Have you tried not using the unread button?
That is:
Click on: Read Bulls
Click on: All Bulls
Double click on a message to read it
Click on: Keep or Delete message as required
Click on: Done
Does the progam still crash?
If not that is a way around your problem.
I don't think using Telnet has any bearing on your problem.
I don't have Vista available to test it but
you can also try running Winpac in compatability mode
