2009 New Mexico QSO Party Rules
1. Object:
a. Stations outside New Mexico work only New Mexico stations in as many New Mexico
counties as possible. Stations inside New Mexico work anyone in as many New Mexico
counties, states, Canadian call areas, and DX countries as possible.
2. Contest Period:
a. The first full weekend of February from 1700Z (10am MST) Saturday through 2359Z
(4:59pm MST) Sunday. Contest duration is 31 hours. Participants may operate for the
entire duration of the contest.
3. Contest Bands & Suggested Frequencies
a. Contest bands: 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, and 6 meters
b. Contacts on WARC bands and VHF bands (above 6 meters) are not permitted.
c. Suggested frequencies:
i. CW: 1850, 3550, 7045, 14050, 21050, 28050 kHz and 50.095 MHz.
ii. Phone: 1850, 3925, 7260, 14280, 21380, 28380 kHz and 50.130 MHz
iii. Digital: Around the customary calling frequencies by mode
1. NOTE: The frequencies above are only suggestions. If other stations
are using a frequency for a QSO, net, or another QSO party, no worries!
Just call “CQ New Mexico QSO Partyö (or search for NM QSO Party
participants) on an adjacent frequency.
4. Contest Mode
a. SSB, CW, digital (any computer-to-computer mode is considered digital)
5. Classes
a. Single Operator. One person performs all operating and logging functions. Use of
helpers and spotting nets (operator arrangements involving assistance through DXalerting
nets, Packet Cluster, etc) is not permitted. Only one (1) transmitted signal on
the air at any time. All transmitters, receivers, and antennas must lie within a 500-meter
circle.
b. Multi-Operator. Those obtaining any form of assistance, such as relief operators,
loggers, or use of spotting nets. Only one signal per band per mode allowed at any
time. All transmitters, receivers, and antennas must lie within a 500-meter circle.
c. Mobile. Mobile is a station that is self-contained (radio, antenna, power source)
capable of motion. Motion is as defined in County Hunter rules
(http://www.countyhunter.com). This includes portable stations. There are three
classes of mobile/portable operation.
i. Single Operator. One person performs all operating, logging, and driving
functions. NOTE - Operating in this category does not require simultaneous
operating, logging and driving. Operators who choose to simultaneously
operate, log and drive are reminded that doing so is extremely dangerous –
safety first! The use of helpers of any kind including spotting nets is not
permitted.
ii. Single Operator Plus Driver. The entrant performs all operating and logging
functions and has a separate driver. The driver may not assist in any operating
or logging functions. Please note the drivers name in the log entry. The use of
spotting nets is not permitted.
iii. Multi-Operator. Any number of operators for competition purposes. Anyone
logging or spotting are considered operators for the purposes of this contest.

