--------------------------------------------
This is WIANEWS for week commencing Aug 17 2008
This week we pay our respect to those Amateur Radio Operators who paid the
supreme sacrifice during 1939 - 1945 the Second World War.
During the 2008 opening address
WIA President VK3KI Michael Owen notes ..
"For this years opening address, we are proud to present 2 Australians who
are currently on active service. Both are licensed Amateurs, VK4IFS and VK4FCCC.
We have one serving somewhere in East Timor the other somewhere in
Afghanistan".
Yes VK4FCCC Lt Chris Megaw in East Timor makes reference during the RD opening
of these "hot spots".
"As the world matures, we STILL have localised areas of conflict and
Australians still serve their nation with great pride, including places like
East Timor and Afghanistan, the two far-flung spots from which these opening
words are being spoken."
In Afghanistan VK4IFS Sgt. Guido Herodes reminded us of what the RD contest
was all about.
"As we celebrate this years Remembrance Day Contest, remember, too, to thank
those remaining old timers for their outstanding efforts in the face of
mighty and overwhelming odds.. it is hard to believe that WWII ended more than
63 years ago, nor, for that mater, that the history of the RD Contest itself
extends unbroken over more than 60 years."
We certainly thank both of these serving Amateurs for opening this years RD,
THE FIRST TIME WE UNDERSTAND THE RD HAS BEEN OPENED FROM THEATRES OF
ACTIVE SERVICE.
As an aside, in Afghanistan, there are three (3) Sgt Hams in the one location.
Yes along with VK4IFS is VK4FPDW and VK4ADX.
Let us pause and recall the Amateurs who did give their lives during WW2

"They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.
Age will not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."
Maybe you noticed a name in that reading being a member of the Merchant Marine,
well Wade VK4ACB the President of the Hervey Bay Amateur Radio Club did.
He recalled "N. E. Gunter VK3NG" and realised he was officially listed as
having been lost off Sandy Cape, Fraser Island, research done on the internet
and with help from Margaret in our WIA National Office and her husband Charlie
VK3LCW, quite a bit of interesting information surfaced.
Radio Officer N. E. Gunter VK3NG went down in the S.S. Kowarra, torpedoed on
the 24TH April 1943 at 6.45 pm by the Japanese long range submarine I-26,
35 miles NE of Sandy Cape, Fraser Island, of the 32 crew only 11 survived,
The ship was en-route from Bowen to Brisbane carrying sugar.
VK3NG was last seen outside the radio room with his lifebelt by the Third
Officer Mr H Hughes, who survived, just before the ship rolled and sank
rapidly.
Now that is not the end of this story, VK4ACB contacted the Hervey Bay RSL,
with the intention to conduct a short ceremony to honour the memory of VK3NG
and the crew of the S.S. Kowarra. The RSL were very supportive and interested
in the ceremony which took place this weekend, such a beautiful place as Fraser
Island it is hard to these days imagine what the crew would have gone through
on that fateful night.
Of course this weekend is not only about RD but the International Lighthouse
Lightship weekend and in line with the objectives of the ILLW, it was
noticed that operations the I-26 submarine carried out involved the
Estevan Point Lighthouse on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
The submarine under the command of Minoru Yokota shelled the lighthouse and a
RDF facility unsuccessfully with its 5.5 inch gun, luckily not hitting anything
vital, this happened before the sub made its way across the Pacific to
Australia and sank the S.S. Korrawa off Sandy Cape.
Emails with Al Winney, VE7CM, Port Alberni, BC, has turned up that up till
3 months ago there was a resident ham at the Estevan Point Lighthouse but
he has now been transferred to another lighthouse at the other end of
Vancouver Island, Al, being the closest ham to the lighthouse will attempt to
contact VK4CHB (The Hervey Bay Club Station) over this weekend to maintain this
unique link between the two lighthouses.
And what became of I-26?
The Japanese say on Oct 26 1944 she may have been sunk by the Coolbaugh
(DE-217) or the next morning in a hedgehog attack by Rowell (DE-403).
The USA version of I-26's demise puts it several months later on Dec 17.

sunk, sinking more than 51,500-tons.

