I think ive tried almost ever *flavour* of Linux in my search for an OS to
support my work on UIV32/BBS Packet. On some Mandriva is one its nigh
impossible to get a telnet connection, some recommend Win Emulator aka
WINE but in my experience its very iffy and far from reliable. However,
have now had Kubuntu -a derivative of Ubuntu- on my Notebook 1.6ghz and
its excellent for use of Xastir 1.9 The Maps are no way as good as Roger
BARKER'S G4IDE (SK) UIV but the tracking via satellites is the bees knees.
In for a penny in for a pound..

Once the OS is installed taking over the whole of the hard disk, as with
all Linux you will be invited to download all the updates and this will
take almost all night so leave the job to end of day.

When you surface into shack carry out the necessary reboot the go to
terminal screen and write sudo apt-get -y install xastir* you will be
asked for ur password once that is entered the download will begin F R E
E!

Allow about 15 minutes then do another reboot.

To start Xastir open the terminal screen and type at the prompt$ xastir &
then press Enter in about a few seconds the screen will open. Go to File
and configure and enter all your notes.

Linux defrags itself and if left on 24/7 it will handle everything for
you, all necessary downloads will be sorted in the early hours of morning
installed ready for when ur next in shack.

YES it is not perfect viz i still cannot make it recognise my WiFi card
and that bugs me because its an excellent program. But hey, what the heck
its relaxing and you can quite freely make your own programs and offer
them to the rest of the community F R E E!

For BBS simply open the terminal and enter telnet and addy followed by
port press enter and soon in seconds u will be connected to ur sysop. Now
ive cut out a lot of the tedium by just writing my own scripts and pasting
them in.... If i can help further please write to me.
