This year's RSGB HF Convention takes place over the weekend of 10-12
October at Wyboston Lakes Centre, Bedfordshire. HFC is undoubtedly the
best event in the UK to find out about the latest HF happenings. The
lecture programme traditionally includes speakers selected from the
world's top HF DXers.

Responding to the requests of members, the RSGB is pleased to announce
that it now has a 'normal' phone number. The new number is 01234 832700,
although the old 0870 number will continue to be valid for the time

The British Amateur Television Club has announced a new amateur
television streaming video site. It brings streamed ATV to the internet
and allow cross repeater working from its multi screen display. The site
will also carry a library of ATV programmes and be a port for other ATV
events that will be streamed from around the world. The site is at
www.batc.tv. If you would like to stream your repeater, have a live
event coming up you would like to stream, or if you have library ATV
material suitable for this site, please contact info@batc.tv.

The RSGB National CW Field Day Contest will take place over the weekend
7 and 8 June on 1.8 to 28MHz.
Please note that there are double points available for contacts on 10m
and 160m. With the increase in participation in the Club Championship
series, it is hoped that there are even more CW operators who will
take part. Exchange is RST and serial number.

Following a request from the GB3WES beacon keeper, the 5MHz Working
Group has decided to remove the pulse sequence from the transmission.
Any members still wishing to experiment using the pulse sequence for
studying the propagation path from the beacons should contact John,

Registrations for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend are
now being made at http://illw.net. The event is always held on the 3rd
full weekend in August starting at 0001UTC on Saturday and finishing at
2359UTC on Sunday. There are some interesting video clips on YouTube
that give an idea of the history of the event and what it's like to
operate from a lighthouse.

A new D-Star repeater is operational in Serra do Leiranco, Portugal at
1146 metres above sea level. Using channel RU586 and the callsign CQ0DCH
B, the repeater transmits on 438.575MHz and receives on 430.975MHz. The
internet gateway is not available at the moment. Meanwhile, the D-Star
Search Page created by Tim, WY1U has been copied and placed on the
Internet without his permission. Please go directly to
www.dstarsearch.org for the correct page.

Pembrokeshire RAYNET will be providing communications coverage for the
Tour of Pembrokeshire Cycle Ride on 8 June. Up to 1,000 riders will be
taking part over two routes, one route is 64 miles and the other
116 miles. Control station will be GW3VEN at Folly Farm, using
frequencies of 145.225MHz and 433.7MHz.
Approximately 10 stations will be participating.

Two new repeaters are on the air from Donegal, Ireland. The 2m repeater,
EI2IPG is working on 145.7125/145.1125MHz with 67Hz CTCSS or 1750Hz tone
for access. The 10m repeater, EI-IPG, is on 29.680/29.580MHz with 67Hz
CTCSS for access. Both repeaters are connected via the EchoLink system.

On 1 June, the Spalding and District ARS rally will be held at Sir John
Gleed Technology School, Halmer Gardens, Spalding, Lincs, PE11 2EF.
There is free car parking and doors open at 10am.

Another rally on 1 June is the Red Rose QRP Festival, Formby Hall, Alder
Street, Atherton, M46 9EY. There is free car parking and admission is
£1.50 with the doors opening at 11am.

Now for the news of special events
On 1 June there are a number of special event stations active. Look out
for, GB2ASS, Air Support Signals, from near Chippenham; GB2GED at
Croyden, GB2MOP, Museum of Power, in Ceredigion and GB4LRG, Long Range
Group, near Chippenham.
Two special event stations will be on the air from the Yorkshire Air
Museum in Halifax, GB4FFR and GB8FFR also on 1 June. This is to
celebrate the Reconciliation Weekend between the Doncaster Airgunners
Association and the German Nightfighters Association. QSL via the RSGB
or RAFARS bureau or direct to G3JDY with an SAE for the return card.
On 3 June, listen out for GB1WKS, West Kent Society, from Tunbridge
Wells and GB5OLA, Five Oscar Loughborugh Amateurs, from Loughborough.
On 7 June there are also a number of stations active. GB0CFN, Candy Farm
Naturally, near Doncaster, GB0NOP, Nil Obstare Potest, from Cambridge
and GB0SRG, Saint Robert Gargrave, from Gargrave, North Yorkshire.
For the European Soccer Championship, a variety of special event
callsigns will be on the air until 30 June.

