DID YOU TELL ANYONE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO THIS WEEK?

This is QNEWS from VK4WIA for week commencing May 11 2008

2M IRLP node 44666; 70CM IRLP node 6404.
Last Saturday, Peter VK4TGV. Charlie VK4YZ, Roger VK4UPS and Ray VK4CES spent
most of the day at the Redcliffe repeater site replacing the existing repeater
antenna with a newer one with greater gain and better range. The source of the
scratchy noise on the 2m and 70 cm signals was also found and was no more that
corrosion in the earth lead.
With that cleaned and lots of alminox the problem should be fixed for some
time to come. The group also took time out to clean the site of lots of weeds
and grass that has grown since the early good rains this year.
At last Monday night's meeting Andy VK4KY, provided a brief preview of his
forth-coming tech talk on Feed Line losses & the issues with coax and open line
feeder. Many club members have been busy building doublet style antennas feed
with 450 ohm feeders with great results using ideas and computer modelling
thanks to Andy.
Cory VK4FDRC with his doublet style antenna some 60 feet in the air worked his
first UK station and recorded over 60 points on the Harry Angel Sprint all with
a genuine 10 watts. And one of our honorary club members, Eddie G7GCS finally
was able to work club members, his very first VK4 contact, on 40 metres and
did so on ANZAC Day and again on the 26 th April for a very special QSO.
An early reminder that the next technical talk is by Andy VK4KY and Peter
VK4TGV and is all about antennas and is on Monday 19 May and all amateurs in
the area are invited.
This will be a night not to be missed as some of the myths will be settled
once & for all.

Comms Support Operators hear the pounding of hooves today
As the news goes to air today, some North Queensland
Radio Amateurs are in the field playing with radios and being
really useful for competitors in the Onslow Paints Bush to Beach
Townsville Endurance Ride. Operators gathered at Ride Base -
North Queensland Equestrian Centre from 2pm Saturday
afternoon to figure out position of checkpoints on the new
ride course and fine tuned the operational plan before
participating in a free BBQ put on by the Endurance Riders Club.
The Endurance Ride has been underway since 5am this morning
with the Radio Amateurs operating from locations as diverse as
beachside checkpoints on the edge of the Coral Sea to high
vantage points in the Paluma Range.
Main communication is happening on 147.150MHz simplex to
ensure there is no interference to nearby EME and DX station VK4ABW.
The Endurance Ride is expected to finish around 2pm.
However the fun doesn't stop there !
theTARCinc WICEN Co-ordinator Ray VK4NET is still after
operators to help out with a variety of other events that will need
coverage including :
The Mount Stuart Tarmac Rally Sprint on 7th and 8th June,
TERAHA Endurance Flagstaff Ride Bluewater/Toolakea 21-22 June,
Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim on Saturday 12th July,
Contact Ray VK4NET now on either 0419 637637 or 47234351 and say you can help !
ARDF to return to Townsville in September
Amateur Radio Direction Finding, Foxhunting and Observation Exercises
are about to make an imminent welcome regular return to Townsville.
Tony VK4TJS has taken on the task of keeping theTARCinc internationally
compatible ARDF VHF and HF beacons in operational order and is in the
initial stages of planning a few foxhunts with a prize and a sausage sizzle
as the months get cooler in the steamy north.
The Return of the Foxhunt to Townsville, Episode 1, has been scheduled to take
place during Saturday afternoon September 6th with activities
that the whole family can participate in.
