears. The pair logged 48 contacts during the activation using an Icom IC-7300.

Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026
The Countdown is On!
With just over two months to go, Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026 is already shaping up as a genuinely national and international gatherin
g of the amateur radio community. Registrations are open, and we already have attendees booked from every Australian state as w
ell as New Zealand. This yearâÖs theme, âHack the Ether: Education, Ingenuity, Connection,â celebrates what amateur radio
does best: experimenting, learning, sharing ideas and finding ever more inventive ways of getting signals from one place to ano
ther.
The conference brings together amateurs, makers, educators, communicators and technical explorers for a fully catered weekend b
uilt around four streams: Hack the Mind, exploring education and learning; Hack the System, showcasing experimentation and inge
nuity; Hack the Culture, looking at community, engagement and connection; and Hack the Future, examining leadership, purpose an
d where amateur radio heads next. ThereâÖll also be pre-conference and post-conference activities, making this much more than
simply two days sitting in a theatre listening to presentations.
Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026 will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November at the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre on the University of
TasmaniaâÖs Sandy Bay campus in Hobart. With registrations already stretching across Australia and over the Tasman, and still
two months to go, itâÖs looking like being quite a weekend. The preliminary program is available and bookings are open now thr
ough the conference website. Search for Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026 and come and Hack the Ether in Hobart this November.

The first item is a quick update on NTARC providing safety communications and rider tracking at an Equine Endurance ride held a
t Santarena Park Scottsdale recently. Everything relied on 2 Metre voice communications, and good old paper. However electronic
card reader tracking was deployed in tandem at one checkpoint, this allowed âreal lifeâ field testing of the latest softwa
re version.
All the contingency had assembled by 6 am Saturday morning and were heading out to the checkpoints for the start of the 80 kilo
metre event at 6:30 am. Ride Base was staffed by VK7's AndreÌü ZAB, Stuart FEAT and Stuart ES. Checkpoints were operated by Ro
ger ARN, Idris ZIR and Stefan ZSB. With additional support from Jim JZ and Brian BW of REAST / WICEN, with Rob ARG and Pru from
NWTARC, along with Pete from the Ulverstone Radio Operators Club. Thank you Roger for another round of excellently coordinated
safety logistics.
The weather was indeed good to us and even the sun made a cameo appearance around mid-day. Operationally the day went smoothly
without any horse or rider mishaps. Thank you to all who assisted in the running of the communications for what ended up being
a truly multi group event.
Last club room technical night, Liam VK7WUF, showed us his brand new, all mode, HF transceiver, that supports eight HF bands. M
anufacturer by Buluti, the model uSDX-Plus is certainly a compact QRP unit.
It is based on SDR architecture, incorporating direct digital modulation on transmit and capable of up to 5 Watt PEP SSB output
and 3 Watt CW. An External CAT control connector is provided, making it ideal for digital modes like FT8, JS8, and FT4. Power
is provided either via the 13.8 Volt DC external socket or the internal 11 Volt, 4 AH rechargeable battery. An independent batt
ery charging connector is also provided. All of this functionality is contained within a very small foot print, the black anodi
sed aluminium case measuring 110 mm by 85 mm by 40 mm.
Once Liam has a semi suitable antenna erected for proper testing, I am sure it will be put through its paces and a run-down of
performance will be forth coming at a later tech night.
Eric VK7ZPE brought along a neat little field strength meter for us to have a look at. Despite its compact size, roughly that o
f a cigarette packet, it covers an impressive range from 100 kHz right through to 1 GHz. Most of the front panel is taken up by
a classic analogue meter movement, with a sensitivity control tucked neatly along the bottom edge. On top youâÖll find an SMA
socket fitted with a 150 millimetre flexible whip antenna. All the manufacturer markings and control labels appear to be in Ch
inese, adding to the mystery of the unit. ItâÖs an interesting piece of gear, and its styling is very reminiscent of the CB da
ys.
To stem any more questions, NTARC club rooms will be opening up to watch the REAST presentation, on Wednesday the 23rd Septembe
r, by Mogens Anderson and covering ADSB aircraft tracking. It should answer any questions you might have regarding that short v
ertical antenna on the peak of the club room roof. Doors will be open by 7:00 pm and at 7:30 mobile phones will be put on silen
t and we will cross to the live presentation on the REAST YouTube channel. So rather than sit at home watching, feel free to co
me along and watch in a distraction and stress free environment.
And now for something completely different. In case you missed Slow Scan TV this week, and if this is Sunday when you are liste
ning to the broadcast, then it is sixty years to the day that Canadian audiences saw the first TV series episode of Star Trek!
However if this is the Tuesday night rebroadcast, then it is sixty years to the day since it was first broadcast in the United
States! I just canâÖt believe that Canada was ahead of the United States! So according to Wikipedia, from September 1966 we ha
ve been boldly going where no man has gone before. Happy 60th birthday to Star Trek and the NCC-1701.
As usual pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under âBlogsâ for this broadcast.

Wednesday ExperimenterâÖs Group (WEGs)
Last Wednesday night we had Justin VK7TW in the studio and gave us an illustrated run through of what was covered at the ACMA R
adComm 2026 event.
We then got Ron VK7ME into the studio and Ron gave us a question about some calipers and posed the question about that is was.
Ron is a recent entry into the microwave bands and has made a 19 element 23cm yagi that he mounted on his roof and had some dif
ficulty aiming the antenna. So using one of RonâÖs other hobbies namely FPV Radio Control he did a temporary mount of an FPV c
amera to make sure he was pointing at Mt Wellington.
We had some good guesses from the chat and they are called Bisecting Calipers!
Ron and Justin then moved onto some other 3D printed items including a now coloured derwent valley topographic map, we then mov
ed to the print disasters and outlined what fixed it namely a new nozzle.
https://www.youtube.com/c/MainCave/videos
Justin then went through finally printing a benchie (after 250 hours!!), a Pajero dual USB panel and some coaxial cable managem
ent brackets and an on air sign for the studio.
Ron then took the audience through his recent ASA print of the 160m loading coil that failed initially and then the reprint sta
rted to lift but stayed adhered to the build plate long enough to complete.
This week is the NTP/GPS clock build night and it will not be streamed.
There was a Tassie Ham-E-Con reminder, future training opportunities, future events and space weather.
Our next WEGS night will be in a fortnight the 16th September and Wednesday evenings kick off early, with members drifting in f
rom about 6pm, many armed with takeaway containers or home-cooked dinners.
The DATV Studio broadcast begins at 7:30pm and around it unfolds the usual controlled chaos: lively debate, hands-on experiment
ing, gear tinkering, coffee consumption at industrial scale, the hatching of elaborate âcunning plans,â and the kind of wid
e-ranging amateur radio mischief and global problem-solving that somehow only ever truly makes sense inside the clubrooms.