WIA PRESIDENT MICHAEL OWEN VK3KI
May I once again remind you that the ballot for two letter callsigns being
conducted on behalf of ACMA by the WIA is now open?
We have received over 150 applications to participate
As I said last week, to participate you must be qualified. You are qualified
to participate if you hold or are qualified to hold an advanced licence,
you reside permanently in Australia and you do NOT already hold a two letter
callsign.
A list of the available two letter callsigns is on the WIA website, details of
the ballot process can be found on the WIA and ACMA websites and in August AR.
The downloadable application form is on the WIA website, or may be requested
from the WIA office.
The application form must be completed and delivered, by hand or mail, to the
WIA national office by 29 August. The application must be accompanied by the
non refundable payment of $59.74, including GST.
That charge is reasonably related to the anticipated cost of conducting the
ballot.
The ballot will be conducted by Friday 19 September and letters advising
participants whether they have been successful or not will be posted by
24 September.
Now let me read from a release of a few days ago, which may answer some
questions that have been asked.
On 7 February '08, ACMA announced that it would seek to implement contractual
arrangements with the WIA for the provision of certain services, including the
management of amateur examinations, the issue of certificates of proficiency
and certain administrative functions, including the ongoing management of
callsigns.
ACMA and the WIA are in the process of formalising contractual arrangements.
Subject to the outcome of these negotiations, it is expected that the WIA will
be managing callsigns following the Ballot process on 24 October 2008.
At this stage, it is expected that callsigns (including two letter callsigns)
will be treated by the WIA in the same way they were treated prior to October
2005 (that is, they will be available on a "first come, first served" basis).
Neither the WIA or ACMA are in a position to accept any applications for
two letter callsigns at this time. Further announcements on the new
arrangements will be made on or before 24 October 2008.

VK4KG Memorial RD Contest Station Activated
The VK4KG Memorial Station has been active during the Remembrance Day Contest
this weekend with the 24 hour operation happening from Royal Australian Air
Force Garbutt Base near Townsville on lots of HF, 6metre and 2metre frequencies
using both Voice and Morse for contacts.
The operators took time to listen into the RD Contest Opening Address
transmitted on 2metres from 0745Z on Saturday by Lighthouse station VK4WIT,
before getting into the thick of it, having to use consummate skill through the
varying propagation conditions to get contacts.
VK4KG will be on air until at least 0600Z today, if they get lots of contacts
they might even go through to 0800Z, so it's up to you to keep them there!

VK7RTC Back On Deck
It was in July 1983 that Brian VK7RR commissioned VK7RTC a UHF repeater,
at Mt. Nelson in Hobart.
Initially, the first repeater was an ex police department unit, much modified
so as to work in the amateur band. It had an output on a good day of 10 watts.
Well now vk7 have a new repeater again, a commercial radio which is running
50, soon to be increased to 100 watts. Helping VK7RR install this repeater was
Richard VK7ZBX.
And also look out for those International Lighthouse and Lightship
Weekend stations who will be operating around VK7 -
Winston VK7EM operating from Mersey Bluff, Devonport (AU0040);
Wayne VK7FWAY operating from Table Cape, Wynyard (AU0039);

UNITED KINGDOM HAM 'in a pickle'
An elderly radio ham caused traffic chaos and sparked a police hunt
after setting out on a shopping trip to buy a new transceiver.
The 81-year-old man was eventually pulled-over by police after receiving
a spate of calls from worried motorists who had spotted him driving his
8mph mobility scooter along a busy, 70mph dual-carriageway section of the
A27 near Portsmouth in Hampshire on Monday.
Trucks and cars were forced to swerve out of the way as the 81-year-old man
crawled along the middle of the A27.
Our intrepid radio amateur, who has not been named, set off from his home on
Hayling Island near Havant some time before 11am on Monday, heading for the
well-known amateur radio and electronics retailer Nevada, some seven miles away
in Farlington on the outskirts of Portsmouth.
Mike Devereux, Nevada's Managing Director, told Southgate News: "We were amazed
when he turned up at the showrooms in his slippers and buggy, having come the
eight-mile ride from Hayling Island on the main roads!
"He is getting back in to Amateur radio and wanted to buy an Icom 7400 and
power supply. Unfortunately, he could not remember his credit card pin number
and ended up blocking the card and leaving empty handed.
"He left us for the homeward journey.. and the rest, as they say, is history."
Mike added "I am just relieved that he got back home in one piece !"
Police finally caught up with him shortly after 1pm on his return journey,
after he'd initially evaded them on his outward trip. Although his four-mile
spell on the dual carriageway caused traffic chaos, he was not breaking the law
as he was not on a motorway.
Thankfully, he'll live to 'Tx' another day, after concerned police officers
gave him some "stern" road safety advice, then took both the battery-powered
scooter and its driver home in a police van.
Let's hope that when he finally does get back on-air, he's not heard signing
/MOBILE!

