Iris Williams OAM (ex VK4ZWT) SK
Sad news in this week that will sadden many of TARC's longer
established members, that Iris Williams OAM, former holder of
callsign VK4ZWT and a very active member during the 70's and
early 80's, was killed in a car accident on the Bruce Highway in
the Sunshine Coast Hinterland on Tuesday 2nd September.
Iris was a school teacher during her time in Townsville and also
helped out in the production of Back-scatter magazine. She was
responsible for the drafting and original stencilling of the
Queensland State graphic that has always adorned the front page
of Back-scatter magazine, and apart from her amateur radio
activities was also very active in the local SES.
When she moved to the Sunshine Coast she found her time taken up
with many more community service activities and her participation in
Amateur Radio went on indefinite pause. However Iris was awarded the
Order of Australia for her service to the community which included
active participation in the Sunshine Coast region with the SES,
Red Cross and St. Johns Ambulance and Radio Rhema. In fact it was
when returning from the Radio Rhema AGM Iris was involved in that
tragic fateful accident.
Iris was laid to rest at the Uniting Church, Buderim Friday 12th
September.
Iris is survived by son Bruce, an industrial electrical switchgear
representative in Townsville, and daughter Hazel, a school teacher
in Brisbane.
Thanks to Bill VK4XZ, Dawn VK4HER, Alan VK4PS,
Evie VK4EQ and Geoff VK4KEL for information about Iris,
via VK4ZZ along with "Jocks Journal" a publication for the
commercial radio industry.
