 Situation report on China earthquake

Ad 7.030 to the 7.050, 7.060 and 14.270 emergency channels to stear clear of.

The involvement in the Sichuan earthquake disaster of ham radio continues
with the latest report that the Red Cross has enlisted the emergency
 communication skills of radio amateurs.

The IARU radio society, the Chinese Radio Sports Association reports that
long distance telephone services were at times congested in the Chengdu area,
presumably due to a heavy demand and damage, and it was asked to set up HF
 station in Chengdu.

Under the callsign BT8RC it established a good channel for the Chinese Red
Cross Foundation from Beijing to Chengdu. This is providing communications
to enable the relief agency to more effectively carry out its work.

Other cities in the earthquake area had setup or restored VHF and UHF repeaters
and amateur radio communication teams to assist with communication.

The Sichuan Radio Sports Association station BY8AA has been helping many
others with communication and during one week had an operational log of 300
 pages.

The CRSA sends it thanks to the amateur radio community for keeping three
 frequencies - 7050, 7060 and 14270 kilohertz clear ? these are continuing
to be used for emergency communications.

BUT TAKE NOTE often the 7.050 MHz frequency, because of a strong QRM, emergency
communications temporarily have had to QSY to 7.030 MHz.

The CRSA website reports that on May 18 members of the Hong Kong Amateur Radio
Communications Association - VR2HAM - donated a second batch of food, medicine,
 communications equipment and other materials.

The nation of China is in mourning for the estimated 50,000 people killed
in the earthquake on the 12th of May which measured eight on the Richter
 scale.

It is China's most deadliest earthquake in 32 years. More than 245,000 were
 injured and 2 million homeless.

 NATIONAL NEWS

 WESTLAKES VK2

The club has again been targeted by malicious activity with the majority of
Coax feed lines to their various Antenna's being stolen.

What was not removed was damaged beyond use.

This apparently happened Thursday night or Friday Morning last week.

A report has been made to Toronto Police in New South Wales for further
 investigation.

This follows on from the Copper water pipes being stolen last month.

 PHONE HOME

Telephone numbers with new geographic prefixes are being issued to customers
in a number of regions throughout Australia.

Numbers beginning with the new prefixes are being issued as the supply of
numbers in these areas has run out.

‘Across Australia, the need for new telephone numbers is growing due to
increased demand for additional phone lines and competition between new
telecommunications service providers,’ said Maureen Cahill, Acting General
Manager of the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Inputs to
 Industry Division.

The new numbers will only be issued to residents and business requesting new
telephone services. No existing numbers are affected by the new numbers.
Residents and businesses will not have to change their existing telephone
numbers and the new prefixes do not change the cost of calls.

Australians at risk of losing their memories!

A new report by Galaxy Research titled The gizmo Household Technology Study has
revealed that Australians are not backing up personal information contained on
their computers, putting themselves at risk of losing their digital photographs,
videos, music, study notes as well as other data such as banking and tax
 records.

The report identifies that while Australians continue to purchase the latest
technologies for their homes, many are not utilising all the features in the
 products they’ve bought.

Only 15% of the survey respondents said they backed up their files at least
weekly. And, while 34% admitted to backing up “occasionallyö, an alarming
44% admitted to not backing up “nearly as often as they shouldö or
“rarely or neverö backing up their files.

However, 95% keep files on their home PCs or laptops that they don’t want to
 lose.

The respondents identified the most common information they didn’t want to
 lose as follows:

 Digital photos (83%);

 Personal files such as a resume (67%);

 Personal information (54%);

 Music (48%);

For backing up personal information, gizmo recommends using an External Hard
Disk drive, or a Network Attached Storage unit, which are readily available
 and very affordable.

Make sure you create both incremental and complete (archival) backups of your
work and personal information on a regular basis. Incremental backups are a
fantastic way to quickly backup your files as they only copy the files that
have changed since the last backups. Most external hard disks offer software
 to automate incremental backups.