IRISH SCOUT JAMBOREE MEMBERS FALL VICTIM TO A DIB DOB - ROB!
During the last night of the Jamboree in Ireland someone stole the DK8ZM
"Rare Radio scouting and JOTA Badges collection", some 300 items!
As it was not until the last day, the badges are thought to have been
removed from the Jamboree site before they were found to be missing.
David GI4FUM in a yahoo group posting said "Irish members of the amateur
radio team immediately swung into action by producing a poster with a
photograph of the badge collection on it to be distributed to all leaders
at the camp and they distributed it personally within 30 minutes of
discovering the theft".
Irish police are investigating.

USA - CHANGING OF THE GUARD - PAUL TIBBETS SK
Late last year the ham who flew the aircraft that dropped the first Atomic Bomb
in combat over Japan died. He was 92 year old Paul Tibbets, the former K4ZVZ.
Tibbets' historic mission in the plane named for his mother marked the
beginning of the end of World War II.
The plane and its crew of 14 dropped the five-ton bomb nick named
"Little Boy" on the morning of August 6, 1945. The blast killed some
80,000 people and levelled the city of Hiroshima. Tibbets never
expressed regret over his role. He said it was his patriotic duty and
the right thing to do.
K4ZVZ was cremated and his ashes spread across the English Channel,
a place that he said he love to fly across.
USA - OMAHA 2 HAMS MURDERED
Steve (NĜUS) and Carolyn (NĜLAL) Bailys' bodies were found shortly after noon
Sunday in their rural home.
A 34-year-old transient with a history of drug dealing, was in custody on
suspicion of murder.
US Police believe that the killer acted alone, selecting the Bailys' by chance.
OUTER SPACE Delfi DO-64 transponder activated
The 435 to 145MHz linear transponder onboard the Delfi DO-64
satellite has been activated.
The transponder uplink is 435.570 to 435.530MHz and the downlink
is 145.880 to 145.920MHz. All frequencies are +/- Doppler shift
that can be up to 3kHz at 145MHz. The transponder is inverting,
which means Lower Sideband is translated to a Upper Sideband
signal on the downlink.
Delfi DO-64 was built at the Delft University of Technology in the
Netherlands. Since it was launched in April it has been collecting
educational research data for use by the university students with
the assistance of radio amateurs around the world.
OUT OF SPACE Amateurs requested to listen for satellite
Jason Anderson, KI6GIV, at California Polytechnic State University
is requesting amateur radio operators worldwide to assist with
capturing the telemetry of the Cal Poly CP4 satellite.
According to Anderson there has been some unpredictable behaviour
on the CP4 satellite. He says that controllers only have contact
with the satellite once every 12 hours so it would be extremely
helpful if they could get some global support in collecting beacon
transmissions. That way they would get a more complete picture of
the satellite's health. CP4 downlinks on 437.325MHz using FSK
lower sideband modulation. The baud rate is 1200 with beaconing
every minute. Audio or decoded binary data along with other
reports go by e-mail to jander06<at>calpoly.edu.

REWIND - A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY
(Will McGhie VK6UU is WIA National Historian)
In this years RD opening we heard from serving members of our Armed
Services on active duty in Afghanistan and East Timor, these days of
Sat phones, Chat Rooms and the internet even normal mobile phones
is a long way from the days of censored mail to love ones during WW2.
And a long way from the Timorese efforts by members of the 2/2nd
Independent Company who constructed a transmitter receiver to get
messages back to Australia.
In mid-April 1942, nearly two months after the surrender of Sparrow Force,
signals began to be received in Darwin purporting to be from survivors of
the unit.
These men were using what came to be known as "Winnie the war-winner", a
radio devised from pieces of other sets and from parts scrounged among
the troops or stolen from the enemy. The bulk of the work on this lifeline
for the men of Timor was undertaken by Signallers Max Loveless and
Keith Richards, assisted by Jack Sargent and John Donovan.
After several days of communication using "Winnie" - and the answering
of some personal questions - headquarters was convinced of the authenticity
of the signals, and was able to arrange for much-needed supplies to be
delivered to the isolated troops.
Winnie the war-winner is on display at the War Museum in Canberra.
