Wal Douglas Memorial Ride announced
A couple of weeks ago in the VK4 local news, we brought news that Wal Douglas
VK4AIV had gone Silent Key in Mackay.
His funeral service began with the QNEWS item announcing his passing.
Wal was held in such high regard by Central Queensland Horse Endurance Riders
that they have just announced the inaugural Wal Douglas Memorial Ride.
It's all happening on the weekend of September 6th and 7 ending up at the
Retreat Hotel near Denison Creek and the riders expect Radio Amateurs to attend
in big numbers.
More information about the event will be posted on the Mackay Club
pages at the Wireless Institute of Australia website wia.org.au
Live hologram an Australian first
In an Australian first, Telstra has used a hologram to beam its Chief
Technology Officer, Dr Hugh Bradlow, live into Adelaide from Melbourne
to talk at a major function for senior business executives.
Dr Bradlow addressed and interacted with the audience for around 15 minutes and
conducted a real time media conference following the function.
Staging Connections in collaboration with Telstra, Bytecraft Entertainment
and in partnership with Musion Australia combined their respective experience
and know-how to deliver this exciting industry first, which represents
a new generation of video conferencing innovation in Australia.
Group Managing Director for Telstra Enterprise and Government, David Thodey,
said "We've all seen this sort of thing in futuristic sci-fi movies, but the
reality is that it can be done here and now, as we have just demonstrated,
because of the scope and capability of Telstra's world leading networks.
The hologram was delivered over Telstra's high speed network using the Musion®
EyelinerÖ System, a high definition holographic video projection system that
allows three-dimensional moving images to appear within a live stage setting.

AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS
Nick gets a gong
As seen in The Cairns Post 2nd June edition Nick Watling VK4YT, former RAAF
pilot and Vietnam Vet, former Chief Pilot for The Royal Flying Doctor Service
and avid military radio restorer has received a Queensland Day award for the
volunteer work he now does with the Coast Guard.
Nick was quoted saying that others should have gotten the award
that is Nick being the modest gent that he is.
Congratulations Nick - well deserved.
The Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club are pretty "chuffed" their member
Bryn VK7FBAW has just been awarded George Town's 'Volunteer of the Year' award,
in recognition for the dedication he gives to monitoring the various marine
bands with the Tamar Sea Rescue Association.
VK7FBAW broadcasts weather forecasts at least three times a day on the VHF
marine band and when significant weather events are expected, Bryn also
notifies amateurs on the VK7RAA repeater.
Congratulations Bryn, a very well deserved award to another of ham radio's
"Good Guys".
AMATEUR RADIO "NAMES IN THE NEWS"
Chuck Adams, K7QO has had an article in the Wall Street Journal about his
many hobbies.
J. M. Cornwell, AC0CA, a US syndicated freelance journalist decided to contact
Chuck and find out the story for herself.
You see it has been reported that Chuck, K7QO copies Morse code accurately at
140 words per minute, making him one of the fastest operators in the world.
When contacted about his amazing feat he said “Code competitions that I [did]
as a teenager didn’t allow typewriters, so it was done with pen and paper
[where] I used to win at 40-45 WPM. To this day, I still do hard copy of every
QSO that I have. At high speeds, I grab a typewriter, an electric one.
“Plain text without hard copy, also known as copying in your head, …is much
more difficult to measure as you have to rely on what someone repeats back to
you after a session. But this doesn’t have to be 100% copy. There are guys who
consistently carry on QSOs at 110-120 WPM, but those QSOs are disappearing from
the bands. [The third way is a] computer program which is where the 140.9 WPM
comes from for me and the 200 WPM that two individuals did at the IARU
competition in the European Union.
Although the FCC and most overseas authorities took out the code requirement
in ham radio licensing, the story of Morse code is far from over.
One US group is attempting to set a new world record in the International
Amateur Radio Union (IARU) high speed competition in 2010 and is looking
for a place to hold the competition.
Whatever the reason for getting into high speed Morse code, one thing is
certain; it’s all about practice, time and more practice, but above all,

