 Central Highlands in Central Queensland
 http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/charc/

Central Highlands Amateur Radio Club Secretary Gordon VK4KAL
reminds everyone that the Annual General Meeting will be held yet
again at Camp Fairbairn near Emerald Central Queensland from
4pm Friday September 19th until Midday Sunday September 21st.

The weekend not only includes the AGM but also a Monster Auction
of Treasure and Delectables, a hearty BBQ on Saturday Evening,
a seminar or two about technical and handicraft subjects and the
 famous Sunday Morning Recovery Breakfast.

Gordon states that so far there has been a feeble response and
bookings are down on last year - so don't let the fuel prices make
you wimp out of a great weekend !

Accommodation is available on site for $13.20 per person per night,
bring your own linen or cosy sleeping bag and your favourite pillow.
Gordon advises that those attending from Friday evening will have
to feed themselves up to Saturday evening when the BBQ takes over.
Make sure to bring some eating and drinking tools too, just in case !
Gordon will appreciate it too if you change your fifties and hundreds
into smaller denominations to pay for the treasure or produce you
successfully bid for and asks you to remember to use this golden
opportunity to empty the shack or cook up a storm for the Monster Auction,
the main revenue raiser for the club that supports the licensing,
maintenance and expansion of the extensive Central Queensland repeater network.

You need to contact Gordon VK4KAL on 07 49854168
or email to donvk4kal(AT)bigpond.com no later than Sunday
14th September, the cut-off date for catering and accommodation.
Get in contact with Gordon right now, and lets see if we can beat
last year's bumper attendance numbers !

 next Saturday 23 August.

 REDCLIFFE

 Redcliffe goes digital!

Peter VK4TGV spent just a couple of hours last week setting up the Redcliffe
club station radios and PCs for digital modes.

One of the club's Icom radios is now connected to the multi-band vertical and
interfaced to the desktop PC using a Signalink SL1+ interface, and a home made
CAT cable supplied by David, VK4DC.

The programs, Ham Radio Deluxe and Digital Master 780 have been installed and
configured on the club's computers as VK4RC and Peter also set-up PCALE for
Emcomm messaging with the Australian HFN Pilot Station.

So there you go, the club station is now fully digital capable for those club
members who wish to explore that portion of the hobby.

Thanks Peter and David and on the third Monday in September the club's
technical talk will also by Peter VK4TGV on Digital modes & the set-up / use
of the digital modes and equipment set up in the club radio room

Next Monday nights technical talk will be by Stuart, VK4TSB on the construction
and operation of screw driver antennas

During this weekend's RD contest, club members are camping out at a very cold
Murrenbong Scout Camp near Petrie and have been busy re-learning the simple
things such as terminating coax, setting up and tuning antennas and measuring
antennas and field operation of radios as well as contacting as many stations
 as possible.

The club now also has a new web site and you can visit them
when you read the text editions of this news.

Plans for the JOTA weekend are almost in place. This year the club has been
advised that between 300 to 400 scouts will be at Murrenbong.

Peter VK4TAA has invited all radio clubs in the South East Queensland area to
either visit the site during the weekend either to provide assistance
or pop along & see what and how the Club is doing.
Gary VK4FGAZ will be the co-ordinator for the scouts in & out of the camp site.
Andy VK4KY, reported that he is working on a short list of kits for the scouts
to build during their visit to the campsite. There will also be the chance for
scouts and cubs to complete their communications badges.

So please mark 18th & 19th October in your calendars as this is a big weekend
for the scouts and promoting the hobby to approx 30 scouts per hour that visit
 their campsite.

A note also that the club is now open every Wednesday with Ken VK4FKEN &
Charles VK4BTC, opening up for members' activities.

One of the club members, Bevan, VK4BCM donated a Children's book on amateur
radio, titled "Rescue Radio". The Club has decided that the book would greatly
assist the students of the Caboolture Special School who have been ably
supported by Peter VK4HOY & Alan VK4KZ in amateur radio training & guidance and
who are now members of the Redcliffe Club. Peter VK4HOY accepted the donation
 on behalf of the school.

All are welcome and tables are still available please contact Harry VK4TK

Our Maleny 2m repeater is now working very well into Brisbane and even out to
Kilcoy thanks to the efforts of the repeater team. The fact that it is on a
very high point at Maleny helps. We still have a few niggling interference
issues to sort out but they will be rectified soon.
We have also replaced our 2m and 70cm repeaters at Noosa with new Vertex units
courtesy of the gaming grant and these are also working much better than the
old tired commercial radios we had in there.

SCARC are operating during the lighthouse weekend on Saturday the 16th from
the old Caloundra lighthouse (AUS 124) in Edith st Caloundra using VK4WIS
Come on and have some fun and give them a call.

Our last meeting was our BBQ meeting and was well attended. catering by the
social committee was excellent with only 1 sausage left over and this was
 eventually eaten.

Our next general meeting on 2nd September features yours truly VK4VP giving a
presentation on APRS and the many useful things it can provide. We now have
approximately 10 members of the club dabbling in APRS in some form or another.

Recently one of our long standing members underwent some extensive surgery and
is breathing much easier due to a new set of lungs. We wish Geoff VK4KEL all
the best in his recovery, which is sounding very good. We must also spare a
moment or two for the donor and their family.

Lighthouse Parties active in the North

Members of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club have just finished
their DXpedition to Cape Cleveland Lighthouse and are on their
way back across Cleveland Bay onboard the mighty barge Hercules.

The Guys and Gals had a great time bolstering the awareness of Lighthouse
history and preservation, supporting some local stations with
RD Contest contacts, trying out some new wire antennae and achieving
 some excellent aquatic wildlife sightings.

Members of the Tablelands Radio Group have been activating
Grassy Hill Light at Cooktown with the contingent involved with
voice morse and data contacts with other lighthouses the
world over, trying out some new wire and beam arrays and
also gathering some good media coverage both for the lighthouses
 and amateur radio.

The scene is similar across the world, with 376 stations officially listed as
active, 46 of those in Australia and 8 of those in Queensland.
