Digital TV threatening community stations' survival

The head of Brisbane's community TV station Briz 31 says community broadcasting
will not survive if it remains locked out of digital television.

Perth's community TV station Access 31 already looks likely to stop
broadcasting this month because of a funding shortfall.

Briz 31's Andrew Carroll says all community television stations are losing
viewers and advertisers because they are unable to broadcast digitally.

He says the Federal Government should pay for community television stations to
 get digital channels.

"You cannot lose 30 per cent of your customers and expect there not to be some
impact on your business," he said.
"We are operating comfortably at the present time, but if we continue to lose
audience share because of government decision making, well then it's going to
be very difficult for us to survive."

Question: how many communities in the bush – Australia wide – have access to
 digital, other than ABC/SBS?

Ahhh but who pays the Federal Government for this? You and I !!

AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS

And here is a good guy prepared to give you a free phone call!

Well You ring him with your question, he will ring you back.

Who is "This Weeks Good Guy"?

 Listen up!

The FISTS Down Under Club consists of a group of VK and ZL hams dedicated to
 furthering the use of CW.

FISTS are starting a new net.

While the main idea is to provide a meeting place for members, it is hoped that
new non-members and new comers to CW will also attend. With the latter
category of enthusiast in mind it has been decided to have net control on SSB,
believing it will encourage those operators still in the nervous stage to check
 in.

Participants will be paired off in the order they check in and directed to a
CW frequency for a chat. It is much like the well known Sunday CW net at
10am EST on 7025kHz except NCS is on SSB.

The net will be held each Wednesday 0930Z, on 3546kHz plus or minus QRM.

No one owns a frequency! So, be prepared to tune around, probably upwards.

Anyone looking for further information can ring David Ball on (03) 5756 2084
and he will ring you back immediately, thus minimising your costs.

Please share with him and ideas you may have for the development of the Net.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS With thanks to RSGB, Southgate AR Club, the ARRL,
Amateur Radio Newsline, NZART and the WW sources of the WIA.

 HELP IS ON ITS WAY:

Ham radio is regarded as the best back-up communication system during calamities
says an item in the Indian press.

Abhijit Pant and other amateur Ham operators are taking part in a novel
initiative – they are using Ham radio as a rescue tool during the monsoon season
 in Mumbai this year

When telephone lines fail and mobile networks get jammed, voices crackling over
the airwaves could save citizens caught in waterlogged areas.

“When everything fails, we rise. This is a challenge and Ham Radio really works
during crucial occasions. Ham radio is better than other means of communication,
 ö Abhijit said.

When they receive information about stranded people, mobile Ham stations and
Ham operators relay information to a centralised control room which helps those
in distress get access to emergency services.

It may have started as amateur radio, but with the skills involved, it’s far
from being just amateur. So during a heavy downpour, Ham radio could help make
 life easier for Mumbaikars.

 WEIRD N WONDERFUL

Engineers Build First Self-Replicating 3D Machine

As biologists are busy working on cloning living organisms, engineers are
working on a mechanical counterpart - creating non-living things that can
 replicate themselves.

New Scientist have reported how more than 100 researchers from around the world
have been working on a project called Rep-Rap (Replicating Rapid-prototyper).

Rep-Rap the world's first 3D printer can print pieces which can be assembled
by hand to make an exact copy of the original printer.

The replica is no mule, either - it can also print another copy of itself.

So far, RepRap can only reproduce its plastic parts, and not its metal or
electronics. It takes a human a few hours to assemble the copied pieces into
 another printer.

Besides replicating itself, it can also print plastic 3D objects including
coat hooks, water-filter insects, children's sandals, and much more.

People already "run their own CD burners, printing presses and photographic
laboratories", said Adrian Bowyer, the University of Bath mechanical engineer
who launched the RepRap project. "There's no reason they shouldn't run their
 own factories as well."

Now if only Rep-Rap could replicate my voice when I get the croaks!!

 Inaugural Winter VHF-UHF Field Day

The first Summer VHF-UHF Field Day was held in 1989, and then in 1998 it was
joined by the Spring VHF-UHF Field Day. These events have become more popular
each year, and activity has doubled over the last few years. So now these two
Field Days will be joined by a third event - the first Winter VHF-UHF Field Day.

This will be held over the weekend of June 21 and 22.

Operation in the Field Day can be for 24 hours or 8 hours, and there are
sections for single operator and multi-operator stations. And if you don't feel
like heading for the hills at this time of year, there is also a home station
 section.

The rules are very simple, so why not give it a go? The rules will be published
in the June issue of "Amateur Radio" magazine, and full details are also
available in the Contests section of the WIA web site. This includes the rules,
a scoring sheet, and other information about the VHF-UHF Field Day.

 Amateur Radio Magazine Preview
 June 2008

Now, a reminder about Amateur Radio magazine. The June issue is already at your
newsagents. You can’t miss the big black Yaesu FT-950 transceiver on the cover.

Kindly lent to the WIA for review purposes, the brand-new Yaesu FT-950 was given
a thorough work-out by three amateurs with years and years of experience; namely
Ron Fisher VK3OM, Bill Roper VK3BR and Eric Buggee VK3AX. You will find their
interesting report, and photos of the rig, on page 24.

The transceiver covers the HF and 6 m amateur bands and is chock-a-block with
the all the latest features. The layout of the controls on the front panel are
explained in detail, and so are the endless facilities, both routine and
specialised, available through the internal software.

Then the reviewers give you their assessment of the on-air performance of this
unit, first the receiver and then the transmitter. They compare the capabilities
of this equipment with other makes and models that they have used on their many
QSOs in the past. And they provide a summary on page 27.

It looks really simple – just look at the circuit diagram on page 7. But a
high-performance low-noise amplifier for 70 cm (around 430 MHz) needs some
careful attention to detail, both in the design and in the layout and
 construction.