INTERNATIONAL NEWS With thanks to RSGB, Southgate AR Club, the ARRL,
Amateur Radio Newsline, NZART and the WW sources of the WIA.
Otago daily times are reporting on the NZART AGM last weekend.
Steve Hepburn in his paper tells how Dunedin hosted the New Zealand Association
of Radio Transmitters Inc annual conference during the weekend and as an
"add on", many members of the association went to Shag Valley Station, near
Palmerston to visit the site of the first transworld radio broadcast in 1924.
Amateur radio experi- menter and operator Frank Bell made history on the
evening of October 18, 1924, when he transmitted Morse code messages from
his home in Shag Valley.
The short-wave signals were received and replied to by London-based amateur
operator Cecil Goyder.
At the time, this was not only the first amateur radio contact around the
world, but also the first radio transmission of any kind to be sent and
received at such a distance.
Mr Bell's radio gear has been preserved at Shag Valley Station and was
visited by the enthusiasts yesterday.
Frank Bell's son Alf Bell was present to talk about the pieces of equipment
in the collection.

In your part of the world John, VK6JB, is the moderator of a 40m DX Net that
presently runs on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 1200-1330z. on 7077khz
If QRM'd they move up to 7092 kHz
John states that this net may be quite early in the morning for some DX stations
and is interested in starting another net possibly between 7.125-7.200 MHz if
a clear frequency could be found for the duration of a net.
He adds, "As the seasons change, so do the broadcast stations, but it is worth
a try to find a frequency so we can all join in on the DX net together".
There are many VK stations from the west to the east coast that like to
work 40m DX. If you can join the present net or assist in finding a clear net
frequency, please send any frequency reports to vk6jb(AT)wia.org.au and he will

WY1U SAYS TO NOT USE CLONED D-STAR INFO SITE
Tim Mik, WY1U, says over the D-Star re-mailer that the D-Star Search
Page that he created and updates daily has been copied. This, without
his approval by another group or individual in the United Kingdom who
has placed it on the World-Wide-Web using its own URL.
Tim says that the U-K site was not given permission to copy his page.
He says that he has asked the owners to place a link to the original
page instead, but they have ignored his request to do so. So Tim is
instead asking all D-Star user to ignore the U-K based clone and come
directly to his website for the latest D-Star operational information.

A POSSIBLE ROBOTIC THREAT TO 70 CM
Howard Gordon, W3CQH, reports over the VHF Reflector on a Public notice
posted by the FCC. This, on a proposal to use 430 to 448 MHz for
remotely-controlled surveillance robots for emergency use.
Gordon says that for the power proposed and the limited use, In that he
does not believe the device will cause any significant interference to
the amateur radio service. But he says that the real issue for the
manufacture is how to stop the hams from interfering with the
surveillance device.
W3CQH says that the possible threat to ham radio may be that once the
manufacturer has its foot in the door on 440mhz, it could conceivably
start petitioning the FCC for channelization to be done and assigned to
it citing interference problems that have occurred in some future
alleged emergency situations.
You can read the full FCC release on this robot device at

AWARDS'
WORKED ALL QUEENSLAND AWARD
This an update on the Worked all Queensland Shires Award.
As you know the Queensland shires were amalgamated in March this year and this
necessitated a rewrite of the WAQ shires rules and shires list.
There are now 73 shires and all ready it has created great interest amongst VK
hams.
There has been one log already submitted to the award manager John Spooner
VK4AJS and there are a few others out there with over forty shires worked to
date.
Stations from VK3, VK2, VK5 as well as many VK4’s are working many of the
shires. One interesting point of note is the help that mobile stations are
giving to those who are chasing some of the hard to work shires in the more
remote parts of the state.
Some operators make trips into a particular shire simply to activate it for
others to work.
There is a group established on the Yahoo Groups site where information is
exchanged about just who is in what shire and when they will be on air.
Go to the Yahoo Group site and search for the group name “waqsaö

