During the HFC 2008 over the weekend of 10 to 12 October you will be
able to join with other operators and listen to a simulated CW pile-up.
Give it a try for fun and see how many callsigns you can copy. The CW
Pile-Up Challenge will be run by members of The First Class CW Operators
Club and all entrants will receive a certificate to confirm their
participation. Successfully copy 5 callsigns and you will be eligible
for the Prize
Draw. Alternatively try the Team Challenge. Three nominated operators
can form a team and have their combined scores listed against other
teams. Will we see a battle of the giants – Voodoo Contesters versus 5

This weekend, the RSGB competitors in the 14th ARDF World Championships
fly out to Korea for the competition. Team Captain is David Williams,
M3WDD who competes in the M40 class which comprises men between the ages
of 40 and 49. The other team member is Robert Vickers G3ORI who runs in
M60.
Five transmitters are hidden in a forest and competitors use a receiver
and directional antenna to locate them. At each transmitter is located
an electronic timing unit and the competitor inserts a memory chip into
this and the identity of the transmitter and the time of arrival of the
competitor is written to the chip.
You can follow the competition through the website www.2008ardf.org/ and
it is anticipated that near real time results will be posted. The 144MHz
races are on Thursday 4th September and the 3.5MHz races on Saturday 6th
and Korea is eight hours ahead of UK time.
Checking the website at breakfast time on the 4th and 6th will enable
you to keep up to date with the results. In case you thought the RSGB
team was disappointingly small, you need to know that the competitors
pay all their own costs to participate.

An RSGB Train the Trainers session, hosted by the Norfolk Amateur Radio
Club, will take place on Saturday 6 September near Norwich. The Train
the Trainers scheme helps tutors enhance the standard of their
Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced licence courses. Alan Betts, G0HIQ
and Brian Reay, G8OSN will be presenting the all day course, which is
free of charge to instructors.

Jim Stirling, GM3UWX, the RSGB Deputy Regional Manager for Region 01,
District 14, has tendered his resignation. Jim has been the Deputy
Manager for Dunbartonshire, Argyll & Bute and the Western Isles, since
the regional system was introduced some eight years ago. In accepting
Jim's resignation, Regional Manager Gordon, GM3ULP, would like to record
his appreciation and thanks, for the commitment Jim has given to the DRM
position.
The new DRM for District 14 is Brian Shearer, MM1HMV. Brian is QTHR in
the RSGB Yearbook and further details will be found on the local RSGB

Bishop Auckland Amateur Radio Club is coordinating the National Railways
on the Air Weekend that will take place on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28
September. This date celebrates the anniversary of the first steam
powered passenger railway. If you would like to take part by running a
station, approach your nearest preserved railway, ask if they are
celebrating the birth of passenger railways in this country and would
they like to have an amateur radio station as part of their event to
promote awareness of their railway. Once you have their agreement, apply
for a special event licence in the usual way with Ofcom. When you have

The British Wireless for the Blind Fund’s annual 48-hour Transmission
fund raising event for radio amateurs kicks off on 20 September with a
brand new category for the under-18s. The competition invites radio
amateurs to make as many sponsored contacts with other amateurs across
the globe as possible. Money raised will help the BWBF, a national
charity, which provides specially adapted radio equipment for blind and
partially sighted people in need.
The BWBF has just launched its latest state-of-the-art radio CD cassette
player Concerto designed to the charity’s specification. The charity is
celebrating its 80th anniversary year and recently relocated to a brand

The International Morse Preservation Society are holding their annual
Straight Key Week in September for CW enthusiasts. They invite both
members and non members to blow the dust off their Straight Keys and
join in the fun. This is a relaxed friendly event where general Ragchews
are encouraged, at whatever speed of sending/receiving the individual is
comfortable with. Newcomers to CW are made especially welcome.

The M6DX Group will be out again on Monday 1 September from Spurn Head
on the East Yorkshire – Humberside coastline. Contacts were very good
when they worked this coastline on one of the trials so they hope that
conditions will be in their favour.

A new radio record is set in the southern hemisphere. ZS2GK and FR5DN
have made the first ever 2 metre VHF contact between Reunion Island and
South Africa via the South Indian Ocean path. The signal strength
was S5 to S6 with no QSB over the VHF path of 2875km. It took place on
the morning of the maximum of the Perseids meteor shower.

Now for the news of special events
Brickfields Amateur Radio Society will be on air on Sunday 31 August
under the callsign GB4WMS operating from the grounds of Wolverton Manor
on the Isle of Wight. This special event station is being run as part of
a large event organised to raise money for the charity Age Concern.
Contact with the station counts towards the Castles & Stately Homes on
the Air or CASHOTA award scheme as well as the Isle of Wight County
Award scheme. Operations will be confined to the HF bands - mainly the
80 and 40 metre bands - and QSL cards will be sent via the bureau or may
be requested directly via the Brickfields Amateur Radio Society
GX0BAR.
To celebrate the opening on 1 September of the museum dedicated to Hard
Rock Mining at the Geevor Tin Mine in the west of Cornwall, GB2TIN will
be on the air today, 31 August.
Today, 31 August, the Orkney Amateur Radio Club will be will be
operating GS8R from Scapa Bay as part of a programme of activities to
commemorate the 850th anniversary of the death of St Rognvald
(pronounced Ronald). In Norway, their sister special event station will
operate from within a few hundred metres of where Rognvald was born.
Following the successful reconnaissance visit in March, the Luton VHF
group will establish a special event station, GB2CI, on Caldey, one of
the Welsh Islands off the coast of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, IO71PP, from
1800UTC on 2 September to 1100UTC on 8 September.
The station is validated for IOTA, WAB and will be validated for WLOTA.
The group will also be taking part in the SSB Field Day and 2m Trophy
contests over the weekend of 6 and 7 September using club callsign
GW3SVJ/P.
The Orkney Museum Amateur Radio Station, GB2OWM, will be in operation
from its premises at Kiln Corner, Kirkwall between Thursday 4 September
and Wednesday 10 September during the 18th Orkney International Science
Festival. Probable operating periods will be weekdays and Sunday
afternoons between 2.30 and 4.30pm and Saturday morning between 10am and
12.30pm. Operation will be primarily on HF SSB.
GB8AP will be operating from 1 September on weekends during that month
to celebrate and publicise Liverpool's status as European Capital of
Culture.
GB1CM, which is to commemorate the first anniversary of the loss of the
rally driver Collin McRae, will be on the air during the month of
September on 80m through to 6m on SSB.
GB4SMH will be on the air on 6 September from the Signals Museum,
Henlow.
And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources
ZS6/DL3PS will be on the air from Johannesburg until 12 September while
on a business trip. He will be active on 80 to 10 meters using CW, SSB
and digital modes in his spare time. QSL to home call.
DK8NT will be on the air from Oleron Island on the French Atlantic Coast

