Well I thought that changing BBSs had cured the unusual problem I had here
with Winpack but it was not to be. With the new BBS I still have the same
problem. Just to elucidate:

(1) Winpack works perfectly until the sysop sends a message. Bulletins
from other operators come down all right in their entirety, and I can send
replies with no difficulty.

(2) I can originate and send bulletins and messages with no problem.

(3) PNL messages come and go with no problem.

(4) As soon as the sysop sends a message a problem shows up quite
consistently.
	(a) If it is a short message it downloads with header and route but no
text.
	(b) If it is longer than a few lines the missing text appears in
succeeding bulletins by other operators and their messages are garbled.
	(c) So far as I can tell only the sysop's bulletins cause the problem.

(5) This has been going on with increasing frequency since about June
2008. It has never shown up prior to that.I have used WInpack with no
problems for at least 12 years.

(6) I have had the same computer for about four years and all other
programs and software behave normally. My laptop also has a problem with a
slight variation. Forget the laptop. The difficulty there could be
unrelated.

(7) I have used downloads of the latest version of WInpack - no effect.

(8) Dave VK2AWZ sent me his version of WInpack which I installed making
only the necessary changes for my callsign and password etc. No
difference. Text missing in sysop's messages.Using Dave's details (with
his approval) I could access the BBS with no problem. However in hind
sight I am not sure that this was not a red herring as I can't remember
whether the sysop sent a message at that time. If he did not then my own
callsign and password would probably have worked OK.Forget that one; it
could be a red herring.

(9) I have had many suggestions, none of which made the slightest
difference.

(10) Clearly the BBSs are cleared of blame as it has happened consistently
with two different BBSs on opposite sides of the country.

(11) I noticed with both BBSs I have used recently that some messages
were downloading automatically in their entirety (no missing text) onto
the screen when I booted up. I could read the entire message from the
sysops. I believe that the titles were listed in the selection list
editor, automatic download.. When I downloaded them in the usual way the
text was missing.

Some of the advice sent to me suggested that I am a newcomer to the
mysterious world of packet radio and computers. Forget that fellers
Nothing could be further from the truth.

As far as packet radio is concerned I graduated from Digicom when packet
first started up on a C64 to Paket up to version 6, then to TPK and on to
early Winpack, through to version 6 Winpack.I introduced computers into my
school, teaching word processing to classes of 10 to 12 years olds more
than 20 years ago. My first computer was a Dick Smith kit with 1kB memory.
Forget it! I have been with computers for many years and in amateur radio
for 54 years. I know what I am doing but this one has me completely
bamboozled. Nor have I found anyone who can explain the phenomenon. If you
think I have lost it as was suggested by one person, well you explain
the problem!!!

BTW thank you to those who have helped with advice. Your input was really
appreciated. However the war is not yet over.

Anyone with ideas?
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