MEDIA WATCH
Amateur Radio Magazine Preview
June 2008
Now, a reminder about Amateur Radio magazine. The June issue is already at your
newsagents. You can’t miss the big black Yaesu FT-950 transceiver on the cover.
Kindly lent to the WIA for review purposes, the brand-new Yaesu FT-950 was given
a thorough work-out by three amateurs with years and years of experience; namely
Ron Fisher VK3OM, Bill Roper VK3BR and Eric Buggee VK3AX. You will find their
interesting report, and photos of the rig, on page 24.
The transceiver covers the HF and 6 m amateur bands and is chock-a-block with
the all the latest features. The layout of the controls on the front panel are
explained in detail, and so are the endless facilities, both routine and
specialised, available through the internal software.
Then the reviewers give you their assessment of the on-air performance of this
unit, first the receiver and then the transmitter. They compare the capabilities
of this equipment with other makes and models that they have used on their many
QSOs in the past. And they provide a summary on page 27.
It looks really simple – just look at the circuit diagram on page 7. But a
high-performance low-noise amplifier for 70 cm (around 430 MHz) needs some
careful attention to detail, both in the design and in the layout and
construction.
Filip Zalio VK3FLP does pay close attention to all those details, and explains
what to watch out for and why. The article shows just how successful he was,
with an excellent photo of the CRO display to prove both the noise figure
(0.34 dB) and the gain characteristics of the LNA.
The unit is extremely compact and employs mostly surface mount devices (SMDs).
The layout and circuit board art-work are included in the article, plus a
photo of the finished LNA. You can get the art-work by e-mail on request.
Filip passes on his construction tips and precautions, and considers that SMDs
are “easier to work with than thru-holesö.
China is in the news these days, for any number of reasons. Turn to page 14 for
an absorbing article by Edwin Lowe VK2VEL about amateur radio in China and the
many, many Australians (radio amateurs and others) who visit that country
nowadays.
Edwin tells us how a QSO he had last year on 20 m led to his visits to China.
Not only that, but Edwin is a lecturer at Macquarie University in Chinese
history and contemporary China, so his interests are not only those of the
in-depth academic but also those of the radio amateur enthusiast. This is a
most interesting and enlightening article.
There is a description of the amateur radio licensing system in China and
guidance on how to obtain a visitor’s operating licence. Getting such a licence
is relatively simple but you need to be hosted by a radio club.
And Edwin takes the reader on a tour of the streets in a Chinese city with
commentary on the economic, social and historic factors that underlie modern
China. Fascinating, with photos to add to the interest!!
Keen on VHF and UHF? turn to page 52 for this regular segment on your specialty.
David Smith VK3HZ reports on recent DX contacts on 2 m, including a
Launceston-Adelaide QSO. And the arcane art of Earth-Moon-Earth (EME)
communication sounds easy, with a first-hand report on 13 cm (that’s around
2,300 MHz) contest activity by enthusiast Trevor Benton VK4AFL.
Rex Moncur VK7MO, who is also deep into EME, describes what it takes to set a
new digital record here on planet earth. Using 43 cm and 65 cm dishes at 10GHz,
and digitally synchronised from GPS signals, he and David VK3HZ communicated
between Mt Cowley near Lorne and Mt Baw Baw in Gippsland – over an amazing
224.7 km path. See the photos. As well, he relates some of the successes and
disappointments during recent 10 GHz tropo-scatter experiments between VK3 and
VK7.
Put this in your diary, especially if you are into VHF and UHF. The annual
GippsTech conference is on again, Saturday and Sunday 5-6 July. It is held at
the Monash University, Churchill campus, near Morwell in Gippsland. WIA member
or not, all you need is a passion for V/UHF. More details on page 40 of Amateur
Radio magazine, plus an update by Chris Morley VK3CJK on page 33.

Mt Stuart Tarmac Rally Sprint happening now
As the news goes to air today, some North Queensland Radio Amateurs are
operating a time control radio net amongst the sound of squealing and smoking
tyres, revving engines and grunting yet grinning drivers as part of the
Townsville City Auto Sports Club Tarmac Rally Sprint on the entire length of
the Mount Stuart Road.
The operators attended yesterday afternoon's compulsory briefing session and
today are providing time control logistic communications support along with
technical backup for the safety communications network.
WICEN Tasmania (South) will be at The Lea Scout Camp off the Southern
Outlet between Hobart and Kingston on Saturday and Sunday June 14 and 15.

Activities will then include N.V.I.S. trials using the WICEN 5MHz frequencies
on CODAN radios
On Sunday an introduction to Radio Mobile - radio system performance prediction
software, APRS - what it takes to get started and a show and tell on members'
recent projects.

that's asked.

up the hill.
