July Edition of the IARU Monitoring System Region 1 Newsletter

The July edition of the IARU Monitoring System Region 1 newsletter has been published. It is dominated by reports of military-type signals including over the horizon radar on the HF amateur radio bands. These include signals of Iranian and Israeli origin. Strong signals coupled with good propagation at times mean that these intruders can be quite strong and could be confused with potential local QRM sources. It is well worth reading the newsletters which include examples of the signals to learn more about them.

Interested parties who want to report intruders on the amateur bands are encouraged to send their observations to the Regional Coordinator including the following information: your identification or callsign, the frequency, time in UTC, day, month, any possible identification of the signal, mode, signal strength and any remarks that help describe the signal, a recording, and radio location if possible. Michael Foertig EI3GYB is the national coordinator for Ireland. You can find the newsletters and contact information at www.iaru-r1.org

Simulation of Optical Telegraph Experiments from 230 years ago

On the 17th of August as part of Heritage Week, a team of volunteers led by Ray Jordan EI2AH, with the support of the Heritage Council and others simulated an early form of visual communications, used long before electric telegraphs and telephones were invented. Longford-based Richard Lovell Edgeworth's pioneering optical telegraphic message using semaphore from Dublin to Galway was first tested in the late 1790s and trialled during the 1803 and 1804 period. Using a mix of old and modern technology, the volunteer team simulated a transmission from Kilmainham, Dublin, to the campus of the University of Galway on Saturday August 17th. Details are available at www.mariaedgeworthcenter.com