Burmese cyclone Nargis victims re-connected via telecommunication

The International Telecommunication Union has deployed 100 satellite terminals
to help restore vital communication links in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis
that hit Myanmar on 2 May with devastating effect in Yangon and the low-lying
Irrawaddy delta region. Thousands were killed, and thousands more are injured
and missing. High winds cut electricity, destroyed roads and communications
links, hampering the coordination and delivery of assistance.

With the restoration of communication links, designated government officials
and other humanitarian agencies are able to more efficiently coordinate relief
operations. The mobile terminals are easily transported by road and air to be
used both by humanitarian workers and the victims of this disaster.

RADIO LAW: COMPANY WANTS TO TRANSMIT DRM IN ALASKA

Digital Aurora Radio Technologies has applied to the FCC to use Short
Wave Digital Radio Mondiale in Alaska. A report on the 26 MHz D-R-M
site at www.26mhz.us say that the company has applied to the FCC for
authorization to experiment with state-wide DRM in the 5, 7 and 9 MHz
shortwave bands. While no specific frequencies are mentioned the
company says that its ultimate goal of this project is to provide a
terrestrial digital radio service to the citizens of Alaska.

A unique element of the proposed station is its use of government
surplus over-the-horizon radar transmitters for the project. Tests by
the system manufacturer, Continental Electronics, demonstrated the
capability of the transmitter to broadcast Digital Radio Mondiale with
excellent performance characteristics and within the spectral mask
recommended by the ITU for this mode

The FCC has assigned the callsign WE2XRH to this station, but its
license was pending at the time of this writing. Digital Aurora Radio
Technologies is home based in Delta Junction Alaska, approximately 130
miles southeast of Fairbanks. Digital Radio Mondiale or DRM is an
open, non-proprietary digital standard for sound and data
 broadcasting, world-wide.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD: FORMER K7ANQ - AGE 99 - SK

99 year old former Alaska resident Lily Osterback Alford, the former
K7ANQ, died April 24th at home in Lake Stevens, Washington.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, it was in the 1930's that
newspapers labelled Lily as the 'Queen of the North.' because she had
the ability to communicate with people all over the world on the
 family's homemade transmitter and receiver.

According to family members Lily was half Aleut. Her greatest moment
of fame came in the early 1930s as the only 'Indian Girl' in the
United States to hold a ham radio license at that time.

A memorial celebration of the life of Lily Osterback Alford was held
at the Bitterlake Community Centre in Seattle, Washington.

projects is now out in a new volume, No.4.

As usual the information is presented in an informative and friendly manner
with clear circuits and mechanical details, along with sources for the parts.

Even though the projects appear in the pages of AR magazine it is great to
have them all in one book, so that you can browse for ideas and compare the
projects. At around $20 plus postage and packing the latest volume is well
worth the price. Available by post from the WIA "Book Shop" who maybe still

Cute-1.7 - FM packets all over the world

Hiroki Ashida provides an update on the Cute-1.7 Amateur Radio CubeSat launched
at the end of April, this to Southgate News Thursday

I'm at Tokyo Institute of Technology (JQ1YCZ) and I'd like to inform you about
our satellite's operation which starts very soon.

We're preparing for a long-run (continuous 12 hour) of the APD (avalanche
photo-diode) carried on Cute1.7 + APD II, as a radiation monitor of low-energy
(E> 10 keV) particles trapped in the LEO (low Earth orbit).

While the APD is operating, the status packet of APD is transmitted every
16 seconds (TBD). The observation will start at 10:40, May 21 (UTC) and the
APD will be turned off on 22:40, May 21(UTC). So the APD packet can be received
 everywhere in the world!

This is the first time that Cute-1.7 + APD II transmits its FM packet around
 the globe.

Though the observation data will be stored in FRAMs, we'd like to know a
real-time status of the APD during the observation. Your kind reports will be
 highly appreciated.

FM packets are transmitted on 437.475 MHz and packet formats are available in
 the following web-page.

access the other side of the world when they stopped by Enoch Troop 350’s booth.

The booth demonstrated ham radio and taught visitors about Morse code and the
history of ham radio. It also had a live link to David Thomasson in Queensland,
Tazmania, Australia.. using the Internet Radio Linking Project.

 Yes Queensland Tazmania!

However it was good to see the magic of our hobby being reported far and wide!
