Last Monday’s technical talk was about Radio Frequency Identification presented
by Rodger, VK4FDUN.
About 30 "Reddy Members" found out all about RFID technology which has been
available for more than fifty years. He told us that it has only been recently
that the ability to manufacture the RFID devices has fallen to the point where
they can be used as a "throwaway" inventory or control devices
Rodger related his experiences with the integration of RFID devices with
vegetable crates used in the supermarket industry where he found even if you
are 99.9% correct in the counting of crates, you have just lost over 3 million
crates!
Rodger also said in his work he uses modern wire winding data from 1946 and
introduced many members to LITZ wire , a new technology developed in 1896!
Litz wire consists of a number of individually insulated wires twisted or
braided into a uniform pattern, so that each strand tends to take all possible
positions in the cross-section of the entire conductor. Its multi-strand
configuration is designed to minimize the power losses exhibited in solid
conductors due to "skin effect". It counteracts the effect by increasing the
amount of surface area without significantly increasing the size of the
conductor.
Thanks Rodger a great presentation.
Redcliffe club’s Annual General Meeting is tomorrow, Monday 16th at the club
rooms 7.30 pm and nomination forms for all management positions can be
downloaded from the Club’s website or nominations can be made immediately
before the AGM and will be available on the night.
