You should have the original WinXP CD [1], you could try a 'Repair Install'
using that. It is not something I do often, so I cannot lead you through it,
but it is on the menu of the CD if you boot from it. It fixes many problems
without damaging anything you have on the system, your installed software
works just as before and no files are lost as a result of the repair.

[1] Not all systems are supplied with a standard XP CD, some are only supplied
with a CD which restores it back to how it came from the factory. Others might
have it on a separate partition.

Someone might be able to advise if a borrowed WinXP might do the same 'Repair'
trick.

Another thing I could suggest trying, is System File Check - Click Start, then
Run and in the box type sfc /scannow. It checks all your system files are
valid and any which are corrupted or missing it will try to replace. If it
finds anything it will ask for your WinXP CD.
