The RSGB AGM 2009 is to be held in Newcastle upon Tyne at the Hotel
Novotel Newcastle Airport on 18 April. Proceedings start with
registration from 11am and the formal part of the AGM at 12 noon. For
the first time, it is planned to live webcast the RSGB AGM over the
internet via the BATC Streamer website. For those unable to travel to
the venue, you will be able to watch the proceedings via the live
streams by going to the BATC website, clicking on Live Events and
choosing the correct stream. Check out www.batc.org.uk.

Sheffield Amateur Radio Club has arranged a full day demonstration of
amateur radio at two Sheffield Schools as part of Science & Technology
Week. The club will visit two local schools on 11 March where members
will be demonstrating amateur radio at HF, VHF and UHF. Where
appropriate to the age of pupils involved, they will demonstrate modes
such as HF SSB, digital communications repeaters and D-Star as well as
computer based modes such as Echolink and IRLP. Students in both schools
will be actively involved as much as possible, for example exchanging
greetings messages, listening and logging callsigns heard on amateur
radio receivers, receiving simple Morse tuition and so on. The two
schools will be linked by VHF FM. Schools anywhere in the world are
invited to make skeds with either or both stations. All interested

This years' RSGB Convention (formerly known as the HFC) will as usual
include the traditional lecture streams, HF, DX, Technical and Beginners
but, for the first time, will also include a full stream of VHF
lectures. Ian, G4FSU is co-ordinating the traditional streams, while
Neil, G3RIR and Reg, G8VHI have plans well in hand for what promises to
be a very interesting stream of VHF lectures. The full range of UK exams
will be available over the weekend along with chances to take the US
exams. Mark, M0DXR, who ran the extremely popular Contest University
sessions at last year's event, is currently working on running another
University session this year. Likewise, the FOC guys are planning
another Morse challenge for you to have a go at.
The RSGB Convention takes place at the Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre
in Bedfordshire over the weekend 9 to 11 October. The sponsors of the
RSGB Convention, Icom UK and Martin Lynch & Sons, will both have the
latest range of equipment on display for you to examine and take away. A
detailed programme will be available in due course including details of
the Partners programme for those not so keen on things radio.

GB3WA, the 70cm repeater located near the village of Kilmington in South
Wiltshire, has been permanently taken out of service. The repeater needs
several of its 30 plus year old cavities replacing as well as its PA to
make it a viable repeater operating at full capability again. The site
is still in need of a suitable mast / tower to support both the
antennas, thus replacing the temporary mast, currently on site.
Unfortunately, the funds are just not available and so the groups have
taken the decision to remove the repeater from the air.

Richard Garriott, W5KWQ will be the keynote speaker at the AMSAT TAPR
Banquet during the Dayton Hamvention this year. The Banquet will be on
Friday, 15 May. Richard was aboard the ISS (International Space Station)
in October 2008 and delighted many amateur radio operators and school
children with contacts. He was the sixth private citizen to make the
trip. In addition to the banquet speech, Richard will give a short
presentation at the AMSAT Forum on Saturday morning, and visit the AMSAT
and ARRL booths. If you are attending the Dayton Hamvention this year,

A PowerPoint presentation on the South African amateur radio satellite
due to be launched in the next few weeks is now available. It's a big
document, some 12 megabytes, but interesting with some excellent
photographs. The 80kg satellite includes an AO-51 type VHF up and UHF
down repeater as a secondary payload. Launch may be as early as the end

Bournemouth Radio Society will be holding its 21st annual sale today,
Sunday 8 March, at the Kinson Community Centre, Pelhams Park, Millhams

Today, 8 March, special event callsign GB80RBP gets another airing. The
Radio Society of Harrow will be operating from Bentley Priory in support
of a fundraising event for the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust
and the Battle of Britain Fighter Pilots Association. Listen out for

Today, 8 March, is the final day of operation for GB0ATC after a weekend
of radio work. Number 49F Greenock Squadron of the Air Training Corps
was one of the first squadrons to be formed in Scotland when the ATC was
originated. The cadets would like as many contacts as possible, so
please, if you hear them, call them through the pile up.
GB2RAF will be on the air from the Air Defence Radar Museum RAF at
Neatishead in Norfolk on Saturday 14 March for Science Week.
Foyle & District Amateur Radio Club have been issued the special event
callsign GB5SPD to celebrating Saint Patrick's Day. They will be on air

On March 14, GB5CC will be on the air for the Commonwealth Contest from
Throton Heath near Croydon.
A date for the diary. GB6GEO will be on the air from Torbay during the
Geoparks Communication Weekend on 23 and 24 May, along with other UK
Geopark stations around the world. There will be many other attractions
at the Torbay Kent's Cavern site, such as Cave Radio, Satellite
Communications and Amateur TV. GB6GEO will be a 48 hour working station.
SSB will be used during the day because of visitors to the station and
CW will be used during the night time hours. The Geoparks will be
offering a very special commemorative basic radio amateur certificate

