Peter Twyford of Cambooya, (or Wombat, his Scout name) joined the Cambooya
Scout Group in 2002 as an Assistant Scout Leader. In June of the same year
he became Scout Leader and the Scout section has flourished under his
leadership.
Over the years the Cambooya Scouts have received accolades and awards at the
Standards Camp and Nighthawk; seen 2 members, under Peter's guidance, gain
the highest award possible for a scout the "Australian Scout Medallion";
Raised funds so that scouts could attend the Australian Jamboree.
Peter and members of the Cambooya Scouts have also attended the Agoonoree camp
for mentally and physically challenged youth where the scouts assist these
people in their daily needs and well as doing camping activities with them.
This allows the attendees to enjoying camping and outdoors activities and
give their families a break also.
In 2007 Peter was one of the troop leaders for this camp.
In 2007 Peter started as Assistant Troop Leader at the Australian Scout
Jamboree and has also taken on the role of Assistant Regional Commissioner
- Scouts section for the Darling Downs.
The scouts and their families, and indeed the community as a whole, have
enormous respect for Peter and agree he provides so many positive
opportunities for the youth of Cambooya.
HAMS FLY IN TO HELP WITH FLOODED COMMS.
Emergency Communications in Queensland flood
A flying squad of radio amateurs, members of the RECOM Red Cross Emergency
Communications have completed a six day assignment in flood hit Emerald
in central Queensland.
Some six months ago RECOM was asked by the Red Cross to form a core group
that could be on call should the need arise anywhere in Australia.
Although RECOM which began in Victoria has been involved in various natural
disasters, this was the first occasion that its newly formed flying squad
was put to the test.
Starting on early Monday January the 21st, RECOM set up in the Emerald
Relief Centre primarily to record details of 3,000 evacuees and then upload that
information to the Red Cross national database.
Apart from the information being used to provide relatives with a means of
finding out about their loved ones via the national call centre phone line,
the information was also used by a range of stake-holders in disaster
management and recovery.
At the height of the flood, the worst since 1950, more than a thousand homes
were evacuated and businesses were flood when the Nogoa River which divides
the township, broke its banks.
While the RECOM crew have returned home after a job well done, the Red Cross
still has a contingent in the field assisting those who affected by the flood.

The Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society repeater team has installed an
ICOM IC-RP1220 23CM repeater at the broadcast site at Springbrook, under the
callsign VK4RGO, the transmit frequency is 1273.100 & the receive frequency
is 1293.100, no CTCSS is required and the time out is 5.0 minutes. The antenna
is a Diamond X5000 located at the top of 40 meter tower, this antenna is also
used for the Gold Coast 70CM repeater on 438.225 / 433.225 as well as the
Gold Coast APRS digi.
Reports have been very encouraging with base stations at Kallangur, Ipswich &
the North Coast accessing it and a 1 watt handheld from on top of the
Toowoomba range at Mt Kynoch.
The 6 meter repeater at the same site under the same callsign on
53.800 / 52.800 is due to be commissioned with the next month (hopefully it
won't rain!)

IRLP Node 6702
Well what a truly fantastic day at the Club house last weekend. It was a
diagnostic day thanks to VK4OX. There was a good roll up of members to have
their radio diagnosed for any problems that they may have and at a later date
there will be another day to have them repaired.
A good roll up to the General Meeting yesterday to see where the Club is
heading in the coming year and of course after the meeting the sausage sizzle.
On the 16th February we are having another ALARA Luncheon at the club house
and those ladies are asked to bring a plate share and the OM's will have a
BBQ.
This is a good way off but another weekend has been organised for Sharp and
if you are interested it is the Queens Birthday weekend please contact
Dave VK4AO for information.
If you know of anyone wishing to upgrade or obtain a Foundation licence then
you can contact Roy VK4IG on 5539-3530

Redcliffe and District Radio Club
Quite an active week for all members including a hotly contested monthly fox
hunt held on last Monday Night.
4 highly motivated teams headed out to find fox after Ken, VK4FKEN, who has
the ability to find obscure locations, said the hunt was on!
The great rivalry between Charlie, VK4YZ and Peter, VK4TAA came to the fore
with a win apiece.
Club members were also very active with the "AX" callsign on Australia Day
with James, VK4TJF extremely active on 20 metres working the Central European
stations.
Many 10 metre contacts are currently being made with Doug, VK4FADM, working
his first 10 metre contact from Brisbane to the east coast of Tasmania and
later his first 40 metre contact to a mobile station.
The Australia Day weekend also proved popular for the refurbishing of
antennas and getting ready for the increasing sunspot cycle and better dx
conditions.
Shaun, VK4FSOS was over the moon with his first 80 metre contact with his new
long wire antenna and overjoyed that the "Boss" has not yet noticed the wire
extensions to his antenna.
TABLELANDS RADIO AND ELECTRONICS CLUB

The Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club Inc held another successful
foxhunt event on Sunday January 27th.
This time the fox was Dale VK4DMC who was lurking in the vicinity of the
Kairi Research Station on the shores of Lake Tinaroo.
First to track down the wily fox was TREC President Trevor VK4ZFC
with an elapsed time of just over half an hour.
Dave VK4ADW was one minute behind Trevor.
After the hunt the hounds and fox retired to Rotary Park in Atherton for an
enjoyable sausage sizzle conducted in true Aussie tradition in keeping with
our Australia Day long weekend.
They also had a surprise visit from one of the more remote TREC members,
Lyn VK4SWE and her OM Tex. Lyn and Tex were passing through Atherton on
their way back to Sweers Island (a legendary fishing resort in the Gulf of
Carpentaria) after their annual break. Lyn and Tex stayed for lunch and all
had a great time.

14 bods camped over at Bluewater Girl Guides Camp during the TARC Australia
Day Weekend Family Radio Camp which incorporated some experimenting with
large antennae in the great outdoors, a portable transmission of WIA National
News onto the local VHF repeater, a tryout of some new field equipment that
will be used later in the year during the John Moyle Field Day and Lighthouse
Weekends and a very comprehensive demonstration of sound-card based computer
operating modes by David VK4BDJ.
Some day visitors joined in the fun and everyone commented on the perfect
sunny weather and the fact that the weekend camp was too short!
Creature comforts were not ignored with a number of television systems on
site to provide the tennis and cricket action.
If you didn't make it to Bluewater then start gearing up for the TARC John
Moyle Field Day at Bivouac Junction in March.
All the operating, experimenting and socialising you can absorb plus Redclaw!
