Call it what you like, it still interferes with the radio spectrum, so
proclaims the August issue of the EMC Journal talking about PLT, PLC and
BPL. You can read this issue via a free download from
www.nutwooduk.co.uk. It only takes a few minutes to register and there
is a wealth of information on the subject of potential interference
caused by these systems to read.
AMSAT-UK has announced a new amateur satellite project called FUNcube.
This is an educational single cubesat project with the goal of educating
young people about radio, space, physics and electronics. The project
has received major initial funding from the Radio Communications
Foundation made possible through the generous bequest from a silent key
who wanted the hobby that he loved brought to the attention of others.
FUNcube will support the educational science, technology, engineering
and math curricula and, at the same time, provide an additional resource
for the Radio Society of Great Britain's GB4FUN Mobile Communications
Centre. The target audience consists of primary and secondary school
pupils and FUNcube will have a high power 145MHz telemetry beacon that
will provide a strong signal for the pupils to easily receive. It will
also carry a UHF to VHF linear transponder that will have up to 1 watt
and which can be used by radio amateurs worldwide for SSB and CW
communications.
If you remember the exciting pictures in July RadCom from the Dayton
show of the $53,000 Luso Tower, you will be interested to hear that Luso
have announced that they are going to attend The National Hamfest on 2
and 3 October. This is the first time that Luso Towers will be
displaying in the UK and they intend to bring one of their monster
towers with them to demonstrate the mechanics involved. Other companies
now booked for the National Hamfest are Linear Amp UK, Peak Electronic
Design and PW Publishing. Rob Mannion, Editor of Practical Wireless,
will be there to meet readers and discuss all aspects of amateur radio.

This year's Perseid meteor shower could be even better than usual.
According to NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, a filament of comet
dust has drifted across Earth's path and when Earth passes through it,
sometime between 0800 and 0900UTC on 12 August, the Perseid meteor rate
could surge to twice its normal value. Check http://spaceweather.com for
details and observing tips.
The provisional programme for the RSGB Convention is now available on
the RSGB website and it is packed with highlights. Visitors are still
able to book packages on the RSGB Convention early bird booking
discounts until Friday the 14 August. Savings of £5 per person per night
are available, along with daily or weekend tickets for day visitors and
there are even discounts available for groups of five tickets.
Stuart Tyler, G4UDZ has been the QSL sub manager for the G4X sub group
since 1984 and has recently announced his intention to retire. He
calculates that, in his time as a volunteer, he has personally shipped
over 250,000 cards. The RSGB wishes to acknowledge his efforts as a
volunteer and on behalf of his fellow amateurs to thank him for his
dedicated service. Envelopes and uncollected cards have been transferred
to the new sub manager, John Fogden, G4WSX, who will act for both G4W
and G4X sub groups - see the RSGB members website for details. Members
are asked to pass on this information to any G4 X callsigns that they
may know. All amateurs should note that sub managers are only obliged to
retain uncollected QSL cards for a period of 3 months where no SAEs are
available.
Entries in the 2009 International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend have
reached 346. The UK as a whole has the most stations registers, some 52
in total to date. Australia has 46 stations registered, Germany 42 and
the USA 37. Some exotic places are taking part too. The International
Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend, which this year begins on 15 August, is
fast becoming one of the most popular international events in the
amateur radio calendar. More information is online at www.illw.net.
And now for the details of rallies and events for the coming week
In response to many requests there will be an hour-long talk and
demonstration of amateur microwave moon bounce and the Deep Space
Network during the afternoon of the Flight Refuelling Hamfest today, on
9 August, at 1300. FRARS EME Group members will be in attendance and
able to answer questions on equipment requirements and the techniques
needed to operate on the bands 1.3-24GHz. In addition, Paul, M0EYT will
demonstrate his 8.4GHz Deep Space Network reception using a homebuilt
receiver and tracking 3.4m parabolic dish. FRARS Hamfest is held at the
Cobham Sports and Social Club, Merley, Wimborne Minster in Dorset.

Now for the news of special events
Norfolk County RAYNET will be operational on Sunday 9 August with a
Special Event Station, GB4NCR, from Walcott in Norfolk. Operations will
be on 2m and 80m SSB with a primary frequency of 3.663MHz. Note that 40
will be used if 80m isn't open. QSL cards are available and can be send
either via the Bureau or direct to G4PSH with a stamped self-addressed
envelope. During this event, Exercise Sea Spray will take place in
cooperation with the local community and Flood Wardens for this area.
Several stations have got in touch with their details for the
International lighthouse and Lightship weekend on 15 and 16 August.
GB2ELH will be on air from Eshaness Lighthouse in the Shetland Islands,
QSL via bureau or MM5PSL. TM0LHG will be active from the Gravelines
Lighthouse at Petit Fort Philippe, QSL direct or via the VERON bureau as
they ask that nothing is sent via the French Bureau. GB0MOG will be on
the air from the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse in Scotland. GB5HOD will be
operated from the Hodbarrow Sea Wall Lighthouse and GB2SCA will be
operated by the Scarborough Special Events Group from Scarborough
Lighthouse, QSL via the Bureau, or direct to club call G0OOO. Swansea
ARS will be operating on the Helwick lightship at Swansea Marina, for

