The news headlines
" An invitation to join a 6m net

There is now a 6m net running in East Anglia. It is run by the M0CVO in
Norwich and is every Friday evening from 7.30pm. The frequency is
51.510MHz and mode of operation is FM. This has now been operational
since 17 April and is proving popular with local amateurs. All are
welcome to join, in fact, current users say the more the merrier. You do
not need to be a member of any club to join in.

This year, on Marconi Day, a Marconi official station using Marconi
equipment completed a radio contact that was similar to those Marconi
himself achieved many years ago. During the late hours of Friday 24
April and the early hours of Saturday 25 April, GB4FPR was operated from
the Fort Perch Rock Marine Radio Museum in the Wirral. Using a newly
obtained 501kHz to 504kHz NOV licence, they managed a transatlantic QSO
on 502kHz with a station in St. John's, Newfoundland. The operators used
Marconi marine equipment and Morse and received a 539 report from
V01MRC. It was a crossband QSO with GB4FPR transmitting
1 watt ERP on 502kHz and receiving the Canadian station on 3566kHz.
Fort Perch Rock was built as a coastal defence battery during the
Napoleonic period to protect the Port of Liverpool. It is open all year
round and features museums, exhibitions and a tea-room.

Following the publication of an unsatisfactory answer to the original
e-petition submitted to the Number 10 website and the increasing
proliferation of home networking power line adapters, pressure group
UKQRM has now started a second e-petition calling on the relevant
authorities to remove these devices not conforming to the
Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulation 2006. Users of the HF spectrum
are urged to sign this petition which can be found at
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/SaveShortwave2. The Society supports
the work of this group while continuing to negotiate with Ofcom in its
own right.

In a message from Geoff Dover, G4AFJ, the Leicester Amateur Radio Show
committee has announced that the Leicester Show will be held at
Donington one last time. Due to the planned demolition of the exhibition
building, the date has had to be brought forward to 4 and 5 September.
The Donington management have assured the organisers that there will be
no major race meeting that weekend so there shouldn't be any repeat of
the traffic problems that affected some earlier years. More information

The Dambusters Radio Rally takes place today, 3 May, at the Thorpe Camp
Visitor Centre, on the B1192 Thorpe Road, Tattershal Thorpe near
Coningsby, Lincolnshire LN4 4PE. As usual, there is no charge for
selling pitches and entry is £2 per person including traders and their
companions. Children under 16 have free entry. The entrance fee includes
admission to the Visitor Centre. Bring your own tables and covers and
the electricity supply is only limited by the length of your extension
cable. You can come and set up the day before if you give the organisers
notice. There is free camping space available on site. Contact 01507

The Dartmoor Radio Rally will be held on 4 May at the Tavistock College,
Crowndale Rd, Tavistock, Devon PL19 8DD. Doors open at 10.15 for
disabled visitors and 10.30 for others. There will be trade stands, a
Bring and Buy as well as catering and some family entertainments.

Now for the news of special events
The Leicestershire DX Radio Club is holding the second day of an HF and
2m field day weekend today, 3 May, at Manor Farm, Tilton on the Hill.
They will be using the callsign GB0FDX. Everyone is welcome and details
are on the website www.leicesterdx.co.uk.
For the second year running, Cray Valley Radio Society will be
activating GB6MW from Meopham Windmill, Meopham, Kent DA13 0QA, as part
of National Mills weekend on 9 and 10 May. The mill is set in an idyllic
location next to the village green with its cricket, pubs and
restaurants making it a prime location to showcase amateur radio to the
visiting public. GB6MW will be active on HF and VHF and is hoping to
better the 404 QSOs made in 2008 while still ensuring plenty of members
are on hand to explain amateur radio to visitors as they pass by the
station to view the spectacular interior of the mill and its exhibits.
Other stations taking part in National Mills on the Air weekend are
GB0ETM from Eling Tide Mill in Totton, Hampsire and GB2WBM from West
Blatchington Mill. In Essex, look out for GB2RWM at Rayleigh Windmill
and GB5SM from Stock Mill near Ingatestone. East Susses sees G0WMH on
the air from Windmill Hill in Hailsham and GB2GG will be on the air from
George Green in Sneiton.
The Isle of Man Amateur Radio Society has been asked to operate an
amateur radio station during five RNLI Lifeboat Open days. The first
event, from Douglas, will take place on Sunday 10 May. GB5LB will be on
the air on 80m (centred around 3.7MHz). A special QSL card is available
to those contacting the station. Any amateur station contacting all five
RNLI Isle of Man stations is eligible to receive a special RNLI
Certificate confirming the achievement. Full details can be found at

