WIA National News - For Week Commencing Sunday 20 April 2008

IMD UPDATE - CHANGES.

Please copy this time change for the participation of K6KPH in International
Marconi Day 2008:
K6KPH will begin operations at about 1900gmt Saturday 26 April.
They will continue until 0000gmt.
Operating frequencies will include 3550, 7050, 14050 and 21050kc, each to be
used as time of day and propagation indicate.
VY 73, Richard Dillman, W6AWO
Chief Operator, Coast Station KSM

Late news in is that the Hornsby and Districts Amateur Radio Club, will be
activating VK2IMD for International Marconi Day. Activity will start at
10:00 AM Sydney time on Saturday, 26th April, and continue until 10:00 AM on
Sunday, this being the UTC day.

This will be the only IMD station in the Asia-Pacific region, the link being
that Ernest Fisk received the first direct wireless message from the UK to
Australia, at Wahroonga in northern Sydney, a signal transmitted from Marconi
in Wales. Look out for VK2IMD on the various HF bands, mostly using
Single Side Band, but with some CW, depending on the operator..

IMD Homepage: www.gb4imd.org.uk/

Participating stations: www.gb4imd.org.uk/awardstns.htm

It was no laughing matter when signals popped up on 70cm band during the recent
Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Staff of a security company were equipped with imported Chinese made hand-helds
radios.

They believed were CB radios and okay to use for communications on the streets
of Central Melbourne.

The ACMA acted quickly on reports of the intruders and was taking appropriate
action to ensure compliance with the Radiocommunications Act.

The fear among the amateur radio community is that this incident could be just
the start of many more commercial uses of similar radios.

That fear comes amid reports of another intrusion on the 70cm for valet parking
at a major Melbourne entertainment complex.

It’s important that radio amateurs let the ACMA get on with its job of
investigation and enforcement.

Attempts to engage in on air discussion with the intruders may be a breach of
our amateur licence conditions, but can also frustrate ACMA investigations if
the offender goes QSY.

I’m Jim Linton VK3PC and you’re listening to VK1WIA.

AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS

FUND FOR SPECIAL PROJECTS - FOUNDED BY 9V1UV

The Directors of IARU Region 3 have gratefully accepted the gift of US$5,000
offered by Selva 9V1UV to establish a special fund to be called the "Fund for
Special Projects - Founded by 9V1UV". The fund is to enable the Directors to
undertake tasks or projects that can help Region 3 better achieve its missions
and goals. Selva has expressed the hope that others may also contribute to the
fund.

VU2ATN had been experiencing severe problems in HF operation owing to
continuous interference from passenger lifts and various power appliances in
his QTH which is a part of a large apartment block.

In fact Atanu had even considered giving up ham radio because he had not been
able to copy signals with signal strength less than +9.

What to do?

Well He found an article "AN INTERFERENCE CANCELLING SYSTEM FOR YOUR RECEIVER
OR TRANSCEIVER" by Lloyd Butler VK5BR on the internet and decided to try
the solution.

The result?

Very encouraging and the cancelling system, using a simple circuit and a noise
antenna, has been working pretty well.

Atuna, VU2ATN can reiterate that VK5BR's solution is really very good and can
certainly be copied by city-dwellers like him and still pursue ham radio.

ACMA NEWS

VK7 LICENCE CHECK POINT

Taking a look at the ACMA licence database there are currently 617
amateur radio licences issued.

Removing the 23 repeaters and beacon licences we end up with a total
of 594 amateur radio licences.

70% of these are advanced licensees.

15% are standard licensees and

14% are foundation licensees.

Not bad for a state of 500,000 population.

That makes one radio amateur per 840 people in the population.

the site on Mt Kiangarow is looking down the barrel of a major upgrade, the
owners of the site were looking at replacing the existing antenna tower for an
80ft self supporting one, this has been withdrawn, but one of the rural fire

are looking at upgrading not only the antenna tower, but the equipment hut

Last Monday DARC had a very good club meet starting with a BBQ. this was
followed by the general meeting after which Gary VK8BN gave an interesting
talk on transmission lines. In this talk Gary explained some little remembered
facts about lines, particularly NOT to attach so much importance to SWR.

Some 18 club members attended the evening in Darwin.