Members of Sands Amateur Radio Contest Group will be operating a number
of stations on 15 August to celebrate Galloways Society for the Blind.
The 25th Anniversary Cross Bay Walk will be led by Queens Guide Cedric
Robinson MBE. The walk generally takes around three hours and needs The
Queens Guide to navigate between Arnside and Kents Bank safely because
of the quicksands around the bay that have taken many lives over the
years. The callsigns to listen out for are GB2GSB, located at Arnside
Knott, M0SCG/M which will be operating from the tractor which follows
the walkers and GB4GSB, located at the end of the walk at Kents Bank. A
special certificate is on offer for amateurs and SWLs who work any of
the stations, more details at QRZ.com
And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources.
LA1BN and LA1LO will be operational on 50.155MHz from grid square JO39
in the Norwegian mountains from 10 to 15 August. You should QSL as
directed by the operators.
PD55EA will be on the air until 28 August. They will be active on 10, 20
and 40m using SSB and digital modes. There may also be activity on 2m.
QSLs will be sent automatically via the bureau. If you want to QSL in
other ways, please send QSL your via PD7BZ.
From August 11 to 29, F2VX and FYFYD, will sign 4J/HC from Azerbaijan
using mainly HF SSB. QSL via HC, direct with an sae plus postage or via
the French Ref-Bureau. Please do not use any other bureau.
T6AD will be on the air using mainly CW during his free time from
Afghanistan until 22 August. QSL via K2AU.
To celebrate the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, five stations will be
active until 23 August. Listen out for AM5FUV, AO5FUV, AN5FUV, EG5FUV
and EH5FUV. They will be active mainly on the HF bands. A special award
is available to those who will make at least three QSOs with three

OY/SP6IXF and OY/SP7VC will operate from the Faroe Islands from 10 to 16
August, all bands. SP7VC/MM will operate maritime mobile on the ferry
from Denmark, via the Shetlands to the Faroe Islands. QSL to their home
calls, direct or bureau.
Now the contest news
There are three contests to watch out for over the next week and we also
bring you advance notice for a UHF event.
On 11 August the 432MHz UK Activity Contest takes place between 1900 and
2130. Using all modes in the 432MHz band, the exchange is signal report,
serial number and locator.
The 80m Club Sprint takes place on 13 August from 1900 to 2030. Using CW
on the 3.5MHz band, the exchange is serial number and name.
The 70MHz Trophy Contest is on 16 August from 0900 to 1500. Using all
modes in the band, the exchange is signal report, serial number, locator
and postcode.
Advance notice now for 18 August when the UHF Activity Contest takes
place using the 1.3 and 2.3GHz bands. All modes are allowed and the
exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.
Now the solar factual data for the period from the 27th July to the 2nd
of August, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 3rd of August.
The solar disc was spotless for the third consecutive week. The last
sunspot that was visible was on the 10th of July. Solar activity was
very low with no solar flares taking place. Solar flux levels averaged
68 units with very little daily variation. The 90 day solar flux average
on the 2nd was 69 units, that's the same level as last week. X-ray flux
levels remained below the minimum reporting level everyday. Geomagnetic
activity was quiet everyday. The average was Ap 4 units. Solar wind data
provided by the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds vary between 330
and 430 kilometres per second. Particle densities were low except for a
rise to 25 particles per cubic centimetre during the evening of the 2nd.
With the quiet geomagnetic field the Bz varied no more than minus and
plus 7 nanoTeslas for the period.
And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to
continue at very low levels. At present there is no sign of any
prolonged increase in solar activity. At best all we may see over the
coming weeks are small sunspot groups which will have very little effect
on propagation. Solar flux levels should be around the 70 mark all week.
Geomagnetic activity could be at unsettled levels today and tomorrow due
to a small coronal hole but then for the remainder of the week quiet
levels are expected. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes
should be around 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. Paths this
week to India should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent
success rate of about 22MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per
cent success rate will be around 18MHz. The best time to try this path
will be between 0800 and 1400 hours UTC. Sporadic-E could take place on
some days during the coming week.

Earlier this year the idea to re-start the Mid Somerset Amateur Radio
Club was mooted. Following successful informal meetings once a month,
