DESECHEO 2008 ---> First hand information delivered by a reliable source
indicates that "there is a tentative agreement to facilitate access to the
Desecheo Island National Wildlife Refuge by amateur radio operators in
conjunction with future U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service management
activities in the refuge. The plan would allow amateur radio activation of
Desecheo for up to 14 days under strict guidelines and close USFWS
supervision.
USFWS expects to grant a Special Use Permit for amateur radio operations to
one group selected from among large number of prior applicants. These
applicants have recently been contacted by the agency and provided a number
of stringent requirements that must be met. They were told that if they are
still interested in operating from Desecheo they had 45 days to submit a
proposal. The letter was dated 30 June 2008, with an August 14th deadline.
The final selection will be made based upon which proposal best satisfies
USFWS requirements.
The timing of this operation is still uncertain, but is likely to be in the
September through December 2008 time frame. The actual dates of the
operation are dependent on a number of variables, but the team and DXers
should have a minimum of 30 days notice. We are not sure, but we believe as
many as a dozen proposals have been submitted. Apparently, the final
selection will be made by a three person panel".
MICRO-DXPEDITIONING UNCOVERED ---> Low-cost airlines have brought us a new
era, along with modern technology which provides us with high-calibre 100
watt transceivers for less than three kilos. "Micro-DXpeditioning
Uncovered", the new book (100+ pages, with pictures) by Roger Western,
G3SXW, collects the stories of visits to over 20 mostly European DXCC
entities, all done on the cheap, mostly just day-trips or over-night stays.
For further information, please contact G3SXW (e-mail address at qrz.com).
LOGS ---> Pictures and log search for the 25-30 June operations by
OY/LA7WCA and OY/LA6FJA from Elduvik, Faroe Islands are now available
on-line (http://www.la6fja.eu/dx/oy.html). QSL via home calls, direct or
bureau. Please note that whilst 1 IRC covers return postage to all
destinations, 2 (two) USD no longer do. [TNX LA6FJA]
LOGS ---> The log search for the recent YU8/S56M operation can be found at
http://s50clx.infrax.si [TNX S50U]
ROCKALL 2009 ---> A new attempt at landing and operating from Rockall
Island (EU-189) is being organized by Andy Strangeway, aka "Island Man",
tentatively between 19 May and 1 June. Details can be found at
http://islandmanrockallexpedition2009.com/.
YO DX HF CONTEST ---> The Romanian Amateur Radio Federation (FRR) invites
amateur radio operators all over the world to participate in the annual YO
DX HF Contest, which will be held on 30-31 August (from 12 UTC to 12 UTC).
Participants in the contest who meet the award requirements will receive
the YO All Districs Award (1st class) free of charge. Complete contest
rules and results of lats year's edition can be found at
http://www.hamradio.ro/ [TNX YO2DFA]
+ SILENT KEYS + Bob Leek, VE3TFD, a 25-year veteran of the Toronto Fire
Department, lost his life in the response to a propane depot explosion that
occurred on 10 August.

attack on 10 August. The alleged murderer has been arrested.
Other recently reported Silent Keys include Doug M. Hill (G3ZWH), Glenn
