News from North Queensland

- Radios to the sound of Migaloo this weekend
As the news goes to air some radio amateurs in the Townsville region
have donned radio backpacks and put to sea to provide communications support
for the 59th Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim.
They attended yesterdays Main Swim Briefing at the Castle Hill PCYC and metThey attended yesterdays Main Swim Briefing at the Castle Hill PCYC and met
with some of the swimmers and skippers that they would be helping out.
Operators involved include VK4s HSV, AAH, PVH, ME, DA and FJMP at sea
and VK4s ZM, FR and ZZ taking up shore positions to shadow various
officials and prepared to keeping the information flowing.
They faced a brisk and early start getting to their observation points
and to their mighty vessels to be in position in time for the start of
the swim from picturesque Picnic Bay at 9-15am.
Competitors will then thrash their way 8 kilometers across Cleveland Bay
back to the mainland under the watchful eye of the radio amateurs, a fleet of surf skis
and safety boats plus the Townsville Coast Guard flotilla.
The swim is expected to be completed hopefully by 1pm with the 150 swimmers
making it safely back to Strand Beach.

Play with radios out in the field to the sound of high performance machinery.
Scribe Flying Finish times onto competitor time cards and relay safety, timing and
logistic info to and from Rally Control.
Operate at Rally Control in the Cardwell Showgrounds or at a stop point out in
the Cardwell or Kennedy State Forest. Primary comms VHF and UHF-CB.
Some time between competitor runs to play with HF amongst tall trees.
Start arriving on Friday afternoon, be at checkpoints with comm checks
completed by 9-45am Saturday, say hi to the 00 car from 10-30am and competition
will start at 11am and finish Saturday Night around 11-30pm.

- No- North Queensland Amateur Radio Convention
The 21st Bi-ennial North Queensland Amateur Radio Convention will be happening
in Charters Towers from Thursday 3rd to Monday 7th October 2013, with
primary venue and events happening at the Charters Towers Golf Club
from afternoon Friday 4th to Sunday afternoon 6th October.
Displays, Talks, Awards, Raffles, Prizes, a home brew afternoon, some golfing comwill all be a part of the
convention proceedings.
There are some school reunions happening at the same time and motel and cabin
accommodation is scarce, but can be had if you ring around or head online.

WICEN Queensland holds a net every Sunday on 7075kHz from 8-30am (2230UTC)


The net caThe net calls in regular stations and then invites new stations to call in.
If conditions are poor on 7MHz, net control might move to around 3600kHz
depending on how pliable the net operators are.
Mix it with other WICEN ops and call in on the net !!
