News of a Silent Key
- Dr Rex Newsome VK4LR SK
Dr Rex Newsome VK4LDr Rex Newsome VK4LR, Emeritus Lecturer in Psychology at University of Queensland,
tireless restorer of historic radios and living proof that disability is only a point of view,
went Silent Key in Brisbane on Wednesday 18th September 2013.

Here is an obituary written by long time friend Vern Crabb VK4FVC

Rex Newsome was born in the early nineteen thirties in Sherriff Street, Townsville,
with what is now known as cerebral palsy. His early years were very difficult,
as at that time nothing was known about this "disease".
As he grew up he spent many months in different hospitals while doctors tried all types
of "therapy" to "cure" him of his "malady".

When he was of school age he was barred from school as there was no one prepared to teach him,
because of his "problem". Public opinion at the time forced any "abnormal" people to be
kept hidden. (His mother was once confronted by a person in the street and told that she
should be ashamed to be seen in public with that thing and to take it home.)
Hence he was taHence he was taught at home by his mother who had not been educated past the age of twelve.

His father was a plumber and a keen fisherman so many of his weekends were spent with his
father at many different fishing spots. The roads were mostly unsealed and so he also learned
to help his father extricate their vehicle from bogs after rain.
He also learned to do general maintenance on the vehicle and became very self reliant.

Because he was unable to get a formal education he had to find something to do to fill in
his spare time. He had become aware of a group of amateurs playing radio around Townsville.
This caught his fancy, so he started collecting and repairing old radios.

However, he yearned to join them on air. It seems that the theory and practical was not a
problem however he did have some difficulty proving to the PMG that he was not in any danger
regarding the high voltages used in his home brew transmitters. Rex eventually also
proved to them that he could receive the required 18 words per minute proved to them that he could receive the required 18 words per minute which apparently
at that time was sufficient for him to pass the Morse test.
So in the late forties or early fifties he received the call sign VK4LR.

Despite all his setbacks he learned to ride a bike and joined the "Townsville City Wheelers"
and later even bought a motor scooter. Subsequently, he got a job at a laboratory washing
bottles and cleaning in the "lab" but the dream of a better education spurred him on,
so with no formal education he started studying.

The headmaster of Townsville High gave him the previous year's exam papers and a list of
the study books required to matriculate and so with a pile of literature he set about
studying, -early mornings - late at night - also at the laboratory with books propped up
behind the bottles as he worked.

Many bottles and 12 months later (1958) he matriculated passing all five required subjects.
Subsequently he received an invitation from the University of Queensland and early the next
yeyear moved to Brisbane to begin his Bachelor of Science Degree.
During his time at Uni he met his future wife Annette whom he married during his last
year in Uni. Also during that time his father died and he made the arduous trip to
Townsville to be at his bedside (in a 1932 Chevrolet roadster) when most of the
"Bruce Highway" was still unsealed.

With his science degree under his belt, his wife and a babe in arms, he moved to Sheffield
in England for a number of years where he had been invited by that university to work
on research projects; then later to Berwick working for the British transport authority
in road design with the disabled in mind. He made further trips to the UK to work
as a senior lecturer in a number of Universities. In 1982 he returned home for good
and worked on different committees for the betterment of the disabled and even took a
sabbatical to New Zealand for the same purpose.

He retired in 1998 thus allowing him to devote time to hobbies and family.

He has written a number of booksHe has written a number of books (one such book "Up the Stares" pertaining to the looks
he received when out in public). His hobbies! He has a room full of vintage radios which
he has lovingly restored to pristine "newness"(more than a hundred from what I remember).
Ham Radio, always a favorite, kept him in touch with friends all over the world and gave
him much enjoyment.
Sadly his wife predeceased him by a number of years he is survived by a daughter
Christine and a grandson.
