The IARU Region 1 website reports that Radio China is to stop
broadcasting on five frequencies in the 7.1 to 7.2MHz range. The Chinese
authorities have made frequency adjustments midway during the A09
broadcasting schedule and it affects all transmissions that were
previously operating in the new exclusive worldwide amateur radio
service band of 7.1-7.2MHz.
The formal announcement of the RSGB Board and Regional Council elections
2009 can be found on the RSGB Members only website. The deadline for
returning paperwork is 30 October.
Over the weekend 5 and 6 September, Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire
will be marking the 70th anniversary of the arrival of Alan Turing and
Gordon Welchman at Bletchley Park with an Enigma Weekend. Their usual
Enigma exhibits will multiply when over 70 more previously top-secret
machines from all around the world will be on display. Another highlight
will be a talk on Saturday 5 September by Prof. Tom Perera, W1YP,
entitled The U-Boat Menace and the Enigma. He will have an exhibit of
his discs and various Enigma machines too. Bletchley Park is open from
10.30am each day and entry costs £10 per adult, which entitles you to
visit as many times as you like for 12 months.
The G5RP Trophy is an annual award to encourage newcomers to HF DXing.
However, the award is not limited to youngsters or the newly-licensed:
the HF DX bug can bite at any age or after many years of experience on
other bands. If you are an established HF DXer and want to recommend
someone to be awarded the G5RP Trophy for 2009, now is the time to send
in your nomination. Your nominee should be an up-and-coming HF DXer who
has made rapid progress between July 2008 and June 2009 and has some
real achievements to show, for example, a good total of new countries
worked or some serious HF DXpedition activity. This prestigious award
will be presented this year at the RSGB Convention on 9 to 11 October.

Another African pirate net is active on 14.0021MHz, daily at 1800UTC or
later. The IARU Region 1 ask that amateurs observe and report to DK2OM,
the Coordinator IARUMS Region 1. Check out the IARU Region 1 website for

GB7NL is now operational as a 70cm D-Star Repeater located at the Norman
Lockyer Observatory. The receive frequency is 439.4626MHz and the
transmit frequency is 430.4625MHz. It is sited at locator IO80JQ, which
is at 200m ASL and provides coverage across East Devon, mid Devon, west
Dorset, much of south Devon and into the Channel Islands.
To try to promote 70cm activity and see if it is worthwhile to run a
70cm Counties Contest, the Irish Radio Transmitters Society will be
having a 70cm activity hour following the 2m contest today, 30 August.
Both FM and SSB stations will be welcome and both Calling channels will
be monitored.432.2 for SSB and 433.5MHz for FM users.
At the Chiltern DX Club AGM, Chairman for the past nine years, John
Butcher, G3LAS stood down. He was presented with a commemorative plaque
to honour of his services to CDXC. The new committee for 2009/2010 was
elected and details can be found on the CDXC website.
CDXC is the UK's largest group of HF, DX and contest-oriented radio
amateurs with a membership of almost 750. It promotes good operating
both in DXing and Contesting and offers financial support to major
DXpeditions.
Today, 30 August, Cray Valley Radio Society plan to operate from
Shooter's Hill which is the highest part of South London. The garden of
the Bull Public House has been made available and the activity is part
of a three day Bank Holiday Festival. Operation will be on 2m and 80, 40
and 20m between 12 noon and 8pm local time using the callsign GB4SH.

On 16 September Southampton Amateur Radio Club is holding a reunion of
past and present members. The club dates back before the World War II
and over the years has gone through some changes. If you are or have

The annual Telford Hamfest place on Sunday, 6 September, at Enginuity,
the hands-on engineering museum, in Coalbrookdale, Telford, Shropshire
TF87DQ. The usual traders will be in attendance. Also lectures by GEO,
the weather satellite group.
Doors open at 10am and there's on site catering and two pubs very close
by, one with a very good restaurant. The museum also has a cafeteria. A
reduced price admission to the Enginuity Museum is available. There's
also much to see and do nearby where iron engineering on a large scale
first began, including the first Iron Bridge, the Tar Tunnel, Coalport
china works, Tile museum, Victorian Town, the Museum of Iron and more.