NEWS FROM SOUTHGATE

INAUGURAL SPEECH OF NEW PRESIDENT RASSIE ERASMUS, ZS1YT

Delivering his inaugural address at the South African Radio League convention
in Bloemfontein, the newly elected President, Rassie Erasmus, said that
Amateur Radio is a foundation for technical knowledge.

He said that it is no secret that many professionals in the field of radio, TV,
communications and electronics have started their technical education as young
radio amateurs and it should still be used as a unique attraction for future
young radio amateurs.

For his Presidential year he has chosen three themes that follow from the SARL
slogan "Amateur Radio Communication Technology in action".

The three themes for this year have a common threat - growth

Growth in application of new technologies, building on the Radio Technology in
Action Symposia which the SARL presents annually in the main centres and on the
air technical discussions and tuition.

Growth of the SARL membership

Growth of the radio amateur community in South Africa by bringing in more young
people but also focusing on the value that amateur radio can bring to
senior citizens as a quality past time.

FROM THE SOUTHGATE AMATEUR RADIO CLUB,
I'M Richard Brunton - g4tut - You're tuned to VK1WIA

NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE

HAM RADIO ON THE NET: IRC MORSE COMES TO THE WWW

It was bound to happen and now it has, Morse code over Internet Relay
Chat or IRC.

According to its host website, CWirc is a plug-in for the X-Chat IRC
client. It is designed to transmit raw Morse code over the internet
using I-R-C servers as reflectors. The transmitted Morse code can be
received in near real-time by other X-Chat clients who are equipped
with the CWirc plug-in.

CWirc tries to emulate a standard amateur radio rig. It has the
ability to send and receive Morse over virtual channels, and it can
listen to multiple senders transmitting on the same channel. Morse
code is keyed locally using a straight or iambic key connected to a
computers serial port, or using the mouse buttons, Sound is played
through the soundcard or through an external sounder.

Note that CWirc doesn't do any Morse decoding. It simply transmits
and receives C-W timing events. The program and your computer does
the rest to give you a Morse code experience without the radio, the
antenna or any T-V-I.

More about CWirc is on-line at users.skynet.be/ppc/cwirc/ The website
also has historic information on the Morse code and the telegraph.

CELEBRATING 1600 WEEKS OF THE AMATEUR RADIO NEWSLINE

And finally this week & Hmmm... How many times have you heard those
words on these newscasts? The words "&and finally this week."

Well, if you have been with us since the beginning in 1977, this week
marks the 1600th time one of our news anchors has introduced the last
story of the week with those words going right back to the days we
were the Westlink Radio Network.

It Jim Hendershot, WA6VQP, who originally conceived, produced and
voiced the Westlink newscasts. Actually, Westlink was originally
intended for one newscast to talk about the pros and cons of the
hottest topic of the day. That topic was repeater deregulation:

--

Audio only: Please download and play the mp3 version of the newscast
available at www.arnewsline.org

--

That's how it started. And after 70 some off newscasts, Jim
Hendershot moved away from Los Angeles, turning the reins of Westlink
Radio over to Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF. He in turn solicited the
assistance of two friends from NBC News. Broadcast Engineer Bill
Orenstein, KH6QX, and the late Alan Kaul, W6RCL:

WEIRD N WONDERFUL

Arthur, G2FTK is presented with the QSL card

QSL card spotted on Ebay makes a welcome return home
A QSL card sent 55 years ago by Arthur Noakes, G2FTK, now president of the
Coventry Amateur Radio Society, was spotted on Ebay by Andy G6ULX, and fellow
Society member, Brian G8GMU, successfully bid for the card.

It was later presented on President's Night to Arthur by club Chairman Bob
G4GEE. The card confirmed a CW contact made by G2FTK on the 22nd February,
1953 with W2BJQ.

The QSL card for the 1953 contact with W2BJQ

Arthur was absolutely delighted with his quite unusual gift.

G2FTK was one of the founder members of the Coventry Amateur Radio Society,
which was formed in 1932.

The rear of the card is of interest to vintage vehicle collectors, as it was
printed by the Standard Motor Company.