As 2009 is the Centenary Year of Naval Aviation, there are a number of
events throughout the year to celebrate and commemorate this event. The
Royal Naval Amateur Radio Society is to operate a special event station
during May. GB100FAA will be operated by members of the Society,
initially from HMS Collingwood at Fareham and latterly at the Royal
Naval Air Station at Yeovilton, Somerset. More information about the

Karol, G0UNU, will active as ZD8KR from Ascension Island from 4 to 11
May. QSL via his home callsign.
DU1UGZ will be in Dhaka, Bangladesh until around 20 June. Operating as
S21UGZ, he will be using SSB and RTTY mainly on 80 and 40 meters with
some activity on the other HF bands including 12 and 17 metres. QSL as
he directs on the air.
MS0TJT/P will be operational from Coll Island in the Inner Hebrides from
3 to 8 May. The IOTA reference for the island is EU-008. QSL via GM4ZNC
direct or via the bureau.
Nao, JK1FNL/VK4, will be QRV from Hamilton Island, which is part of the
Queensland State north Group from 5 to 9 May. The IOTA reference for
this location is OC-160. QSL via his home callsign.
Darouf, CN8VO will be active as 5F1ROM until 10 May for the FIA Touring
Car Grand Prix that was held in Marrakech. QSL via EA7FTR.
Look for Juergen, DL1IAI/P to be active from Borkum Island, which is
IOTA reference EU-047, until 18 May. He also plans to operate from
DL0BRF, the club station on a light vessel during the same trip. QSL via
bureau.

Now the contest news
Bank Holiday Monday, 4 May, sees the RSGB SSB 80m Club Championship from
1900 to 2030. The exchange is signal report and serial number.
The following day, 5 May, is the RSGB 144MHz UK Activity Contest and
Club Championship from 1900 to 2130. Using all modes, the exchange is
signal report, serial number and locator.
Over the weekend 9 and 10 May, look out for two contests. From 1200 to
1159 it is the CQ-M International Contest. Using CW and SSB on the 1.8
to 28MHz bands, the exchange is signal report and serial number. For
data mode followers, the Volta WW RTTY Contest is also from 1200 to 1159
on the 3.5 to 28MHz bands. The exchange is signal report, serial number
and CQ Zone, which in the case of G stations is 14.
On 12 May, the RSGB 432MHz UK Activity Contest takes place between 1900
and 2130. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number
and locator.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 20th to the 26th
of April, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on 27th April.
First a comparison of the first three months of 2009 compared to the
fist three of 2008. In 2008 there were 34 days when sunspots were
visible compared to only 14 in 2009. The daily solar flux average for
the same period in 2008 averaged 72.1 units, while 2009, the average is
69.6. Only one C class solar flare as took place so far this year
compared to 3 last year. Interestingly, this month the present sunspot
cycle will have lasted 13 years making it the second longest cycle since
records began in the year 1755. The longest cycle started in October
1784 and finished in May 1798 and lasted 13 years 7 months.
Now for this weeks report. The solar disc was spotless everyday except
for the 21st when the smallest of spots appeared and only lasted for
that day. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels declined from
71 units to 69 and averaged 70 units. The 90 day solar flux average on
the 26th was unchanged at 70 units. X-ray flux levels remained below the
minimum reporting level. One interesting point, was the visually
spectacular coronal mass ejection caught by the SOHO spacecraft that
took place on the 23rd. The probable cause was an erupting prominence
and was not Earth-directed. Geomagnetic activity averaged 4 units and
was quiet everyday. Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar
wind speeds vary between 340 and 470 kilometres per second. Particle
densities were low throughout. Bz varied no more than minus 4 and plus 6
nanoTeslas for the period.
And finally the solar forecast. The solar disc is expected to be
spotless on most days. Solar activity should be at very low levels.
Solar flux levels are expected to be around the 70 mark all week.
Geomagnetic activity should be at quiet levels at first but around
midweek a small coronal hole disturbance is expected. However, by next
weekend the field should be quiet again. MUFs during daylight hours at
equal latitudes should be about 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the
north. The darkness hour lows should be around 9MHz. Paths this week to
India should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success
rate of around 22MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent
success rate will be about 18MHz. The best time to try this path will be
between 0800 and 1500 hours UTC.
