"Vegetable Soup
Ingredients
2 Pints (1.2 Litres) Water or Stock
1 each Carrot, Parsnip, Turnip and Onion
2 sticks Celery
1 large tablespoon Rice or Sago
Salt to taste
Instructions
Cut all vegetables into small pieces and simmer in water or stock until
tender. When about half cooked, add rice; stir well and cook until rice is
soft. Add seasoning ands serve."
From my mother's old New Zealand cookery book (1956 edition), printed by a
maker of baking powder, custard powder, cornflower and jelly crystals.
