Last Monday the ever popular Tech Talk was conducted by Peter VK4EA and
Peter, VK4FDUN on the topic of Surface Mount.
Peter told the meeting that firstly don’t be scared, then to have a steady
hand, a good soldering iron and finally have a good set of tweezers.
Peter had a wide range of commercially available equipment and both he and
Roger explained how large commercial production companies undertaking the
surface mounting of printed circuit boards. This was done by using video
and slides.
By means of a web camera, Peter showed how easy it was to remove components
by means of a hot air gun and then how easy it was to re-solder the component
back into the circuit board.
Members were then invited to come forward and to use the equipment and
have a go. About 20 members took up the offer and flooded both Peter and Roger
with questions and advice as they tried the equipment provided
by Peter and Roger.
After the Tech Talk, Lauren VK4FLMC provided 2 chocolate cakes that she had
baked earlier in the day, for club members to celebrate her 15th birthday.
The cakes disappeared quickly and were thoroughly enjoyed by all members.
Lauren plans to complete her year 12 studies and attend university and complete
her studies in viniculture. Lauren if your cakes are as good as the wine you
intend to make, not only Dad but a lot of club members will be certainly
enjoying themselves.
Some sad news that one of our older club members, Geary Fawke is not very well.
While Geary does not have a callsign, he has been an active member of the club
over a long period.
His son, Matthew, informed the club last night that he is back in hospital.
Apparently the cancer has spread further, the prognosis is not positive.
Club members are praying that Geary will be OK and he is currently accepting
visitors at Redcliffe Hospital, Level 5 West, Bed 11.
Hospital visiting hours are from 11am to 1.30pm and 3.30 pm to 8.00 pm.

November General Meeting
As reported in the news a month or so ago SCARC was coming up to the annual
homebrew awards night. Well this was held on November 4 and we only had 2
entrants but they exemplified the meaning of amateur Radio. From a simple
battery zapper kit from Noel VK4NL to a completely home brewed 2m legal limit
amplifier from Daryl VK4ADM. Daryl has almost completed the linear and it is
a real credit to him, the engineering is excellent and not to waste anything
it is built in an old microwave oven chassis. I am sure it will be heard on
air very soon.
Also at the November meeting our guest speaker was Don Selkirk, a retired
aircraft engineer who had many stories of working in the middle east in the'60s
through to the '90s amid the turmoil and it seems he was very lucky at times,
but what a story it was, thanks very much Don.
SCARC Christmas Meeting
The annual Christmas party will be held on December 2 from 6pm, a quick meeting
and then onto a BBQ and a few drinks to celebrate the success that has been
achieved over the last 12 months.
A raffle will be held with a first prize valued at $50 and the second prize
will most likely get drunk on the night if you know what I mean.