Members of the Granville ARC using the callsign F5KAQ will be active
from Brehat Island in Brittany from 1 to 8 September. Activity will be
on 80 to 10 meters using CW, RTTY, PSK and SSB. They will also be on
144MHz to 10GHz SSB.
DA0HEL will be active from Helgoland Island in the North Sea on 6 to 8
September. They will be taking part in the IARU VHF Contest on 2 metres
CW/SSB. QSL via the DARC Bureau.
J48HW and SV8/HA0HW will be active from Thassos Island, Greece until 10
September. Activity will be on the HF bands (mainly on 40/30/20/17
meters and mainly on CW, with some SSB, RTTY and PSK31 as well), and 6
metres. QSL via his home callsign, by the HA Bureau or direct
K3GV/VY2 will be on the air from Prince Edward Island, Canada between 1
and 22 September. Activity will be on 20 and 15 metres around the usual
IOTA frequencies. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the

Members of Sands Contest Group and Workington Amateur Radio Society are
combining to activate the Isle of Jura, EU-008 from the 22nd to the 29th
of September this year. They are hoping to be active on all modes and
bands as conditions allow. More information as it happens can be found

Now the contest news
Until 1200 today, 31 August, the International Short Wave Championship
of Romania will be taking place using CW and SSB on the 3.5 to 28MHz
bands. The exchange is RST and serial number.
2 September sees the RSGB 144MHz UK Activity Contest and Club Challenge
take place between 1900 and 2130. The exchange is RS and serial number
and locator.
Next weekend sees the RSGB 144MHz trophy between 1400 on 6 September to
1400 on 7 September. It sees huge activity on the 144MHz band throughout
Europe and if there is any sort of enhancement to propagation at all,
you will make contacts much further than normal. The exchange is RS plus
serial number and locator.
The final 144MHz Backpackers event takes place on 7 September between
1100 and 1500. The exchange is RS plus serial number and locator.
On HF, the same weekend sees the SSB Field Day which is also an IARU
co-ordinated event so will see high levels of activity through Europe
and beyond. SSB Field Day was very much introduced to be a club event
and should form a great introduction to SSB contesting for your clubs
newcomers. The time are 1300 on 6 September to 1300 on 7 September. The
exchange is RS and serial number.
Ireland's annual MRG VHF/UHF SSB Challenge takes place on 7 September
between 1400 hrs and 1700UTC. Any EI/GI operator holding an amateur
radio/experimenters licence can participate. Clubs can also participate.
Exchange is RS plus serial number and Maidenhead locator.

Now the solar report for the period from the 18th to the 24th of August,
compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS, and Martin Harrison, G3USF.
As this report is compiled the Sun has been spotless for the last 35
days. In fact, in the last 63 days spots have only been visible on 3
days. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels averaged 67 units
and only varied by one unit. The 90 day solar flux average on the 24th
was 66 units. That’s the same level as last week. X-ray flux levels
remained below the minimum reporting level, just like they have since
the beginning of April. The only activity coming from the Sun at the
moment comes in the form of geomagnetic activity originating from
coronal holes. The last disturbance occurred on the 18th, the Ap index
was 23 units. The
remainder of the period was quiet with the Ap in single figures. The
average was Ap 7 units. Solar wind speeds from the ACE spacecraft
declined from 660 kilometres per second on the 18th to 300 by the 24th.
Particle densities were low, however, a slight increase to 12 particles
per cubic centimetre took place on the 23rd and the 24th. Bz varied
between minus 10 and plus 7 nanoTeslas on the 18th and between minus and
plus 3 nanoTeslas on the quiet days.
During the past week sporadic-E was reported at 28, 50 and 70MHz, and
there is a reasonable chance of further openings during the coming week.
On all three bands beacons are often the best indicators of which
paths are open at times when activity levels are low.
And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to
be very low with the solar disc spotless on some days. Solar flux levels
should be around the mid to high 60’s all week. Geomagnetic activity is
expected to be at quiet levels until Friday when a coronal hole
disturbance is expected to arrive and last for most of the weekend. MUFs
during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be about 18MHz for the
south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be around
9MHz. Paths this week to India should have a maximum usable frequency
with a 50 per cent success rate of around 22MHz. The optimum working
frequency with a 90 per cent success rate should be about 18MHz. The
best time to try this path will be between 0800 and 1600 hours UTC.
