 Night Flight To Venus

JAMSAT announces Amateur Satellite to Venus.

JARL/JAMSAT are collaborating with the Japanese University Space Engineering
Consortium (UNISEC) to send an amateur radio payload into a Venus transfer
orbit with the primary JAXA Planet-C Venus Orbiter mission planned for
 May, next year! 2010.

The UNITEC-1 team invites the support of amateur radio amateurs all around
the world to participate in the receiving and data capture experiments.

They note that amateur radio operators working as individuals or in groups
develop stations and techniques to relay their received signal reports and
data to the UNITEC-1 control station. This is also a unique opportunity to
propose amateur experiments or competitions to the satellite team.

UNITEC-1 will transmit a signal consisting of a CW beacon of about 1 bps
speed. One experiment requiring the participation of several amateur radio
earth stations would include the development of infereometric techniques to
combine the received signals from several antennae to improve the received
S/N ratio from the spacecraft out-bound from earth.

The UNITEC-1 website provides the latest mission information (such as orbit
parameters, data formats and current status).

The UNITEC-1 website can be seen at:

ACMA Publishes Revisions to the Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan

On the 2nd January, the "Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan"(ARSP), was
 published on the ACMA website.

The plan now reflects the changes to spectrum allocations flowing from the
last World Radio Conference. Copy of the plan can be found on the WIA website
in the reference area titled Legislation. This is the first step in
authorising access to the new Low Frequency Band for amateurs. However, until
the Amateur Service Licence Conditions Determination is amended, amateurs
cannot use this new LF band. A news release on a commencement date will be
published on the WIA website as further information comes to hand.

Brisbane’s Courier Mail is reporting that parents at Westfield shopping
centres could soon be renting wireless tracking devices for their children,
to make it easier to find them in the crowded malls.

The international shopping giant, has already trialled the technology at its
new 17ha London shopping centre and is considering rolling out the scheme
 worldwide.

Mums n Dads type a security number on their mobile phone which is entered on
 to the shopping centre's database.

If they become separated from their child, the parents can call the security
desk which can instantly tell them the location of the tag and the missing
 child.

The device was developed in Legoland in Denmark in 2004 and is used by theme
 parks across Europe.

 Amber Alert Works in VK

Police say the quick return of a child kidnapped on Queensland's Gold Coast
last weekend shows the child abduction alert system called "Amber" is working.

A seven-year-old boy was taken from a house by a 29-year-old woman just after
lunchtime. A short time later police issued an official Amber alert to the
media, detailing the car they were travelling in and a description of the
 woman and boy.

The pair, who are known to each other, were found about three hours later
 in Brisbane's north.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jeff Cootes says a woman listening to her car radio
called police after hearing details on the radio and actually spotting the
 car whilst she was driving!

The boy was not hurt by the woman, who is currently assisting police with
 their investigations

An on line news site, Earth Times say the autopilot on another Qantas Airbus
A330 suddenly disconnected 500 kilometres after taking off from Perth in
 Western Australia (VK6) last week.

The plane was forced to return to Perth.

The incident, December 27 was the second midair emergency affecting a Qantas
Airbus. Seventy passengers were injured - some of them seriously - in October
when a plane suddenly lost altitude during a flight to Singapore and was
forced to make an emergency landing at Exmouth.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said that because of their
similarities the two incidents will be the subject of a joint investigation,
and plan to release an interim report about mid-February.

For those of us who like a good "conspiracy" story, google UFO, Exmouth,
ET landing areas in Australia! Flying will never be the same! HiHi.

 HAMS ACROSS AUSTRALIA.

 VK0

Bob VK0BP would like to thank all of the VK stations that have made contact
with him down at Davis Station Antarctica. He has had contact with nearly
100 VK stations and 80 odd countries in total on 6 different bands, although
 most on 20m.

Bob would like to pass on a special thanks to Christie VK6XCJ for his time
one very late night – a successful experiment indeed, with contacts on 30m,
 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m and VK0BP being able to hear Christie on 40m and 10m.

Bob has done some similar experiments with a few other stations prior and
since, but not on so many bands, and certainly without that level of success.

