Meet HAMgpt: Your New Amateur Radio AI Copilot

Artificial intelligence has arrived in amateur radio with the launch of HAMgpt, a specialist AI assistant designed 
specifically for radio amateurs. 
Built on the same underlying AI technology that powers ChatGPT, HAMgpt adds amateur radio-specific knowledge, 
live operating information and station-aware assistance to provide more practical answers than a general-purpose 
chatbot. 
Its aim is simple: help answer the question, "What can I do with my radio today?"

Unlike a general AI assistant, HAMgpt allows operators to build a profile of their station, including their licence 
class, country, grid locator, radios, antennas and operating preferences. 
It combines this information with live propagation, space weather and on-air activity to tailor its responses. 
For example, an Australian amateur might ask:

"I'm in Victoria with a 100 W transceiver and a dipole at 10 metres. 
What are my chances of working Europe on 20 metres this evening?"

Rather than simply explaining how 20 metres behaves, HAMgpt can consider current propagation, grey-line conditions, 
the operator's station capabilities and recent activity to suggest the best operating times, beam headings 
(where applicable), likely DX opportunities and even recommend whether another band might provide a better chance 
of success.

Like all AI systems, however, HAMgpt should be treated as an assistant, not an authority. 
While it can be an excellent starting point for learning, troubleshooting or planning operating activities, 
amateurs should independently verify any advice relating to licence conditions, regulations, power limits, 
frequency allocations, band plans or legal requirements using official sources such as the ACMA, the 
Wireless Institute of Australia and the relevant national regulator. 
AI models can occasionally make mistakes or provide outdated information, particularly where regulations change.

HAMgpt offers both a free tier, with daily usage limits, and a HAMgpt Plus subscription that provides higher 
usage allowances, additional live data lookups and deeper station personalisation. 
Because it is built on ChatGPT technology, users who rely on it regularly may find that a paid subscription 
offers a much better experience than the free plan, which is intentionally limited. It is US-Centric however, 
as its large language model expands this will become less obvious.

HAMgpt is the work of Rodrigo Vazquez, whose amateur radio callsigns are AK6FP (United States) and LU6ERV (Argentina). 
He is an active amateur radio operator and software developer who also created DXLook, the live propagation 
and amateur radio activity platform that provides much of HAMgpt's real-time data.

Artificial intelligence will never replace the experience of an Elmer, but it can certainly complement one. 
Whether you're a newly licensed amateur trying to make your first HF DX contact or an experienced operator 
experimenting with a new antenna, HAMgpt is worth exploring as another tool in the shack.
