Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info that the BBS Prompt in your copy of Winpack V6.8 is a
chevron > sign only.

I found a note in the Winpack help file BBSPRMT.TXT advising why this is
not a good option to take and that a "bit more text" to go with the
chevron in the BBS PROMPT box will help Winpack work 100% OK (as it does
for me).
Have a look in that text file that comes with Winpack. It has great
suggestions on what will work best.

(The following was added to the FAQ on 2000-Jan-06 as a result
of someone sending a bulletin to WINPAC @ GBR saying that all
you needed in "BBS prompt" was '>'.)

          **************************************************************
Don't be tempted to take the easy option of putting simply:-
          >
It may appear to work, but it will probably cause problems at
some stage. It will certainly cause problems if the sysop
configures the BBS so you see something like this when you
          connect:-

          < Welcome to GB7XXX! >
< A great BBS for testing your WinPack prompt setting. >
If you have only put '>' in "BBS prompt" in WinPack
then the chances are that you'll never get as far
as the real BBS prompt, which is on the next line:-
          (1) GB7XXX BBS>

It will also give you a problem if you don't use the FBB
unproto beacons, and so WinPack has to collect the message
list by connecting to the BBS and listing it. Packet users
will quite often surround the message title with '<' and '>'.
When WinPack lists the messages, it will stop at any line
          ending with '>'.

You have nothing to lose by trying something new after 12 years of use
(even for a week of experimental testing).
I'm still learning things about Winpack & FBB programs as they have so
many features it's hard to know them all. In fact I sometimes have to
re-read the notes as I've forgotten what I need to do if I don't perform
that action often enough.

Maybe someone using VK2TV will say what they get for a BBS prompt line
when they connect. Then we'll be able to make intelligent suggestions on
what might give Winpack a good go at making the decision when a BBS prompt
has arrived & let it positively ignore "stray bits of text resembling a
BBS prompt" & "lone chevrons" in the text of bulletins.
In my own case I use "ZL1AB BBS (H for help) >" (extra space added
between B & BBS to stop local problems reading this bulletin) as that is
what the BBS sends every time it prompts for a command. I'd expect anyone
sending that line of text in a bulletin, without the deliberate extra
space between ZL1AB & BBS I added, would make a problem for anyone reading
it on the ZL1AB BBS using Winpack auto-bbs mode.