For that extra bit of spice, Bob hopes to operate as AX0BP on Australia Day,
which would have to be far rarer than the “usualö vk0 callsign. Do have a
 listen out for him.

For more details on Bob’s time down south check out his website
 www.vk0bp.org

His email details are also there so do feel free to pop him a message.

 Special Feature - Interview

Joining us today in our WIA Melbourne studio is a rather remarkable person,
having only had his foundation license for just over a year Edward Seeto
VK3FEET is a teacher at Sherbrook Community School here in Melbourne.

Good morning Edward, now for our interstate listeners where is Sherbrook
 community school

Sheerboork Community is in the Dandenong ranges which is about an
        hours drive from Melb CBD

Now it’s a community school, how is that different to a regular school?

We cover both primary and secondry so prep to year 12, our teaching
includes a focus on sustainability and natural resources

And what subjects do you teach at the school ?

I teach IT, Multimedia and a language other than English which is
         Manderin.

One of the exciting things that has happened at the school has been the
introduction of Amateur Radio as part of the science program and recreational
activities available for the children at the school, can you tell me how this
 came about?

It started after I obtained my foundation licence a year and a bit
ago and I decided to share with the students at the school the wonder
         of Amateur Radio.

So how many young folk at the school have become involved ?

To date five students and one techer other than myself have obtained
their foundation licence. And there are more studying. Also those of
us who have obtained their foundation licence are now starting to
         study for our standard.

In the Studio with us is Sam, Calum VK3FSDP and Cameron VK3FZAT good morning
guys it’s great to have you on WIA news.

	 Good Morning (Sam)
	 Good Morning (Cameron)
	 Good morning (Callum)

Now which one of you was the first to get their License

	 Sam, then Callum then Cameron.

Are there many others at your school who are involved with the Amateur Radio
program or are working towards getting their licence ?

Yes there are for example one year 11 student who is very keen and
intends to sit for his foundnation.

Now tell me about the radio gear you use ?

Cameron – The school has a new 2 and 70 mobile radio in the shack
plus a bigger HF Radio. At home I have a 2 meter radio plus a 2 and
         70 handheld.

	 Callum - I have the same as Cameron a 2 meter rig plus a 2 and 70
         handheld.

Sam - I have a Yaesu 2m rig in my bedroom and an antenna outside my
         bedroom window.

What sort of Amateur Radio activities do you do hear at the school ?

We get a lot of help from Jim VK3AMN and Bill VK3FBIL we have project
days where we make atennas etc with the help of these guys from the
         local radio club etc.

Edward, how would you like to see the Amateur Radio program further developed
 in the school ?

We would like other schools and radio cubs to be inspired and to
introduce something similar into the school, so that perhaps one day
young folk from schools around Australia can work each other during
lunch breaks or perhaps special Amateur Radio activity days, and
perhaps a Kids day as they have in the USA .

AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS

FISTS Member 2934,K4UK-Stan, the US FISTS QSL Manager reports an unusual
blast from the past in the latest FISTS newsletter.

In a batch of cards that he has just received from the W4-QSL Bureau was one
from W3MCG / VE4. It confirmed his QSO with K4IKF on 21 MC CW in 1958!

That QSO was made during the second weekend of the 1958 CW Sweepstakes.

Back then, Stan’s call was K4IKF. It took almost 50 years for the card to be
delivered to him. Stan said “Amazingly I found my log for the 1958
Sweepstakes Contest and sure enough that contact was in the log.ö

“Now I need to find out if Karl R. Medrow is still alive and kicking and
whether he still has the W3MCG call. And then I'll need to find some of my
old K4IKF cards – How about that for bringing back old memories? – Hi!ö

INTERNATIONAL NEWS With thanks to RSGB, Southgate AR Club, the ARRL,
Amateur Radio Newsline, NZART and the WW sources of the WIA.

This year’s should see Blaupunkt and miRoamer put Internet radio into
car dashboards for the first time.

It is said to be the first seamless Internet radio solution.

With the simple push of a button, users can access AM/FM stations or
Internet radio’s thousands of music, entertainment, news and talk stations
from around the world, all from the same car stereo.ö

The first model will connect to a 3G phone via Bluetooth for Internet
connectivity. When connecting to the Internet from an external device
the customer’s existing service provider is the default network.
Both will provide access to tens of thousands of miRoamer stations
when connected to a smartphone on an unlimited data plan.

