Sad news into the newsdesk that TARCadian
Bill Summers VK4WFS went Silent Key on Monday January 28th 2013.
Bill was a member of theTARCinc and a devotee to the original digital mode -
Morse Code - for many years, regulary sending on the Gnarly Net on the dipole
strung across the swimming pool until illness stopped him from getting on-air.
Illness also stopped Bill from setting up his famous Christmas Lights and Animated
Figures display which he and board of control Olive would assemble every year -
a display which was one of the star attractions on Pricey's Christmas Lights Convoy
and the TARC MXLT.
A tentative date and time has been set for Bill's funeral - Morley's Chapel
at The Lakes, Townsville on Tuesday 5th February at 10-30am. Please keep an eye
on the Townsville Bulletin Saturday 2nd February issue for confirmation of arrangements.
All in Amateur Radio that knew Bill need to attend to give him a good send-off.
Our heartfelt commisserations go out to XYL Olive and family and hope support of
family and friends help during this sorrowful time.

News from Central Queensland
- Clairview Gathering
The Clairview Gathering is a yearly event where Radio Amateurs meet
at a spot on the coast between Rockhampton and Mackay to relax, talk
radio, re-establish acquaintances and participate in the world renown
Saturday Night Mega-Auction. There might even be some fox-hunting and
there will definitely be RAFFLES ! There is a rumour going about that
George/VK4HAN might be getting a hair-cut again.
The Gathering is one of the main revenue raisers for the
Rockhampton and District Amateur Radio Club Inc and
Mackay Amateur Radio Association.
It happens in 2013 during the first weekend in May from
Friday evening 3rd to Sunday morn 5th May.
Those who are keen to chill out completely in one of the most relaxing
and laid back venues in the cosmos arrive earlier and stay later.
The Clairview Gathering is so popular that on-site accommodation is
close to being booked out already, so if you want to go you will have to
very quick. Otherwise there are nice camp, caravan or motor-home sites available too.

- TARC Management Meeting this Tuesday
The Management Meeting of the Townsville Amateur Radio Club
Inc happens this Tuesday 5th of February from 7-30pm at the Club Rooms
perched atop the SES HQ Green Street West End.
Make sure you bring along something for the Show and Tell session.

- North Queensland Net now has eComms
The North Queensland Net, which happens every Sunday Evening on 3605.4kHz
from 0930UTC (which includes a live cross from 1000UTC onto 2metres in
Townsville) has been attracting quite a few check-ins and Richard/VK4FRJG
is doing a stirling job getting it over onto 2metres.
In keeping with > eComms < theme Chris/VK4FR and Bob/VK4DA have been experimenting
with bringing more onto the 80m part of the net.
They have been trying the Netlogger program with limited success.
Netlogger shows who has checked in (if Chris can enter them quick enough!!)
and has a chat window to make comments during the net.
Chris and Bob have had some issues but will persist for another round and see if it isnt
operator induced.
To use Netlogger you need to download and install the software from
http://www.netlogger.org/
There also has been a session of ICQ up and running.
Lyn VK4SWE checked in from Sweers with an update on the wild weather.
She wasnt able to monitor the net but sent in some signal reports the previous week.
Facebook also has the TARC group accessible to TARC members and any comments
from listeners would be welcome there. Chris will try to start a chat on
TARC Facebook group when the net starts for comments that can be passed onto
the net from listeners who dont wish to or unable to join the net.
Skype has been the standout so far but not without some teething problems!
It has the chat ability like ICQ but also supports HF bridging which will
enable members to listen AND join the net from either their PC or smart phone.
Chris and Bob see this as a real bonus for those travelling who may like to
check in or listen in.
Bob is also streaming the net vies to have the QRZ page updated to reflect these > eComms < modes
this week and while some of the modes wont be available during the net this coming
long weekend they will all be back online and pumping the following weekend.
Overall it's intended to be another medium for contact and information during
the North Queensland Net and also to provide those on the Wallaby with the
ability to catch the net, and hopefully encourage those in the wider area
to provide some signal reports on stations heard.

WICEN Queensland holds a net every Sunday on 7075kHz from 8-30am (2230UTC)
The net calls in regular stations and then invites new stations to call in.
If conditions are poor on 7MHz, net control might move to around 3600kHz
depending on how pliable the net operators are.
Mix it with other WICEN ops and call in on the net !!
