Details of the vacancies were published in the September 2008 RadCom. Election papers can be obtained from Michelina Gramson at RSGB HQ. Completed papers must be received at RSGB HQ no later than noon on Wednesday 1 October. ------------------------------- The RSGB Emerging Technology Co-ordination Committee reports that the 70cm repeater GB3EE has been stolen. The repeater was located in Chesterfield, East Midlands. Anyone having information about this theft should contact G6IBQ, email steveg6ibq<at>aol.co.uk. ------------------------------- A RSGB Train the Trainers session, hosted by the Verulam Amateur Radio Club, will take place on Saturday 4 October in St Albans. The Train the Trainers scheme helps tutors enhance the standard of their Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced licence courses. There are still a few places left. Steve and the team will be providing all the tools and test equipment required and will be supervising closely to ensure success. This date celebrates the anniversary of the first steam powered passenger railway. If you would like to take part by running a station, approach your nearest preserved railway, ask if they are celebrating the birth of passenger railways in this country and would they like to have an amateur radio station as part of their event to promote awareness of their railway. Once you have their agreement, apply for a special event licence in the usual way with Ofcom. When you have the details of the station, please register at www.barac.m0php.net. The special event station GB2STI for Steam Trains Ireland will be operating on the Railways on the Air the weekend commencing Saturday 27 September, starting at 10am. They will be operating from the excursion platform of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland, Whitehead, in County Antrim. The operators intend to use 80, 40 and 20m and will also have a 2m multimode station on the air. The station will be operated by members and friends of the Antrim & District Amateur Radio Society as part of the celebrations of the first steam passenger train to operate in the British Isles. A special QSL card is available for all contacts made during the event via GI0KPF, with details on QRZ.COM Visitors are most welcome to visit the railway and see the station in operation. Members of Sands Contest Group and Workington Amateur Radio Society are combining to activate the Isle of Jura, IOTA reference EU-008, from 22 to 29 September using the callsign MS0SCG. They are hoping to be active on all modes and bands as conditions allow. There should also be some SOTA activation during the week. The Irish Radio Transmitting Society has received a grant from the estate of the late Frank Lewis, W3JGM. They have decided to consider spending the proceeds of this legacy in the production of an introductory book on amateur radio, written in a popular non-academic format suitable for an Irish readership. This could be available in libraries and schools. Frank was a great friend to many EI stations, having spent many holidays in Ireland from his home in Maryland. The IRTS feel that this would be a fitting tribute to one who loved amateur radio and Ireland. Gaston Bertels, ON4WF, the chairman of the IARU Region 1 EURCOM working group has published another newsletter. It contains the agenda for the EUROCOM-WG-meeting in Cavtat, Croatia, in conjunction with the IARU Region 1 Conference 2008. The Kempton Radio and Electronics Show will be held on Sunday 28 September at Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury on Thames, TW16 5QA. Also on 21 September, GB90VK will be on the air for the 90th anniversary of the first direct G to VK telegram. On 21 September, GB0WUK for Wavin United Kingdom will be on the air from Durham. GB2QRP will be on the air celebrating low power operating and GB4NGR will be on the air for the Narrow Gauge Railway. On 24 September it is Heritage Day in South Africa. ZS4SRK will be operating from the old block house building and ZS08TV will also be operating from the old meat factory that is now used as the club house for the Vaal Triangle Amateur Radio Branch. The stations will be operating on 20m, 40m and may be on 80m on SSB and also CW. Members of the Turkish Special Wireless Activity Team will activate TC470PDZ between 24 and 30 September. Activity is to celebrate the 470th anniversary the naval victory during the Battle of Preveze. QSL via TA1HZ. On 26 to 28 September, GB2AF is on the air from London. The event celebrates 100 years of radio from 23 Rosendale Road, Dulwich, South London. From 1908 to 1914, a teacher at Dulwich College, Alfred Rickard Taylor, 2AF, lived at that address and transmitted from there. He was a wireless pioneer and early member of RSGB. In 1914 the house was bought by the father of the present owner, Gerry Wells. Gerry developed a passion for radio which has lasted to this day, and the house today is given over entirely to the British Vintage Wireless and Television Museum. See http://bvwm.org.uk. Anyone who is interested in radio will be overwhelmed by the contents of the Museum. It is not open to the public but the collection can be viewed by prior arrangement. On 27 September, VE3MIS will be on the air from the Halton County Radial Railway Museum in Ontario from 1400-2000UTC. They will be using 14.250 and 7.210MHz. They will be operating from the Island Steam Railway at Havenstreet Railway Station on the Isle of Wight and will be active mainly on the 80 and 40 metre HF bands under the callsign GB4HSR. The new RSGB HF 80m Sprint series continues with the SSB leg on the 24th. Try and have a go at this different format, it's fun! The exchange is both callsigns, a serial number and your name or nickname. Over the weekend of 27 and 28 September, the CQWW RTTY contest takes place on 3.5 to 28MHz. The exchange is signal report, and CQ zone, which for England is 14 for example. The 50th Scandinavian Activity Contest, SSB leg, takes place on the 27 to 28 September. Scandinavian stations are always great supporters of RSGB contests, so do take a moment to try and get on and support this contest in a milestone year. ---------------------------------- Now the solar report for the period from the 8th to the 14th of September, compiled by Neil Clarke,G0CAS, and Martin Harrison, G3USF. After 52 consecutive days when the solar disc was spotless, on the 11th, a small sunspot group appeared. This 52 day period is the 4th longest on record in the last 150 years. The sunspot group had disappeared by the following day and the solar disc once again became void of spots for the remainder of the period. Does this sunspot group bring to an end the present sunspot minimum? The answer in a word is NO. There will still be many spotless days to come in the months ahead, but hopefully, for not as long as what we have just witnessed. Just a reminder that so far only two small groups have belonged to the new cycle. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels were 67 units everyday except for the 12th and the 13th which declined to 66 units. The average was 67. The 90 day solar flux average on the 14th was 66 units, that’s the same level as last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum reporting level. Geomagnetic activity was quiet everyday. Even though a coronal hole disturbance arrived on the 14th it was not till late in the day. On the 13th the Ap index was zero. Since the start of 1995 there as been 2,853 days when the Ap index was in single figures, but only 4 days have took place with the Ap at zero. The average was only Ap 4 units. Solar wind speeds measured at the ACE spacecraft saw a decline from 600 kilometres per second on the 8th to 280 by the 14th. Particle densities were low except for an increase to 18 particles per cubic centimetre late on the 14th. Bz varied between minus 3 and plus 4 nanoTeslas. However, very late on the 14 at the start of the disturbance fluctuations of minus 14 and plus 12 nanoTeslas occurred. And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to continue at very low levels with no solar flares taking place. The solar disc should be spotless on most days. Solar flux levels are expected to remain in the mid to high 60’s, where they have been since the 19th of May. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be quiet all week. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be about 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be around 9MHz. Paths this week to Japan should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of about 20MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be around 15MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 0900 and 1200 hours UTC.