6. Power. Three power output categories for all categories. Logs not showing power output
category will be listed as high power.
a. QRP: 5W output or less
b. Low Power: > 5W -150W
c. High Power: More than 150W
7. Exchange
a. New Mexico stations: RST and county
b. Non-New Mexico stations: RST and State, Province or DXCC entity
8. QSO Points
a. Each complete Phone contact is worth 1 point
b. Each complete CW contact is worth 2 points
c. Each complete Digital contact is worth 2 points
9. Multipliers
a. Power Multipliers (the highest output power used during the contest will determine the
power multiplier for all contacts.)
i. QRP: 5W output or less: 3
ii. Low Power: > 5W - 150W output or less: 2
iii. High Power: more than 150W output: 1
b. Multipliers for New Mexico participants
i. Multiply QSO points by total of each different NM county worked (up to 33),
states worked (up to 50), Canadian provinces worked (up to 14; see below) and
DXCC entity worked.
ii. List of Canadian Provinces: Canada: NB (VE1, 9), NS (VE1), QC (VE2), ON
(VE3), MB (VE4), SK (VE5), AB (VE6), BC (VE7), NWT (VE8), NF (VO1), LB
(VO2), NU (VYØ), YT (VY1), PEI (VY2); Note – These are standard ARRL
abbreviations.
iii. Each multiplier may be counted ONLY ONCE regardless of mode or band.
c. Multipliers for Non-New Mexico participants
i. Multiply QSO points by total of each different NM county worked (up to 33).
ii. Each multiplier may be counted ONLY ONCE regardless of mode or band.
10. Special Bonus Station
a. A QSO with the sponsoring club’s call sign, N5M, will add a 500-point bonus for each
mode (Phone, CW, and Digital). A maximum of 1500 points may be earned in this
manner (not 500 points for each QSO on each different band). These points are added
after all other scoring is completed (they are not multiplied by the “multiplierö). The
Special Bonus Station will count for its normal county multiplier.
11. Scoring
a. Total = (QSO points from all bands x total multipliers) + Special Bonus Station bonus
points
12. Miscellaneous
a. Call signs and exchange information must be received by each station for a complete
QSO.
b. All contacts must be made without the assistance of intermediary stations, such as
repeaters, digipeaters, satellites, etc.
c. Stations may be worked only once per mode, per band.
d. Your call sign must indicate your DXCC country.
e. Mobile logs: New Mexico mobile operations must submit separate logs for each county
activated; a mobile entrant's final score will be the cumulative total score of all
submitted logs. The final score will be determined by the log checkers.

f. New Mexico mobile stations that change counties are considered to be a new station
and may be contacted again for point and multiplier credit. Mobiles should sign call
sign / county.
g. Any New Mexico station on a county line may be claimed as a QSO and a multiplier
from each county (example: 2 QSO's and 2 multipliers if on a county line between two
counties). County lines, whether land or water, are defined as per "County Hunter"
rules.
h. For logging software developers, please contact Brian N5ZGT (callsign at arrl.net)
before proceeding with electronic log development, as contest rules may change.
13. Reporting
a. Entries must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2009.
b. Summary sheets must include log sheets and NM county check sheets. Use the forms
provided on the New Mexico QSO party website at
http://www.swcp.com/~n5zgt/nmqsoparty.
c. Electronic logs: Electronic logs will be accepted only if (a) they are in Cabrillo format,
and (b) a Summary sheet (even if electronic) is submitted with the log to assist the
volunteers who are scoring the event. Logs and summary sheets may be emailed to
nm-qso-logs@laarc.org
i. For a listing of Cabrillo-format-compatible logging software that supports the
New Mexico QSO Party, please visit the New Mexico QSO Party website.
d. Paper summary sheet entries (including logsheets and county checksheets) may be
submitted via postal mail to:

e. Final results will be posted on the New Mexico QSO Party website.
14. Awards
a. Plaques, or trophies or certificates will be awarded to first place winners in various
categories. Certificates will be awarded if plaques are not available. Second place
winners will receive certificates. Individuals in winning Multi-Op teams will receive
certificates. See the current list of available awards and sponsors at
http://www.swcp.com/~n5zgt/nmqsoparty. Sponsorship of awards may be changed at
the discretion of the judging group based on contest category entries.
b. Special awards may be made at the discretion of the New Mexico QSO Party Contest
Committee. The committee welcomes individual hams or clubs to sponsor awards.

c. Participants may purchase a participant certificate for $2.00 cash (covers certificate
and cost of postage). A summary sheet (including logsheets and county checksheets)
must be submitted to be eligible for a participant certificate. If you are submitting a
paper summary sheet, please include payment with that paperwork. If submitting
electronic logs, please send payment via postal mail to the address shown above –
include the name and callsign to be printed on certificate(s).
15. Condition of Entry
a. Each entrant agrees to be bound by the provisions, as well as the intent, of this
announcement, the regulations of his or her licensing authority and the decisions of the
New Mexico QSO Party committee. Participants will not hold the New Mexico QSO
Party or its sponsors liable for any consequences resulting from any activity associated
with this contest.
