IRTS Social Media Presence
IRTS is joining a growing global movement to bring the spirit of amateur radio to new audiences through social media. We're at the early stage of improving our social media presence, and we'd love your help in sharing what makes our hobby special. Whether it's photos or short videos from your club events, portable activations, station setups, rare QSOs, every contribution helps showcase amateur radio in Ireland. If you or your club don't have a social media presence of your own, this is a great opportunity to get involved! All submissions will be properly credited and shared with you for review before posting. Please reach out to the IRTS PRO Howard EI9LC via email to irts_pro /at/ irts.ie
EIOMAR is Back on Air
EI0MAR, the amateur radio station at the Hurdy Gurdy Museum of Vintage Radio in Howth is back on the air after recent storms destroyed the HF antenna. They are grateful to Mike Keane, EI4DF for his kind donation of a vertical HF antenna to the station. Last Thursday, Tony EI5EM and SWL Reg Shannon installed the new antenna on the roof of the Martello Tower. The weather even smiled on them when the rain stopped for a few hours during the installation. The club is now looking forward to the annual International Marconi Day event in April. Watch this space for more details.

Update from Shannon Basin Radio Club
Shannon Basin Radio club has organised a Parks on the Air (POTA) activity. This will take place on Saturday March 21st from 09:00UTC to 12:00UTC. The club is fortunate to have several registered parks close by. Currently, ten club members will be heading off in small teams of two or three to activate parks across the midlands. Support is most welcomed from radio operators to work the stations and SWLs to log stations received. Afterwards, they plan to meet up in person for a well-deserved cuppa, a chat, share experiences, and compare setups. The real purpose of the event is to have fun, learn about POTA, and compare field/potable setups in addition to generating on air activity. There should be good fun to be had for anyone listening in on the EI2SBR repeater and indeed anyone interested in chasing POTA that morning. More details will unfold as the event approaches the event via the club website sbrc.ie and their social media channels.
VHF/Microwave News
The latest VHF+ Newsletter is available on the IARU Region 1 website. The IARU VHF+ Committee would like to inform operators about a new revision of the VHF Handbook. Specifically, the contesting section has been updated and a rule on self-spotting has been added. You can find Version 10.03 of the VHF Handbook at iaru-r1.org/reference/handbooks
AMSAT has announced a Student on the Air Days activity. The rules are simple: licenced students are encouraged to get on the air on the first and second Tuesdays of the month, as satellite passes and schedules allow. Student to student contacts are especially welcomed, however all licenced users are welcome to join in the fun on all amateur satellites. For further information, monitor the various AMSAT media accounts on Facebook and X for timely updates and announcements. Reports of activities and contacts can be emailed to Carsten, KQ4SJM whose email address can be found on QRZ.
Tribute to the Father of FM Radio
A unique tribute to one of radio's greatest inventors is making waves in the Irish Ham community this week. Giorgio Bardelli, callsign EI8IHB, has announced the creation of a "sonic archive" dedicated to Major Edwin Howard Armstrong, the father of FM radio. The centerpiece of the project is a track titled "Edwin's Requiem (River House)". More than just a song, the piece is a lyrical history of the "Radio Wars," meticulously documenting Armstrong's life and his technical battles. Listeners will find specific references to the 1935 IRE demonstration and the 1945 FCC frequency shift. This move to the 88 to 108 MHz band famously rendered the major's original equipment obsolete. The track will hit streaming platforms on March 16th, 2026.
Lough Erne Amateur Radio Club Rally
Lough Erne Amateur Radio Club will hold their annual rally at the Share Discovery Village, 221 Lisnaskea Road, Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, post code BT92 0JZ, on Sunday, the 17th of May. The doors open at 11 a.m., the entry fee is 5 pounds sterling or 5 euro. There will be various trade stands for equipment and components. To book your space, please contact Alan at argault91 /at/ gmail.com
