The problem here though is that I have set up and used Winpack for years
with no problems at all. Now suddenly there are problems with both my
computers. I won't go into the symptoms again; they have been well aired
and I have had responses to the request for help.This main computer is
about 1 1/2 to 2 years old. Has plenty of disk space (total of240gB) and 1
gB of RAM. This is some unusual circumstance which I have not found yet.
Cheers,

} I had a similar issue with SallyPMS where a lone > chevron would trigger
a
} disconnection from GB7ESX (an NNA BBS) during an auto-list/read session.
}
} The author of Sally had to include a workaround for me ;)

That explains why NPFPMS (a predecesor of Sally) suggests not to use a
lone > chevron as quote symbol. As you know I use a } curly bracket which
is the default in NPFPMS.
With all these sorts of problems it pays to monitor what is actually being
sent and received. It can save a lot of false leads being followed.
