VK4AIV Wally Douglas May 21 2008 advised by vk4fuq/kel
Well the news came to the QNEWS Newsroom very early Wednesday morning from
Felix VK4FUQ in Ingham, the news that VK4AIV Wally Douglas became Silent Key
less than 3 hours earlier.
In an environment where often no one takes the care or has the thought to pass
on news of Silent Keys until sometimes MONTHS later, this news was also passed
to us by Past President of the old WIAQ Geoff Sanders then by VK4ZZ
Gavin Reibelt.
Yes VK4AIV was so obviously a well liked and respected "Character" as it turns
out
Let me read first Geoff's Tribute.
"David Wilson VK4UN rang me this morning to advise that our mate Wally,
affectionately known as the "Alcohol Induced Villain" lost his long battle
with cancer at around 6am this morning, Wednesday 21st May 2008.
I first met Wally at the Townsville convention many years ago when the then
WIAQ Council made a point of attending.
Since then, each time I have passed through the Mackay area, Wally has
always been around to give some cheek as I called on the local 2m repeater.
I and many others will sadly miss this bloke, one of FNQ's real Amateur
Radio characters.
73 old mate,
Geoff VK4KEL".
And this from VK4ZZ Gavin
"As those who attended many of the Central Queensland gatherings such as
Clairview and Emerald would have known Wal for his unique yet entertaining way
of running the monster auctions that helped finance projects for the
Rockhampton, Mackay and Central Highlands clubs.
Wal was a self confessed bushie - feeling best at home away from suburbia
and was an extremely capable communications co-ordinator for many of the
big horse endurance rides that happen about Central Queensland.
An adept experimenter, a regular on the Central - North - Far North Queensland
VHF Aircraft Enhancement Net and about to get into new territory on 1.2Gigs,
Wal was also a master machinist - able to do intricate and precise jobs in any
type of metal.
We have lost one of the most capable members of our hobby and a great friend".
Wal Douglas VK4AIV, former President and WICEN Co-ordinator for the Mackay and
District Amateur Radio Association went Silent Key at 6am Wednesday 21st May
after a long battle with cancer.
Wal's funeral will be held on Tuesday 27th at 10:00 AM at the Crematorium on
Harbour Road Mackay.
And from CARC
The present and past members of the Cairns Amateur Radio Club
would like to pay their sincere respects for the loss of Wally VK4AIV.

Hello this is Peter VK4OD putting out a request for assistance from the
Amateurs in and around Brisbane.
Once again we have been asked to supply communications for the “ Big Country
Horse Endurance Ride ö, which is held in the bush land in and around Spring
Mountain area, just Southwest of Brisbane. This year it is to be run on the
Weekend of 21st and 22nd June.
We are in need of about 10 Operators either Amateurs to work mainly on
146.MHz, or 70cm and or CB operators using some of the simplex UHF CB
frequencies.
Unfortunately I will be in Greenslopes Private Hospital undergoing some
Major Surgery, so Andrew VK4BO will be the contact point and liaison between
the Club and the Endurance organizers.
As usual most checkpoints only need to be manned for 2 to 3 hours then you can
be moved to another post or elect to go home, PLEASE advise Andrew of your
hours of availability.
First checkpoint time needs to be onsite about 05:30 and should be clear about
09:00 +-.
Please contact Andrew by Email at vk4bo@vk4bo.net
With your availability and what equipment you can bring to operate with.

Some 50 club members and visitors attend the club to listen intently to last
Monday’s club tech talk. Andy provided detailed information on the
construction of multiband antennas using open wire feedlines.
He provided detailed mathematical analysis as well as practical advice on
their construction and operation.
Peter VK4TGV showed how to fit a large multiband wire antenna in a 400 square
metre housing block and showed the tricks used to fit in the wire to work
80 and 160 metres.
Both speakers clearly stated the obvious fact that all multiband antennas are a
compromise and what is needed, is a simple antenna that is a good compromise
that suits your planned band usage. Both also stated that there is not a
“golden bulletö for multiband antenna.
Another myth that was busted was that a good transmitting antenna is also a
good receiving antenna. Andy stressed that a good receiving antenna should be
as horizontal as possible.
Peter provided a novel solution to those antenna masts and sky poles around and
on the house. That is to encourage the XYL to obtain her licence and then the
criticism seems to disappear quite quickly.
The raffle for the essentials for a doublet style antenna including
70 metres of wire for the antenna, 20 metres of 450 ohm open line feeder and
a current balun to the value of $150.00 was won by Roger, VK4FUDN.
