Last Tuesday Peter VK4HOY led a band of special mountaineers to the
top of Mt. Beerburrum in the Glass House Mountains just north of
Brisbane to set up their school radio station to celebrate Queensland
Education Week.
The students are from Caboolture State High School Special School and
from grades 10 to 12. They carried up their equipment including
batteries and beam antenna in backpacks and on wheel chairs.
The school has its own callsign, VK4HBU, and Peter, their teacher,
has been able to use amateur radio to assist the students make many
contacts with other school students.
Many of the students have difficultly with reading the facial
expressions in face to face situations and radio assists them to
develop confidence with all forms of verbal communication.
Many thanks to John, VK4BZ who took time out from his final
university assignment to speak to about a dozen of the students and
also to Ken, VK4FKEN who also made the experience for the students so
rewarding.
John VK4BZ also led club members to set up and participate in last
weekend’s Trans Tasman CW contest. While John was the main operator
he was assisted by Ken,VK4FKEN, Harry, VK4DFG, Ray, VK4CES and Peter
VK4TAA. After some 43 contacts, Peter was heard to say, “ You know
those dots and dashes are really starting to make senseö.
Plans are now afoot to enter to 160 metre Trans Tasman CW contest
contest later in July.
A reminder that the club’s Annual General Meeting is to be held on
Monday 16 th June 2008 at the club rooms.