Now for the news of special events
On Tuesday, 1 September, GB1WT will be on the air from 9am at Wickham,
Hampshire, commemorating over 200 years of the Admiralty shutter
telegraph system.
Lincoln Short Wave Club have been given permission to operate a radio
station from inside 'Just Jane', the Lancaster bomber operated by
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire using
the callsign GB2SWW. The station will be put on the air on Saturday 5
September to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the declaration of
World War Two. They will also be using the callsign GB2CWP, the callsign
of the Aviation Centre's Radio Museum. Modern equipment will be used in
the Lancaster for safety and practicality, however, when the aircraft is
taxiing the team will operate GB2CWPs T1154 and R1155 from the museum
shack. Special QSL cards will be available for all stations working
GB2CWP from the aircraft.
HB9VELO will be on the air throughout September to mark the UCI Road
World Championships taking place in Mendrisio, Switzerland. They plan to
use SSB, CW, PSK and RTTY on all bands. The QSL manager is HB9OCR.
Craven Radio Amateur Group will be active from Bancroft Mill Engine in
Barnoldswick, Lancashire today, 30 August, using the callsign GB0BME
from around 0900UTC. They plan to be active on 80 to 10m as well as VHF
and UHF. QSL will be by the bureau or direct and further details about
the station are available on QRZ.COM.
It is hoped that the Orkney Wireless Museum Amateur Radio Station will
be in operation from its premises at Kiln Corner, Kirkwall between
Thursday 3 September and Wednesday 9 September during the 19th Orkney
International Science Festival. Probable operating periods will be
weekdays and Sunday afternoons between 2.30 and 4.30pm and Saturday
morning between 10 am and 12.30pm. Operation will be primarily on HF
SSB.
On 5 and 6 September, Brickfields ARS will be operating a special event
station from the grounds of Wolverton Manor on the Isle of Wight under
the callsign GB4AC. The club will be QRV mainly on 80m and 40m HF and
also 2m VHF FM. QSL cards will be sent to all stations worked via the
bureau or may be requested directly via the club callsign G0BAR
enclosing a SAE and the cost of the return postage.
GB4ASC will be on the air for the Festival of Arts and Crafts at All
Saints Church Creeksea over the Bank Holiday Weekend, 29 to 31 August
between 10am and 5pm each day. The station is located at JO01jp and they
will be active on most HF bands using SSB, PSK31 and RTTY. The callsign
will also be active until 22 September for the Churches and Chapels on
the Air event.

reference EU 002, until 12 September. They will be working a mix of SSb,

Now the contest news
Today, 30 August, the IRTS 2m Counties Contest is on between 1300 and
1500. From the UK you shouldn't need to make many QSOs to win the
Outside EI category, although if there's a GI active he'll probably get
top spot. The exchange is signal report, serial number and EI and GI
also give county.
On HF, the ever-popular RSGB HF event SSB Field Day on 5 and 6
September. Region 1 HF Field Day coincides, which means there will be
numerous Continental European portables active as well. If you want to
give some points away from home, it's a quick-fire exchange of signal
report and serial number.
On VHF, there's the RSGB 144MHz Trophy Contest on 5 and 6 September.
There are five sections to enter, depending on whether a station is
single- or multi-op, fixed or portable, and 6-hour or 24-hour. In the
24-hour sections some big QSO totals are made by the top stations, even
under flat conditions.
The final three hours of the 144MHz Trophy Contest coincides with the
first three hours of the fifth and final 2m Backpackers Contest of 2009.
This continues for one hour after the 2m Trophy finishes. In that hour,
after the QRM level on the band has subsided, low power portables who
might otherwise get swamped by QRM find it easier to work other low
power portables.
This year, the ARRL is honouring the 140th anniversary of the birth of
the League's first president and cofounder. Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, was
born on 2nd September 1869. The operating event is open to all amateurs,
and the goal is straightforward: Find the stations adding /140 to their
callsigns, and contact as many as possible during the event period from
2 to 9 September. The /140 will be signed by any ARRL member who holds
and ARRL
appointment. There will be a Certificate available for anyone who works
at least 25 of the /140 Celebration stations. More details and deadline

Now the solar factual data for the period from the 17th to the 23rd of
August, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 24th of August.
That's another week when the solar disc was spotless everyday. In total
that's 44 days since the last sunspot group was visible. This is the
seventh longest period on record with no spots visible on consecutive
days. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels remained in the
high 60's everyday and averaged 67 units. The 90 day solar flux on the
23rd was 67 units. That's one unit down on last week and is the lowest
level so far for this minimum. X-ray flux levels remained below the
minimum reporting level throughout. Geomagnetic activity started at
quiet levels but on the 19th, slightly later than forecast a coronal
hole disturbance arrived and lasted for two days. The Ap index was 10
and 11 units on the 19th and the 20 respectively. The average was Ap 6
units. Solar wind data measured at the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind
speeds increase from 270 kilometres per second to 590 by the 20th.
Particle densities increased to 20 particles per cubic centimetre on the
19th. Bz varied between minus 4 and plus 5 nanoTeslas on the quiet days
and between minus 10 and plus 8 nanoTeslas on the 19th. Even though this
was quite a mild disturbance VHF aurora was reported on the afternoon of
the 19th and the evening of the 21st, reaching northern Scotland at
times.
And finally the solar forecast. This week looks set to continue like the
last few with the solar disc void of any sunspots. However, when spots
do appear again it will be with very little notice and almost impossible
to predict. Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels. Solar
flux levels should be in the mid to high 60's. Geomagnetic activity in
general should be at quiet level, however, around midweek a small
coronal hole disturbance could take place but its impact should be
minimal. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around
18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are
expected to be around 10MHz. Paths this week to the east coast of North
America should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent
success rate of about 19MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per
cent success rate will be around 15MHz. The best time to try this path
will be between 1400 and 2100 hours UTC. Isolated sporadic-E openings
should take place during the coming week.
