VK4MF Bob Britton became Silent Key April 24
Bob held the callsign VK4MF for many years and would not have joined the hobby
except for a chance meeting with some hams when trying to catch up with a
friend.
Sources told him that his friend was up at the local amateur radio club meeting
and so Bob went up to the meeting place and got roped into the first ever
Radio Theory lesson put on by the TARC during the mid 1950s.
His interest was piqued by the first session so Bob persevered and eventually
obtained his callsign.
Bob was meticulous when it came to home brewing with his finished apparatus
always looking and performing better than any similar commercial equipment.
Bob was also the main instigator in the procurement and installation of one of
the longest standing Amateur Radio towers in the Townsville area, that being
the windmill tower at the VK4PS QTH at Belgian Gardens.
When poor health started to interfere with his enjoyment of his hobbies Bob let
his callsign go but kept a short-wave receiver handy to get the occasional
radio fix.
Bob's other main hobby was Sports Shooting, showing such dedication to the safe
practice of the hobby and exceptional instruction in gunnery that he was for
many years a life member of the Townsville Gun Club.
Bob's funeral service was held at the Woongarra Crematorium Chapel on Wednesday
30th April.
We've lost one of our hobby's most enthusiastic, helpful and meticulous members
Vale Bob Britton, ex VK4MF, SK

TOWNSVILLE
- Comms Support Operators smell burning rubber today
As the news goes to air today, some North Queensland
Radio Amateurs are operating a time control radio net
amongst the sound of squealing and smoking tyres,
revving engines and grunting yet grinning drivers as part
of the Townsville City Auto Sports Club King of the Hill
Hillclimb Round 2 on the Mount Stuart Road.
The operators have been on site since 7-30am helping
out with setup, ensuring that radio comms is reliable,
taking in information from the supplementary regs for
the event and looking forward to those nice steak sandwiches
and hamburgers the organisers are supplying at lunchtime for free.
The event ends around 4pm today with the operators
having sent and received many time control reports.
Next weekend Communications Support Operators
will be participating in an event that has a much
calmer pace. The Onslow Paints Bush to Beach
Townsville Endurance Ride will be happening from
2pm Saturday May 10th to 3pm Sunday May 11th
in the Bluewater to Toolakea region to the northwest
of Townsville.
theTARCinc WICEN Co-ordinator Ray VK4NET is still after
operators to help out this and other events and he hopes that
you can put up a hand and help out too.
There's also a variety of other events on the horizon needing coverage including
The Mount Stuart Tarmac Rally Sprint on 7th and 8th June
Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim on Saturday 12th July
Contact Ray VK4NET now on 0419 637637 and say you can help !
THE FINAL FINAL
Brisbane VHF groups 2 meter repeater call back organiser Nye VK4HZZ
has suggested the local clubs may offer to run a roster of the callbacks
on a monthly basis, maybe during the callbacks you could offer help?
Over to you.....
and out from me
