The question you need to ask yourself is this:

Is /dev/sdb1 really /dev/sdb1 if you are booting from it?

When you install Lenny on an Asus eeePC you have to fondle the GRUB files
if you booted from the inbuilt disk (an SSD) but have installed Lenny to a
USB disk or the SD card reader.

i.e. when I boot my eeePC from internal disk, the SD card reader is
/dev/sdc but when I boot from it then it is /dev/sdb. A right royal pain
and the Lenny installer generated files as if it was /dev/sdc. This could
be your problem.
