The question is not whether Windows adequately protects us from viruses.
The question is why should it be necessary to protect us in the first place.

If Microsoft were to devote as much effort to identifying virus writers as
it currently devotes to creating defensive measures, and if the penalty for
virus writing were severe enough, the virus problem would go away.

Unfortunately as we all know, only a few viruses are written by malicious
people for deviant fun. Most contemporary viruses originate from anti-virus
software companies as a tactic to justify their own existence and steal a
march on their competitors.

Will things change? I doubt it. Too many jobs are at stake in the anti-virus
writing industry, and the stupidly tolerant west adopts a laissez-faire
attitude and accepts the risks for the sake of those jobs.