A DXpedition to Mozambique will take place from 9 to 13 April. The QSL
Manager is ON4CJK and either via the bureau or direct. More information
regarding the expedition can be obtained at www.c91fc.be.
W5JON will be QRV as J6/W5JON until 11 March from Marigot Bay, which is
IOTA NA-108. Activity is on 160 to 6m SSB. This will include an entry in
the ARRL SSB DX contest. QSL to home call.
Just a reminder that a team of 9 operators will be activating Chatham
Island as ZL7T until 10 March. The four station setup will operate 160
to 10m, using CW, SSB, RTTY and the PSK modes. The ZL7T website is
available at www.zl7t.com. A logsearch will be available on the team's
return and logs will be uploaded to LoTW within 6 months. QSL via ZL2AL,
by the Bureau or direct using the information on QRZ.com.
Eric, KV1J, will once again be active as FP/KV1J from Miquelon, which is
IOTA NA-032 until 9 March. Activity will be on 80 to 10m, all modes. QSL

Now the contest news
On the international contest scene, the ARRL International SSB contest
finishes today, 8 March. Lots of great activity from the USA and this
one is lots of fun for the beginner and experienced operator alike. On
all bands from 1.8 to 28MHz, SSB, the exchange is signal report and
power.
On VHF/UHF, there's the March 144/432MHz contest that finishes today, 8
March, too. Timings are 1400 to 1400 using all modes and the exchange is
signal report, serial number and locator.
On 10 March it is the RSGB 432MHz UK Activity Contest from 2000 to 2230.
Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and
locator.
On 11 March it is the RSGB 80m club championship, CW leg. From 2000 to
2130, the exchange is signal report and serial number.
The RSGB's Commonwealth Contest takes place on 14 and 15 March. The
event has been really enlivened by the Team Competition in recent years
with plenty of friendly competition between the different Commonwealth
areas. This is very much a DXers contest and doesn't require that you be
active for the whole 24 hours if you don't want to be. You should
however be on at the critical times for the critical openings! This is a
CW contest, of course, but don't be put off, it is hardly fast and
furious. If you want to take some first steps into CW contesting, then
this will be a great way to do so, and work some great DX into the
bargain.
India has announced that it will be entering a team in this year's
Contest. This news means that there will be nine Indian stations and one
from Sri Lanka entering this year as well as teams for Australia, Canada
and the Rest of the World. The contest runs from 1000UTC on 14 March to
1000UTC on 15 March.
The final 70MHz Cumulative Contest of the season takes place on 15 March
from 2000 to 2230. The exchange is signal report, serial number and
locator.
The EA PSK31 Contest takes place on 14 and 15 March on the 10, 15, 20,
40 and 80 metre bands. The exchange is signal report and serial number
for stations outside Spain. Full details appear on the contest website.

Now the solar report for the period from 23 February to 1 March,
compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS, and Martin Harrison, G3USF.
We start this week with the latest smoothed sunspot numbers which are
for May, June and July 2008, which are 3.5, 3.2 and 2.7 respectively.
The trend still remains downward and confirms that sunspot minimum as
not yet been reached. These figures are preliminary and may be subject
to a slight change at a later date. However, we feel the need to release
these figures at the earliest opportunity.
At first the solar disc was spotless but on the 24th a small sunspot
group appeared and lasted till the 26th before it decayed. Solar
activity remained very low. However, while the sunspot group was visible
the solar flux increased by one unit to 71. The average was 70 units.
The 90 day solar flux average on the 1st was 70, that's one unit up on
last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum reporting level.
Geomagnetic activity was quiet, saying that a small disturbance took
place during the 27th; however, the Ap for the day was only 8 units.
This activity was most likely produced by a low-latitude extension of
the southern polar coronal hole. The average was Ap 5 units. Solar wind
data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 380
kilometres per second to 710 by the 27th. Wind speeds then gradually
declined to 400 kilometres per second by the end of the period. Particle
densities were low throughout. Bz varied little on the quiet days and
between minus 6 and plus 10 nanoTeslas on the 27th.
And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to
continue at very low levels. Activity will only increase when a larger
and more magnetically complex sunspot group appears than the recent
groups that we have seen so far this year. There are no signs of any
such group appearing yet but as we know on could appear with very little
warning. Solar flux levels should be around the 70 mark for most of then
week. Geomagnetic activity is expected to start at quiet levels but
around Thursday or Friday a small coronal hole disturbance is due to
arrive. The disturbance should be rather short lived and the peak of the
disturbance will take place shortly after it's arrival. MUFs during
daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz for the south
and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be about 8 or
9MHz. Paths this week to India should have a maximum usable frequency
with a 50 per cent success rate of around 23MHz. the optimum working
frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 18MHz. The best
time to try this path will be between 1000 and 1500 hours UTC.