The image? the "new" 1953 Standard Vanguard has as one of its passengers,
the managing director Sir John Black, clearly chauffeur driven. The car itself,
a prototype, was gold in colour and photographed in Stoneleigh Village

Digital Radio Announces New Initiatives

REAL TIME TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS OVER YOUR RADIO

Commercial Radio Australia has entered into an agreement with Sentinel
Content, (whose investors include the NRMA and RACQ), for the development of
real time traffic solutions via digital radio.

Rather than receiving an audio-only bulletin about a problem, the system
will deliver timely traffic bulletins and answers to the best alternate
routes to the destination. The service will be available on free-to-air
digital radio and using DAB+ will also be able to provide additional updates
for in-car and portable navigation systems.

Extra data such as parking information, fuel pricing and transit lane
restrictions could also be integrated into the system.

Free-to-air digital radio services will begin in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane,
Adelaide, Perth and Hobart from January 2009.

More information on digital radio can be found at

Zapping Cancer Cells at 13.56 MHz

John, K3TUP, of Pennsylvania, has been working on an RF-based treatment for
cancer that is currently undergoing testing.

K3TUP was on CBS's 60 Minutes last Sunday, April 13.

John gave as many plugs to his ham radio background as he could in being the
foundations of hands-on learning that led to his research and invention

K3TUP, a very active Amateur Radio operator, aided in the creation of the
upcoming ARRL Technology and Amateur Radio public relations campaign.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP --- MILITARY

Emery McClendon, KB9IBW, has received the Hamvention award for Special
Achievement for his efforts starting Amateur Radio Military Appreciation Day
back in 2003.

He said he started ARMAD "as a way to have Amateur Radio serve as a tool for
the people of our communities to be able to express 'live' support and
appreciation for our troops, veterans, retired military and first responders."

His interest in organizing Military Special Events derives from his four years
of service in the US Air Force and two years in the Indiana Air National Guard.

Amateur Radio Military Appreciation Day has become a popular event, spreading
to other communities. Several military support groups have developed an
interest in having Amateur Radio as a part of their activities.
According to McClendon's award nomination, this has resulted in introducing
Amateur Radio "to thousands of people worldwide who otherwise would have never
known about our public service."

The Final Final
Importantly, when you send NATIONAL NEWS an item a couple of
"must do's", and these have not changed over the years, just they seem
to be forgotten or not passed on to club officers after elections etc.

1/ When recording, send in the highest quality you can, keep news items to
approx. 90 seconds. Club events ala HamFests 30 seconds is a fair length.

2/ After you file your audio always email the script to
nationalnews@wia.org.au
with words "news for such and such a date" included in title.

3/ When supplying script for someone else to read, PLEASE write as you'd
expect to hear it! as an example always write in the 3rd person!!
(Remember our readers are not you or your club so don't say things like
"we are having a working bee... say 'club members' are having a working
bee etc etc". dont't say "I worked the space shuttle, say VK*** worked
the space shuttle)

4/ Don't send us links or photo's of stories , always write out the story
in a manner in which it can be read and pasted to our text and
audio services.

5/ If you want an item run several times, write different slants on the
item, running the exact same item over and over would be dull/boring and
lets face it, if you can't think of anything extra to say, that is
probably a good sign that it will end up being a dull event!! We do not
make any promise to run even varied items pertaining to the one event
week in week out until the event is held.

6/ WIA related material, eg BPL if Australian material will only be broadcast
after clearence from the WIA unless said item is already in the public
domain.

7/ Club social events will always make way for "news". Your local hamfest is
far better run on your own state news service. Exeptions of course prevail,
such as Australia's Main Ham Gathering, Gosford, or if your local group
has something which will be of interest to the far broafder Ham Community.

8/ Silent Keys are best sent to AR Magazine and your local state or club news
rather than this WIA National News Service.

WIANews - we've reported...YOU decide.

Societies and Club News Letter Editors can EXCHANGE a feed prior to
the actual broadcast date, e-mail nationalnews@wia.org.au

Call-backs follow the RF editions, but also for text readers you may

even get a "cheerio call".

Thanks to to our dedicated band of broadcast volunteers who utilize
their time and equipment in bringing you this weekly broadcast.

The purpose of "WIANews" is to rapidly provide news of interest to
active amateurs residing in Australia and the globe.

We strongly encourage membership in the Wireless Institute of Australia

Opinions expressed in "WIANews" are those of the writers who submit
