Not only is Vista not compatible with Winpack but to XP in
certain aspects. I regularly do a full MSBACKUP backup of my running
Winpac, which has always been extremely useful if a new hard disc or
reformat is carried out.
But as below my XP backup is not useable with Vista. Many say
why change to Vista or new 7 when XP does a sterling job.
I have written to APC magazine re this problem Copy below.

Hi I have just purchased March APC and read your comparison of the
3 current operating systems, XP Vista and 7 Beta.
An aspect I would like to point out is about MSBACKUPS (built into
98, XP, Vista). I religiously backup various XP work applications,
using the in built msbackup, which I think is better than other
backups I have tried.
In fact I do a complete computer backup of my 4 XP computers to an
external hard disk. Really great if a hard drive goes down! So after
putting in XP I do a full restore. Followed up with minor restores of
latest email and correspondence saved from a more recent date.
However they did it with 98 to XP, in that the msbackup of 98 was not
compatible with XP. That is why I did not go to Vista, as again it is
not compatible with XP msbackup I am told.
So how could I use all my backups if I went to Vista or 7. It was bad
enough having to reinstall most in XP and then do a flock of fresh
backups.
The same inconsistency applies with latest Word and I with
most others still use Word 2003 with .doc extension. rather than .docx
of latest Word grrrr
One wonders if it is just a marketing ploy to make folk buy the
latest and worst greatest. Also I believe Microsoft should maintain XP
for at least 15 years and make all revisions compatible?
Yes I could install that horrible MS compatibility thing for .DOCX to
doc but, I read the very few .DOCX with OPEN OFFICE 3.