Filip Zalio VK3FLP does pay close attention to all those details, and explains
what to watch out for and why. The article shows just how successful he was,
with an excellent photo of the CRO display to prove both the noise figure
(0.34 dB) and the gain characteristics of the LNA.

The unit is extremely compact and employs mostly surface mount devices (SMDs).

The layout and circuit board art-work are included in the article, plus a
photo of the finished LNA. You can get the art-work by e-mail on request.
Filip passes on his construction tips and precautions, and considers that SMDs
are “easier to work with than thru-holesö.

China is in the news these days, for any number of reasons. Turn to page 14 for
an absorbing article by Edwin Lowe VK2VEL about amateur radio in China and the
many, many Australians (radio amateurs and others) who visit that country
 nowadays.

Edwin tells us how a QSO he had last year on 20 m led to his visits to China.
Not only that, but Edwin is a lecturer at Macquarie University in Chinese
history and contemporary China, so his interests are not only those of the
in-depth academic but also those of the radio amateur enthusiast. This is a
 most interesting and enlightening article.

There is a description of the amateur radio licensing system in China and
guidance on how to obtain a visitor’s operating licence. Getting such a licence
is relatively simple but you need to be hosted by a radio club.

And Edwin takes the reader on a tour of the streets in a Chinese city with
commentary on the economic, social and historic factors that underlie modern
China. Fascinating, with photos to add to the interest!!

Keen on VHF and UHF? turn to page 52 for this regular segment on your specialty.
David Smith VK3HZ reports on recent DX contacts on 2 m, including a
Launceston-Adelaide QSO. And the arcane art of Earth-Moon-Earth (EME)
communication sounds easy, with a first-hand report on 13 cm (that’s around
2,300 MHz) contest activity by enthusiast Trevor Benton VK4AFL.

Rex Moncur VK7MO, who is also deep into EME, describes what it takes to set a
new digital record here on planet earth. Using 43 cm and 65 cm dishes at 10GHz,
and digitally synchronised from GPS signals, he and David VK3HZ communicated
between Mt Cowley near Lorne and Mt Baw Baw in Gippsland – over an amazing
224.7 km path. See the photos. As well, he relates some of the successes and
disappointments during recent 10 GHz tropo-scatter experiments between VK3 and
 VK7.

Put this in your diary, especially if you are into VHF and UHF. The annual
GippsTech conference is on again, Saturday and Sunday 5-6 July. It is held at
the Monash University, Churchill campus, near Morwell in Gippsland. WIA member
or not, all you need is a passion for V/UHF. More details on page 40 of Amateur
Radio magazine, plus an update by Chris Morley VK3CJK on page 33.

The third ARRL Public Relations campaign -- We Do That - with Amateur Radio --
celebrates the technology side of ham radio.

According to ARRL Media and Public Relations Manager Allen Pitts, W1AGP,
Amateur Radio means many things to many people. "What is it about Amateur Radio
that arouses the interest of people?" Pitts asked. "You have the fun,
friendship and hobby side. And you have the technology and creative side.

In 2008, we are capitalizing on this third prong, getting word out to the
public that there is tons of stuff you can do with Amateur Radio."

Like the previous public relations campaigns, Pitts said, this is a campaign
with several interlocking parts including Public Service Announcements that can
be played on commercial radio stations.

 Check these out on the ARRL Public Information Officer Web site;

And as a sample here is the "Grand Dad" commercial with a WIA tag.

 WIRELESS WEATHER

 Reach for the ionosphere

Imagine being able to visit the ionosphere to see its current condition,
forecast condition and how it works, from the very comfort of your own home.

Well NASA-funded researchers have released a live model of the ionosphere and
through the use of software and Google Earth, anyone can now virtually fly
 through it.

NASA’s Living with a Star program awarded a grant to Space Environment
Technologies, Inc. of California, which in turn partnered with Space
Environment Corp. of Utah and the US Air Force to develop the 4-dimension
 ionosphere.

The real-time system is updated every ten minutes. The ionosphere is important
for many radio communication applications including satellite navigation GPS
technology. But it’s of increasing importance too for the growing number of
commercial flights crossing the Article Circle to achieve shortest travel
distance. While over the Arctic aircraft lose satellite contact and require
reliable propagation predictions to ensure they stay in contact via conventional
 radio communications.

In a recent development, scientists believe they may be on the edge of
developing a method to forecast earthquakes by using the ionosphere.

They’re exploring a link between atmospheric electrical disturbances and
imminent earthquakes – such a sign was observed prior to China’s recent
 catastrophic quake.

 I’m Jim Linton VK3PC and you’re listening to VK1WIA.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP --- MILITARY

If Jeff Hammer gets his way, he'll be an awfully busy soldier in the run-up
to Father's Day June 15. That's the USA's Father's day date of course.

Captain Jeff Hammer represents the Army Military Affiliate Radio System in Iraq,
and he has appealed to the families of troops deployed overseas to shower down
with holiday messages for their loved ones.

These free messages, called MARSgrams, date back to the Korean War when many
thousands were delivered. The service continued in Vietnam and the first
Gulf War, but had fallen off with the advent of e-mail and cell phones.

As the military's Middle East operations continue, however, responses from
the area have indicated soldiers treasure the printed MARSgrams as mementos
of their deployment, not just a greeting. E-mail just isn't the same.

MARSgram traffic spurted last Thanksgiving and Christmas. As for Father's Day
MARSgrams, "I am 100 per cent set up to deal with them," Captain Hammer said.

A National Guardsman from Indiana, Jeff has previously served in Afghanistan.

In addition to volunteering for the MARS assignment, he is acting as station
custodian for the Baghdad Amateur Radio Society.
