The RSGB AGM takes place on Saturday 19 April from 11am at the Novotel
hotel in Bristol. It will be followed by an EGM. Full details of the
agenda and business for both meetings were circulated to Members
in the April RadCom. Following the AGM there will be a dinner in
celebration of amateur radio. Further details are on the RSGB web site

The RSGB has been asked to announce that this year's Elvaston Castle
rally has been cancelled. Originally planned for 8 June, the organisers
say that there are various issues to blame, including insurance
problems.

Bristol Channel Repeater GB3BC is on curfew. It is being switched off
every night from 11.45pm until 7am until further notice. This is due to
unacceptable levels of night-time repeater abuse. For more information

Friday 18 April is World Amateur Radio Day. This year's theme is Amateur
Radio: A Foundation for Technical Knowledge. World Amateur Radio Day
celebrates the day the International Amateur Radio Union was founded.

On 21 March amateurs in Bosnia-Herzegovina began using their new E7
callsigns. We understand that at present E7+two and E7+three callsigns
have been issued. From 14 April the country's communications regulator
starts accepting applications for single letter calls. These should
start being issued in May. E7 callsigns replace the T9 series following
an ITU decision announced on 8 August last year.

A reminder that there will be an RSGB Train the Trainers session in
Crawley on Saturday 26 April. The course is free of charge to

Wyre Forest Repeater Group D-Star repeater GB7WF is now operational on
new frequencies. The change was implemented to avoid issues with licence
exempt low power devices on the original input frequency. The input is
now 430.7875MHz and the output is 439.7875MHz. The repeater group say
that GB7WF is the first D-Star repeater in the Midlands. Full details of
the repeater, including coverage data and technical information, is on

Further to our report in the 30 March GB2RS we understand that BBC Radio
Wales had a successful visit to the Barry Amateur Radio Society. The
resulting feature on amateur radio will be broadcast on BBC Radio
Wales on Saturday 3 May 2008 at 1pm, and repeated on Sunday 4 May at
4.30pm. It will also be available for 7 days to download as a podcast on
the BBC Website.

Eddie Murphy, G0VVT, has provided sterling service for many years. He
requests that no further SAEs are sent to him. A replacement QSL Manager

A 6-metre DXpedition to Sable Island is scheduled to take place from 25
June until 7 July. VE3IKV, K5AND and W3CMP will be active there as CY0X
using CW SSB. Operation will also occur on 20m and 40m, but at a lower

Alfio, IT9EJW/p, and Giovanni, IT9GAC/p, will be QRV on 13 or 20 April,
weather depending, from Faraglioni dei Ciclopi (EU-025). QSLs via

Maarten, DU9/PA3GZU, will operate from Mindanao Island, OC-130, from 12

Now the contest news
Tuesday 15 April is the RSGB 1.3 and 2.3GHz activity evening On 16 April
the RSGB 80m Club Championship takes place from 1900 until 2030, on SSB.
The exchange is RS and serial number.
Sunday 19 April sees the EU Sprint contest on SSB from 1600 until 1959,
on the 80, 40 and 20 metre bands. The exchange is your callsign, the
other station's callsign, serial number plus your name or nickname.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 31 March to 6
April, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS and Martin Harrison, G3USF
The three sunspot regions that were visible were magnetically simple and
decayed slowly day by day. The solar disc became spotless on the 4th.
Solar activity was low on the 3rd when two small C class solar flares
occurred. The remaining days saw activity at very low levels. Solar flux
levels decline from 79 units on the 31st to 69 by the 6th. The average
was 76 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 6th was 72 units,
that’s one unit down on last week. X-ray flux levels declined from A 3.3
units on the 31st to below the minimum recording level on the 5th and
the average was A1.9 units. A large coronal mass ejection took place on
the 5th. It took place on the far side of the Sun and was not directed
towards Earth. The SOHO spacecraft provided some excellent images of the
event. Geomagnetic activity started at quiet levels, the Ap index on the
2nd was only 1 unit. Activity increased in the second half of the 4th
and continued till the end of the period. The most disturbed day was the
5th with an Ap of 21. The average was Ap 9 units. The ACE spacecraft saw
solar wind speeds increase from 310 kilometres per second to 760 by the
5th. Particle densities were low except for the 4th which increased to
15 particles per cubic centimetre. Bz varied between minus 2 and plus 3
nanoTeslas on the quiet days and between minus 14 and plus 10 nanoTeslas
during the disturbance.
For much of the week, HF conditions showed a small improvement when
paths to southern Africa and South America were in particularly good
shape for substantial periods. There were strong east-west openings on
14MHz. F2 daytime critical frequencies increased to 6.3MHz on the 4th
and averaged 5.8MHz. The darkness hour lows averaged 2.5MHz. The
disturbance brought VHF aurora – but only at very high latitudes on the
4th.
And finally the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is
expected to be looking our way. Next weekend may see the return of the
sunspot groups that were visible at the end of last month. Solar flux
levels are expected to be around the 70 mark but could increase at the
end of the week to around 80 units. We should see a quiet week this week
geomagnetically speaking. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes
should be about 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. The
darkness hour lows should be about 9MHz. Paths this week to Australia
should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate
of around 20MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent
success rate will about 16MHz, the best time to try this path will be
between 0900 and 1300 hours UTC.