Another options available is to post your own playlist files on the Internet,
on a free blog site. Playlist files, as compared to the actual mp3's, don’t
occupy much disk space and since they just link to remote files you could
bookmark those playlists on the Blaupunkt radio to access anything you want
 from the road.

EAGLE CAP EXTREME SLED DOG RACE

Ham radio will be used for the first time to help coordinate the Eagle
Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race. The race takes place from January 14 to 17.

Many remote check points will have hams camping out in the cold at
up to 7000 feet elevation for the entire race.

Short range communications will be linked using KB7DZR's EchoLink node
along with an EchoLink connected repeater in Idaho. This to provide
communications back from the most distant checkpoints. And while
waiting for teams to pass, some may be active on the high frequency
bands from 160 through 10 meters.

More information on the race is on-line

 NEWS FROM SOUTHGATE

Palestinian activists reportedly jam Israel Army Radio - Press TV

A group of Palestinian activists have reportedly jammed Israel Army Radio
signals in southern regions of the occupied Palestinian territories.

Palestinians, who according to Israeli officials took control of the airwaves
from the Gaza Strip, broadcast statements in Arabic, Press TV’s Beirut
 bureau reported.

Jaffa-based Israel Army Radio, commonly known as Galatz among Israelis, is
operated nationwide by Israel Defence Force and is mainly funded by the
 Israeli Ministry of Defence.

Palestinian resistance groups had earlier disrupted the signals of two other
Israeli radio stations and managed to air programmes targeting audiences in
 south Israel.

 VHF CONTEST NEWS

 Ross Hull Contest

The Ross Hull Contest began on Thursday, 1 January and continues throughout
the month. The rules have undergone major changes and scoring now follows
a similar pattern to the VHF-UHF Field Days.

The contest includes two main sections. One is for all traditional modes
including CW and voice. The other is for stations using non-voice digital
modes such as RTTY, PSK and WSJT.

The Ross Hull Contest is not a field day, but stations may operate from any
location, or change locations during the contest. Contacts made in the Summer
Field Day can also be included in the Ross Hull Contest log. The only
difference is that for the Field Day the repeat contact time limit is
3 hours, but for the Ross Hull Contest stations may be worked once per band
 per UTC day.

Further details are available in December "AR" magazine and on the WIA web
 site.

 The VKCL Contest Logging Software

Users of the VKCL logging software should download the latest version, which
became available several weeks ago. In particular, multi-operator stations
can avoid any hiccups when merging their logs if all operators are using the
same version of the software. The latest version of VKCL includes
improvements for Field Day logging, and it is essential for the Ross Hull
Contest because it is the only version that supports the new rules. VKCL also
has a log importing facility that allows contacts from a Field Day log to be
imported into a Ross Hull Contest log.

REWIND - A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY
(Will McGhie VK6UU is WIA National Historian)

 HAM RADIO CELEBRATES JACK BINNS

Rewinding to January 23 1909, that's when the American luxury liner,
"Republic," collided with the Italian cargo ship, the "Florida," in
 the icy waters off Nantucket.

That's when a young radio operator named Jack Binns became a hero.

The collision killed two of the "Republic's" passengers and damaged
Binns' radio gear. But the 25 year old Binns quickly made repairs and
began to transmit the distress signal CQD. Although his signal was weak he
was able to reach the wireless station on Nantucket. He stayed at his
wireless for the next 36 hours, sending message after message from his frigid
water-swamped cabin. Eventually, the liner "Baltic," came to the rescue.

When Binns arrived back in New York, he was surprised to find himself
the focus of attention. A ticker tape parade was held in his honour.
He was offered contracts to perform on the vaudeville circuit. A song and a
short film were made about him. No longer was he simply Jack the radio
operator. He had become "CQD Binns" and a certified hero in the public eye.

To honour Binns on the 100th anniversary of the Republic and Florida
collision, amateur radio operators around the are holding an on the
air celebration. You can take part. Full details of the commemorative
 event are on-line
