Australia's Queensland hit by bad weather
Date : 20 / 02 / 2015
Author : Jim Linton - VK3PC
Major damage has already been caused by Tropical Cyclone Marcia that came
ashore ripping roofs off, downing trees, damaging powerlines and other
infrastructure.
It was too early to know the full damage extent of the Category 5 cyclone
with 250 kilometre per hour winds that hit Yeppoon, and lost intensity
as it slowly moved south.
The Central Queensland Amateur Radio Association is on 7098 KHz and the
2m repeater.
Other WICEN groups are ready to help the responding emergency services.
The few left on Queensland tourist coastal islands are in cyclone shelters.
Good news is that there has been no loss of life.
During previous major Queensland cyclones extensive agricultural crops were lost.
A separate weather system had dumped rain over south-east Queensland
including the capital of Brisbane, causing some localised flooding.
That situation could potentially worsen as Marcia heads further south.
Meantime Cyclone Lam engulfed the north-east of the Northern Territory.
Early evacuation of lightly populated islands and sheltering from that
storm had been effective.