Special event station TM6ACO will be activated (for the 57th year) on
all bands SSB and CW on 1 to 15 June for the 24 hours of Le Mans. QSL

Horndean and District Amateur Radio Club are operating GB50RMM until 15
June. They plan to use HF(SSB and CW) and FM Voice Satellite where

JA1XGI has announced he will operate from East Kribati as T32XG from 27
May until 3 June. He plans to use CW, SSB and some digital modes on 40
to 15 meters. QSL his operation to his home call, either direct or via

Operators Takashi, JE3NJZ and Aruga, JA0KNM will be active as
homecall/JA6 from Kuro Island from 6 to 9 June. Activity will be on 6 to
40, CW and SSB. QSL via their home callsigns, direct or by the bureau.
Operators Mario, DL5ME and Guenter, DG3HWO will be active as OH2/DL5ME
from Emsalo Island, Finland, between 5 and 8 June. Activity will be on

Dan, IK2UWA, will be active as TK/IK2UWA from Cavallo Island until 6
June. Activity will be on 10 to 40m on CW and SSB. QSL direct or by the

The South Flanders DX Activity group will commemorate the 64th
anniversary of the D-Day landings between 5 and 9 June. F/ON6JUN/P will
be on the air near to the Pegasus bridge Memorial Museum. They will be
active on all HF bands, especially WARC bands, using CW, SSB, RTTY and

Now the contest news
The RSGB Club Championship Data Contest is due on 2 June from 1900 to
2030 on 3.5MHz. Exchange is RST and serial number.
3 June sees the RSGB 144MHz Activity Contest from 2000 to 2230. All
modes are allowed on the 144MHz band. Exchange is RST, serial number and
Locator.
This year's SEANET Contest takes place on 7 and 8 June. The rules have
been simplified in an attempt to encourage greater participation. Please
see the new rules at www.seanet.cc. Modes are CW, SSB and RTTY on 3.5 to
28MHz. Exchange is RST and serial number.
The RSGB 144MHz backpacker Contest takes place on 8 June from 0930 to
1300. All modes are permitted on the 144MHz band. Exchange is RST,
serial number and Locator.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 19th to the 25th
of May, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS and Martin Harrison, G3USF.
Two small sunspot groups that were visible decayed and disappeared by
the 21st. Both groups had belonged to the old cycle. Solar activity was
very low with no solar flares taking place at all. Solar flux levels
only varied between 68 and 69 units everyday. The average was 69 units.
The 90 day solar flux average remained unchanged at 71 units. X-ray flux
levels remained below the minimum reporting level throughout.
Geomagnetic activity was just unsettled due to a recurring coronal hole.
The most disturbed day was the 21st with an Ap of 13 units. The average
was Ap 9 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from
330 kilometres per second to 630 by the 21st. Particle densities were
low throughout. Bz varied between minus 8 and plus 6 nanoTeslas.
In 1843 an amateur German astronomer named Heinrich Schwabe, using 17
years of his personal sunspot observations, discovered the rise and fall
of yearly sunspot numbers which we now call the sunspot cycle.
The duration of the sunspot cycle is, on average, around 11 years.
However, the length of the cycle does vary. Between 1700 and the
present, the sunspot cycle from one solar minimum to the next solar
minimum
has varied in length from as short as 9 years to as long as 14 years.
However, that of the 23 solar cycles during a three-century span, 21 had
a length of between 10 and 12 years. The method for counting sunspot
numbers over a long period of time is the monthly smoothed sunspot
number. This is calculated over a 13 month period. The monthly smoothed
sunspot number as gradually declined from a sunspot maximum high
of 120.8 in April 2000. Interestingly, the figures for August, September
and October 2007, which are the latest available, were 6.1, 5.9 and 6.1
respectively. Therefore, was September 2007 sunspot minimum. The
best way to find out is to continue listening to GB2RS-stay tuned-and
hopefully we will be one of the first to let you know.
And finally the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is
expected to be looking our way. Solar activity should be very low
throughout. Solar flux levels are expected to be around the 70 mark most
days.
Today and tomorrow the geomagnetic field could be unsettled due to a
small recurring coronal hole. However, for the rest of the week activity
should decline to quiet levels. MUFs during daylight hours at equal
latitudes should be around 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north.
The darkness hour lows are expected to be about 9MHz. Paths this week
to the Middle East should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per
cent success rate of around 21MHz. The optimum working frequency with a
90 per cent success rate should be about 18MHz. The best time to try
this path will be between 0800 and 1800 hours UTC. It is also possible
that this path could be open via double-hop Sporadic-E on 28 and 50MHz
during any
intense openings. Sporadic-E is expected to take place on most days with
openings up to 144MHz taking place occasionally.

Newsreader John, G0NAJ, send his apologies to all 4 metre listeners for
the lack of transmission last Sunday evening. The bulletin was broadcast
but, due to a switching fault, the transmission did not do out
over the air. The fault was rectified so future 4 metre transmissions
from his station should be OK.
