Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

This certainly has been a very quiet week as far as anything of a newsworthy nature goes. However, there are a few things to mention, namely a highlight, an anniversary and a trial.
The highlight was the first “winter period” general meeting for the year. It was held last weekend on Saturday, early in the afternoon. This is our normal transition from Wednesday night meetings because of the shortening of daylight hours and the inclement weather period we are entering.
Saturday general meetings will be the order of the day until winter is over, the weather improves, the days grow longer and we start Daylight Savings once again, in early October.
The anniversary is a by-product of the Covid lockdown that saw all face-to-face club activities cease in early 2020. However, Nic VK7WW or as we knew him then VK7BEE, suggested that he could run a weekly Wednesday night Tech-Net session on 3.567MHz under the club callsign of VK7TAZ. So with Nic hosting the on-air Net and Paul VK7KPA managing Discord, they went live in April. It was a monumental success and within a year had morphed to include a Test-Net and CW Morse code training session.
The rest, as you say is history, it has been successfully running for four years and must be getting very close to clocking up 200 evenings on air. It now also boasts good mainland amateur participation, even if propagation doesnâ€Öt always allow voice or CW reception in both directions, there is always the Discord channel. Phil VK7ZPD and Paul still keep Discord ticking away and also provide the off-air audio stream available when logged into Discord. Rick VK7HBR along with Phil, also have been known to stand in as the Guest Host and Net controller when Nic has been unavailable.
Thank you, Nic for your enthusiastic hosting and all who have participated in the nets, whether on air, on Discord or as a short wave listener.
As a trial, a year ago we started opening the Club Technical night sessions, held every second Wednesday night, an hour earlier. Doors opened at 18:30 instead of the previous 19:30.
This was initially intended for the duration of the winter period to provide more flexibility for those of us who live out of town and have to travel home later in the evening, often in inclement weather.
The earlier starting time certainly has proven popular and not just during the winter months. I think the trial start time might end up being recommended as permanent. If you have any thoughts on the matter please let one of the committee know.
As always, pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast.

UPCOMING EVENTS
TestNet and TechNet session - Every Wednesday, TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7 pm till 7.30 pm, then a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30 pm till about 8.30 pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.
Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10 am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. So why not pop in and join us for a cuppa, there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.
Club Room Technical night session - The next session will be on Wednesday the 24th April and will commence at the usual time of 6.30 pm, running through to about 10 pm, at the Club Room Archer Street, Rocherlea.
Finally - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5 pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

You may have seen those operators out in the bush or on top of a mountain with their antennas, batteries and rigs making contacts around the world and thought, I really wish I could do that!
The format will be a forum getting everyone together to share their experience, tricks of the trade, epic or not so epic fails and hints and tips of operating portable and mobile.
If you have any experience operating outside your shack be it through a contest, SOTA, POTA, WWFF, VKFF or Silos or some other “OTA” then please come along and share your experience with the group.
Bring along your “tricks of the trade” and show them off.
It will happen on Wednesday 8th May from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain Clubrooms.

June Presentation
Glitching Pulsars - the sequel we have all been waiting for!
https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/upcoming-events/?event_id1=2163
Just after the discovery of pulsars by Jocelyn Bell in the late 60s, we have known about pulsars glitching. For 50 years astronomers have been trying to catch a glitch live with a large radio telescope. All failed.
Until in 2018 an unknown Tasmanian did what no one else in the world had. And it got him published in the worldâ€Ös most prestigious journal.
What is a glitch? What is a pulsar? And what happened that made Nature publish his paper?
Dr Jim Palfreyman will present the sequel to his 2012 REAST talk. And like Godfather 2 and The Empire Strikes Back, it will be better than the original.
See you at the Queen's Domain Clubrooms on 5 June 2024 from 7:30pm. Presentation will be live and streamed via the REAST YouTube Channel.

Wednesday Experimenter's Group
I saw you do that double take..hihi!
Yes, the REAST Committee has decided to rename the DATV Experimenterâ€Ös Group to the Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Group or the WEGs to complement the Wednesday Afternoon Group or the WAGs. So we now have the WAGS and the WEGS.
People start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy. The DATV studio fires up at 7:30pm with streaming on the REAST YouTube channel and RF broadcasting. While the program is happening in the DATV Studio there is much discussion, experimenting, playing, talking, drinking coffee and tea, serious cunning plan development and general amateur radio shenanigans and world problem solving!!
Last Wednesday night was a potpourri of subjects and items. We started with Justin VK7TW outlining World Amateur Radio Day - held every year on April 18th. This was the date back in 1925 that the International Amateur Radio Union - the IARU was formed and year 2025 is the Centenary Year. The theme this year was “A Century of Connections: Celebrating 100 years of Amateur Radio Innovation, Community, and Advocacy”.
https://www.iaru.org/on-the-air/world-amateur-radio-day/
We then went to Rex VK7MO who gave us two short presentations - the first on the Solar Eclipse and the lowering of Sun Noise on 23cm with KB2SA & 3cm with K6QPV. Rex then moved to GPS Disciplined Oscillator antenna effect on stability. Rex did a comparison between a commercial quality GPS Antenna and a cheaper GPS antenna and recorded the results from obscuring the antennas. The conclusion reached was that both antennas give the same results so long as they are not obscured!
Justin then showed the Core Electronics - Resistor Colour Code Calculator
https://core-electronics.com.au/
We then revisited the End Fed Half Wave Antennas from Ben VK7BN's EFHW kit.
https://www.vk7ben.au/2019/05/03/more-experiments-with-efhw-antennas-part-2/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdTXQ9W_VsQ

http://gnarc.org/wp-content/uploads/The-End-Fed-Half-Wave-Antenna.pdf
Justin the delved into the history vault with RS-232 test equipment - first was a patch box with DB25s, then a more sophisticated RS-232 cable test box that can scan through each of the 25 lines and then a much more sophisticated RS-232 cable test box - Tristate tester - patch or switch. We finished with a homebrew RS-232 cable tester.
We finished with a space weather report, Future presentations and a Yaesu MH-36 Microphone where the rubber/plastic on the curly cord had some manufacturing issues - comment on the chat channel was “what a nightmare” to finish with!
This week in the studio we will have a report from the recent Equine Endurance event in Southern Tas from participants, a breakdown of the John Moyle Memorial Field Day Results with some of the participants and some mind bending, over the top, equipment from the vault and much more.

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/
https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/
We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube streaming channel and we also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.
See you there or on the stream.

World Amateur Radio Day
A special Centenary of amateur radio
Last Thursday was World Amateur Radio Day and this happens every year on April 18. It was on this day in 1925 that the International Amateur Radio Union was formed in Paris.
Amateur Radio experimenters were the first to discover that the short wave spectrum â€ö far from being a wasteland â€ö could support worldwide propagation. In the rush to use these shorter wavelengths, Amateur Radio was “in grave danger of being pushed aside,” the IARUâ€Ös history has noted. Amateur Radio pioneers met in Paris in 1925 and created the IARU to support Amateur Radio worldwide.
Just two years later, at the International Radiotelegraph Conference, Amateur Radio gained the allocations still recognized today â€ö 160, 80, 40, 20, and 10 meters. Since its founding, the IARU has worked tirelessly to defend and expand the frequency allocations for Amateur Radio. Thanks to the support of enlightened administrations in every part of the globe, radio amateurs are now able to experiment and communicate in frequency bands strategically located throughout the radio spectrum. From the 25 countries that formed the IARU in 1925, the IARU has grown to include 160 member-societies in three regions. IARU Region 1 includes Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Northern Asia. Region 2 covers the Americas, and Region 3 is comprised of Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific island nations, and most of Asia. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recognized the IARU as representing the interests of Amateur Radio. Today, Amateur Radio is more popular than ever, with more than 3,000,000 licensed operators!
World Amateur Radio Day is the day when IARU Member-Societies demonstrate our capabilities to the public and enjoy global friendship with other Amateurs worldwide.
In 2024 the theme of World Amateur Radio Day is: “A Century of Connections: Celebrating 100 years of Amateur Radio Innovation, Community, and Advocacy”.
IARU has represented the Amateur Services at international and regional regulatory bodies by relying on our volunteers who come from many countries and communities. IARU has been a sector member of the ITU since 1932 and the work of our volunteers has continued since that date with unmatched success, as was highlighted with the accomplishments at WRC-23.
Leading up to our centenary year, we should take time to reflect on the remarkable achievements of radio amateurs over the last 100 years. While the Amateur Services have been in operation for over a century, 1924 was the first year that intercontinental amateur communication became more or less commonplace. Since that time radio amateurs have made unparalleled advances in technology related to the Amateur Services that play a critical role today in sustaining world-wide communications and allow us to respond to global emergencies.
World Amateur Radio Day is an opportunity to reflect on our achievements since 1924. We should celebrate our diverse community and the advances and innovations we have made as we look forward to celebrating the IARU centenary next year.
